Chapter 9: The Night Three Sisters Became One Family
"OLIVIA, STAY DOWN!""
I barely heard Detective Harris shouting.
The moment the gunshot rang out, I jumped from the vehicle.
Police officers rushed toward the clinic.
Olivia grabbed my jacket.
"Damien! Wait!""
But I couldn't wait.
Our daughters were outside, hidden in a secure location with two officers. Evelyn was inside that building with a man who had already destroyed three childhoods.
I ran toward the entrance.
The first officer reached the door ahead of me.
"Police! Drop your weapon!""
A second shot echoed from inside.
Then silence.
I pushed through the doorway.
The clinic's reception area was dark except for a flickering emergency light.
A chair lay overturned.
Dr. Graves was on the floor.
Evelyn stood beside a metal table, holding her arm.
Adrian was gone.
I rushed toward her.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"He took the photograph.""
Detective Harris entered behind me.
"Where did he go?""
Evelyn pointed toward a rear corridor.
"Through there.""
Officers immediately followed.
I knelt beside Dr. Graves.
His forehead was bleeding.
"Where's Adrian?""
He struggled to speak.
"He knows...""
"Knows what?""
Dr. Graves grabbed my sleeve.
"Richard isn't the one who ordered the third baby transferred.""
I stared at him.
"What are you talking about?""
He swallowed painfully.
"Adrian did.""
We moved Dr. Graves to an ambulance.
Evelyn sat beside him, holding his hand.
For the first time, I saw her looking at him as a father rather than a man who had betrayed her.
Olivia arrived minutes later.
She hugged Evelyn, then turned toward Dr. Graves.
"Why did Adrian order the transfer?""
Graves closed his eyes.
"Because Richard wanted one heir. Adrian wanted three.""
Nobody understood.
He continued.
"Richard believed the firstborn granddaughter should inherit the controlling shares. Adrian discovered that the trust could be challenged if there were multiple biological heirs.""
Olivia frowned.
"So he separated the girls?""
"Yes. He planned to keep all three identities under his control. One child would inherit the Bennett name.
Another would remain a Carter. The third would disappear entirely.""
I looked at Evelyn.
"Why?""
"Because he needed a child he could claim had never existed. Someone without legal parents, without a documented identity, without a claim to the trust.""
Olivia's eyes filled.
"You let him do that to our daughter?""
Graves began crying.
"I thought I was protecting Evelyn. Richard told me she would be raised safely. He paid for everything.""
"You gave away my baby!""
"I know.""
Olivia stepped back.
For a moment, I thought she might strike him.
Instead, she whispered:
"You don't get to call yourself her father.""
Evelyn looked at her.
"Mom...""
Olivia turned toward her.
"I'm sorry. I don't mean you.""
Evelyn reached for her hand.
"I know.""
Detective Harris returned with troubling news.
Adrian had escaped through an underground service passage.
But officers had recovered a briefcase from his vehicle.
Inside were passports, medical records, and three birth certificates.
One for Sophie.
One for Ruby.
And one for Evelyn.
All three carried different birth dates.
Different mothers.
Different fathers.
Different identities.
I stared at them.
"He changed their birthdays?""
Harris nodded.
"According to these records, Sophie was born in Ohio, Ruby in New York, and Evelyn in Pennsylvania.""
Olivia looked horrified.
"They weren't just separated. He gave them entirely different lives.""
Harris placed the documents on the table.
"There's another issue. These certificates were issued by three separate state authorities. If Adrian had completed the transfer, the girls could have been moved without triggering any immediate connection to the original hospital records.""
I felt sick.
Then Harris showed us a photograph recovered from Adrian's briefcase.
It showed a woman standing beside a newborn baby.
Olivia stared at it.
"That's me.""
I looked closer.
The photograph was dated March seventeenth.
But the baby in her arms wasn't Sophie, Ruby, or Evelyn.
It was a fourth infant.
Olivia shook her head.
"No. That's impossible.""
Dr. Graves, who had been listening from the ambulance stretcher, suddenly sat upright.
"Give me that photograph.""
Harris handed it to him.
Graves stared at it.
Then he whispered:
"That's not a fourth baby.""
"What is it?"" I asked.
He looked at Olivia.
"That's the child Richard told you had died.""
Olivia covered her mouth.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"The baby you were pregnant with eleven years ago?""
She nodded slowly.
Graves continued.
