Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew The Truth
I didn’t tell Elijah what the drawing meant.
How could I?
He was five years old.
He should have been worried about cartoons, toys, and what snack he wanted after school.
Not hidden rooms.
Not missing women.
Not secrets between adults.
I picked him up and carried him downstairs.
“Buddy, why did you draw this?””
He shook his head.
“I didn’t.””
The answer made me stop.
“What do you mean?””
He pointed at the paper.
“Someone put it there.””
“Who?””
He looked toward Vanessa.
“Mommy told me not to tell.””
My chest tightened.
I turned toward my wife.
“What did you tell him?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Daniel, I never—”
“Don’t.””
I held up my hand.
“Not another lie.””
She looked at Elijah.
Then back at me.
“I was trying to keep him calm.””
“By teaching him secrets?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted him involved.””
“But he already is.””
The next morning, I left the house with Elijah.
I told Vanessa I needed space.
The truth was, I needed answers before I lost my mind.
I took Elijah to my sister’s house and drove to the address Marcus had sent me after the phone call.
It was an old office building downtown.
Nothing about it looked important.
But when I walked inside, I noticed something strange.
The receptionist looked nervous when I said Marcus Hill’s name.
“Second floor,” she said quietly.
I found Marcus sitting alone in a small office.
He looked older than I expected.
Late forties.
Tired eyes.
A man who looked like he had carried a secret for too long.
He stood when he saw me.
“Daniel.””
“You know me.””
He nodded.
“I’ve known about you for years.””
The sentence immediately made me angry.
“You watched my life?””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
Marcus sat down.
“I worked with Vanessa before you met her.””
“Where?””
“At a private adoption agency.””
My stomach tightened.
“Rachel?””
He nodded.
“She was one of our clients.””
I stared at him.
“What happened?””
Marcus looked away.
“Vanessa became obsessed with having a family.””
I said nothing.
Because I already knew where this was going.
“She believed she deserved the life Rachel had.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
Marcus opened a drawer.
He pulled out a folder.
Not thick.
Not dramatic.
Just a simple folder.
But the moment I saw the label, my heart stopped.
It had Elijah’s name on it.
I reached for it.
Marcus stopped me.
“Before you open this, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa didn’t hide Rachel because she hated her.””
I looked at him.
“She hid her because Rachel knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
Marcus looked directly at me.
“The night Elijah was born, there was a second person in that hospital room.””
My face tightened.
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said:
“Someone from your family.””
I froze.
“My family?””
He nodded.
“And that person helped Vanessa change the records.””
I opened my mouth, but no words came.
Marcus pushed the folder toward me.
“Everything you need is inside.””
I opened it.
The first page was a document.
The second was a photograph.
And the third was a name.
A name I recognized immediately.
Because it belonged to someone I had trusted my entire life.
My own mother.
I looked up at Marcus.
“Why would my mother help Vanessa?””
Marcus’s expression became serious.
“Because Daniel…”
He paused.
“Your mother knew Rachel was Elijah’s real mother before you ever held him in your arms.””
The room started spinning.
My family.
My wife.
My son.
All connected by a secret I never knew existed.
Then Marcus added one final sentence.
“And there’s another reason she wanted you to stay away from the truth.””
I stared at him.
“What reason?””
Marcus slowly looked toward the office door.
Because someone was standing outside.
May you like
Listening.
And when the door opened, I saw Vanessa.
