Chapter 2: The Woman My Wife Hid

I spent the next few seconds staring between my wife and the stranger inside the hidden room.

Nothing made sense.

My house.

My family.

My son.

Everything I thought I knew suddenly felt like a carefully built lie.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel, please listen to me.””

I raised my hand.

“No. You listen to me.””

My voice sounded different, even to myself.

“Who is she?””

Vanessa looked at the woman.

The woman looked away.

That reaction told me more than any explanation could.

They knew each other.

I stepped deeper into the room.

The woman flinched.

“Are you hurt?”” I asked.

She hesitated before answering.

“I’ve been worse.””

My jaw tightened.

“What is your name?””

She looked directly at me.

“Rachel.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Daniel, don’t believe everything she says.””

I turned toward my wife.

“Why was there a secret room behind our wall?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why was Rachel inside it?””

Still nothing.

Elijah suddenly grabbed my hand.

“Daddy, why is Mommy scared?””

That question broke something inside me.

I looked at my son.

He was just a child.

He didn’t understand secrets, lies, or betrayal.

He only knew that the two adults he trusted were acting like strangers.

I knelt beside him.

“Buddy, go to your room for a minute, okay?””

“But Daddy—”

“Please.””

He looked at me, confused, then slowly walked away.

The moment he disappeared down the hallway, I faced Vanessa again.

“Start talking.””

She crossed her arms, trying to stay calm.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

I pointed toward the hidden room.

“There is a woman hidden inside our house, Vanessa.””

Her expression tightened.

“She isn’t who you think she is.””

Rachel gave a weak laugh from behind me.

“Funny. That’s exactly what she told me when she took everything from me.””

Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward her.

“Stop.””

The word came out too quickly.

Too angrily.

And I noticed.

“You’re afraid of her,” I said.

Vanessa looked back at me.

“I’m afraid of what happens when you hear the truth.””

The room became silent.

I walked toward Rachel slowly.

“How long have you been here?””

She looked down.

“Almost three years.””

My stomach dropped.

Three years.

The same amount of time we had lived in that house.

The same amount of time Vanessa had told me she spent most afternoons volunteering.

I remembered all those days she came home late.

All those unanswered questions.

I had trusted her.

“Why didn’t you escape?””

Rachel looked toward the doorway.

“Because every time I tried, she reminded me what would happen if I reached you.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked at Elijah’s bedroom door.

Then back at me.

“It means your wife made sure I could never tell you that your son…”

She stopped.

My heart started racing.

“What about my son?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

Before she could finish, Vanessa stepped between us.

“That’s enough.””

I stared at her.

“What were you about to hide from me?””

Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“Daniel, there are things about Elijah you don’t know.””

The sentence hit harder than anything else.

Because for years, I had believed Elijah was the one thing in my life that was completely honest.

I looked toward the hallway.

My son was standing there.

He had heard everything.

His small face was pale.

“Daddy…”

I immediately walked toward him.

But before I reached him, Rachel whispered from behind me.

“Daniel, ask Vanessa why she was so desperate to keep me away from you the day Elijah was born.””

I stopped.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Because I knew that look.

It was the look of someone who had been caught protecting a secret.

And then my phone started ringing.

I looked down at the screen.

It was a number I didn’t recognize.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke quietly on the other end.

“Daniel, if you found the room, then she already knows you’re close to the truth.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The man paused.

May you like

Then he said a name I had never heard before.

“Someone who can prove Vanessa has been lying to you since before you met her.””
