Chapter 7: The Person Behind The Lie
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Marcus looked at her.
I looked at her.
And Vanessa looked at the folder sitting open on the desk.
The color drained from her face.
“You weren’t supposed to find him,” she whispered.
I stood up slowly.
“You followed me?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I closed the folder.
“Why is my mother’s name in these documents?””
Vanessa stepped inside.
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
My voice was calm, but every word felt heavier than the last.
“You don’t get to say please anymore.””
Marcus stayed silent.
He knew this conversation belonged between us.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“I wanted to tell you.””
I almost laughed.
“How many years were you going to wait?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was afraid.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed at the folder.
“Rachel was afraid. You were afraid. Marcus was afraid. My mother was afraid.””
I stepped closer.
“But nobody thought about me.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You took the choice away from me.””
She wiped her face.
“I thought I was saving Elijah.””
“You stole years from his mother.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The admission was quiet.
But it hurt more than another lie.
Marcus finally spoke.
“Daniel, you need to hear the entire story.””
I looked at him.
“What else don’t I know?””
Marcus opened another document.
“This happened the night Elijah was born.””
He pointed to the paper.
“Rachel gave birth early. She was scared. She trusted Vanessa because they were friends.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She trusted you.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I loved her.””
I stared at her.
“People don’t lock away people they love.””
Her face tightened.
“I didn’t start with that.””
The sentence caught my attention.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“At first, I only wanted time.””
“Time for what?””
“To convince Rachel that Elijah would have a better life with me.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“And when she refused?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“She threatened to expose everything.””
I looked at him.
“And then?””
Marcus sighed.
“Then things became complicated.””
I hated that phrase.
It always meant someone was hiding the worst part.
“What complications?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Your mother got involved.””
I froze again.
“Why?””
“Because she knew Vanessa was married to you. She knew losing you would destroy everything.””
I stared at him.
“My mother helped cover this up?””
Marcus nodded.
“She believed protecting your family was more important than telling you the truth.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
Protecting.
That word had become meaningless.
Everyone used it to excuse their choices.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo.
Rachel standing outside a building.
Alive.
Safe.
Underneath the picture was a short message.
*Daniel, don’t trust Marcus. He’s leaving something out.*
My eyes moved to Marcus.
He noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I showed him the phone.
For the first time, Marcus looked afraid.
“She contacted you?””
I nodded.
“Why would she tell me not to trust you?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Vanessa looked between us.
“You see?””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“She’s been manipulating everyone from the beginning.””
I stared at Vanessa.
The worst part was that I didn’t know who to believe anymore.
My entire life had become a room full of locked doors.
And every person around me had a key.
I grabbed the folder.
“I’m going to find Rachel.””
Marcus stood.
“Daniel, wait.””
“No.””
I looked at both of them.
“I spent years believing I knew my family.””
I walked toward the door.
“Now I need to know who I was really living with.””
Before I left, Marcus called my name.
I stopped.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
His face was serious.
“There is one thing you haven’t asked.””
“What?””
He looked at the folder in my hand.
“Why your mother kept the original birth records hidden.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Because the original records don’t just prove Rachel is Elijah’s mother.””
May you like
A pause.
“They prove someone else signed Elijah away.””