"Richard never told you the truth. You were pregnant again after you escaped. He had you brought to Riverside Children's Clinic because he wanted to take that baby too.""
Olivia began shaking.
"They told me she was dead.""
"She wasn't.""
I gripped the photograph.
"Where is she?""
Graves looked toward Detective Harris.
"Adrian knows.""
The next morning, we returned to the police station.
The girls were brought in separately.
Sophie ran toward me.
"Dad!""
I lifted her into my arms.
Ruby hugged Olivia.
Evelyn stood near the doorway, uncertain whether she belonged.
Sophie noticed.
"Come here!""
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she joined them.
Three girls.
Three identical faces.
Three daughters who had spent their entire lives being told they were someone else.
Olivia held all of them.
"I should have been there," she whispered.
Sophie touched her cheek.
"You are here now.""
Ruby nodded.
"And we're not going anywhere.""
For the first time in twelve years, Olivia smiled without looking over her shoulder.
But the moment didn't last.
Detective Harris entered.
"We've identified the woman who was helping Adrian.""
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed a middle-aged woman with blonde hair.
I recognized her from the school.
She was the woman who had approached Sophie.
Evelyn stared.
"That's Dr. Graves's former assistant.""
"Her name is Vanessa Cole," Harris explained.
"She worked at Riverside Children's Clinic. We believe she helped Adrian falsify the identities.""
Olivia frowned.
"Where is she now?""
Harris hesitated.
"At the moment, she's under surveillance.""
Then he placed another document on the table.
It was a bank transfer.
A payment of two million dollars had been made to Vanessa the previous evening.
The sender wasn't Richard.
It was Adrian.
And the recipient's account had been opened eleven years earlier.
Under the name:
*OLIVIA CARTER.*
I looked at my wife.
She shook her head.
"I've never had that account.""
Harris nodded.
"We know. Someone used your identity.""
Then he pointed to the transaction description.
*FINAL TRANSFER — FOURTH CHILD.*
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Fourth child?""
Harris nodded.
"Adrian has been paying someone to locate another child.""
Olivia stared at the paper.
"Another child?""
He turned it around.
A photograph was attached.
A teenage girl stood outside a school building.
She had dark hair, hazel eyes, and the same small scar above her right eyebrow.
But there was something different.
She looked older than the others.
Perhaps sixteen.
Sophie stepped closer.
"Who is that?""
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"That's not our sister.""
I turned toward her.
"Why?""
She pointed at the girl's necklace.
It was a silver crescent moon with a blue stone.
The same necklace Olivia had worn when she disappeared.
The same necklace Ruby had worn when Sophie first recognized her.
But this time, there was something engraved on the back.
A tiny letter.
*V.*
Olivia stared at it.
Then she began crying.
"That's impossible.""
I took her hand.
"What is it?""
She looked at me.
"That necklace wasn't mine.""
I frowned.
"You told me you wore it for years.""
"I did. But I didn't own the original.""
She looked at the photograph again.
"Richard gave it to me the day I married you. He said it belonged to my mother.""
Her voice trembled.
"But my mother never wore it.""
I stared at the girl.
"Then whose necklace is it?""
Olivia swallowed.
"Vanessa's.""
That afternoon, Detective Harris received a call.
Vanessa Cole had disappeared from surveillance.
Her apartment was empty.
Her car was found abandoned near the interstate.
And the last person she'd contacted was Adrian Bennett.
A message had been left on the detective's voicemail.
It was a recording of Vanessa's voice.
"Damien Carter, if you're listening to this, you need to stop looking for the girl in the photograph.""
A pause.
Then she continued.
"She's not another daughter.""
My heart began pounding.
"She's the person who knows where the real birth records are.""
The recording ended.
A second message appeared on my phone.
Unknown number.
*YOU HAVE THREE DAUGHTERS. YOU HAVE ALWAYS HAD THREE DAUGHTERS.*
Then a photograph arrived.
It showed our three girls sleeping in the same room.
Taken from inside the police-protected house.
Underneath was one final message.
*BUT YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHICH ONE OF THEM WAS MEANT TO BE YOURS.*
I looked at Olivia.
She was already staring at me.
And for the first time since our reunion, I saw something in her expression that frightened me more than Richard Bennett ever had.
Doubt.
May you like
Because somewhere in the records Adrian had stolen, there was an answer about the girls' identities.
And someone was willing to kill to keep us from finding it.
