Chapter 6: The Third Name on the Birth Record

Nobody spoke after the recording ended.

I looked at Olivia.

She looked at me.

Detective Harris replayed the audio.

"Richard, the girls aren't the only ones who were switched.""

The words sounded even worse the second time.

"What does she mean?"" I asked.

Harris shook his head.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

Olivia stood abruptly.

"Where is Martha?""

"We don't know.""

"Then find her!""

"Mrs. Carter, we need you to calm down.""

"Don't tell me to calm down!"" Olivia shouted.

"That woman is the only reason my daughters are alive!""

The detective looked surprised.

"Explain.""

Olivia took a breath.

"Twelve years ago, Martha discovered that Richard had falsified the birth records. She told me there was another name in the hospital registry. A third child.""

I stared at her.

"Another child?""

She nodded.

"I thought she was confused. She was terrified. She said the hospital had registered three babies that night, not two.""

Detective Harris frowned.

"Our records show two.""

"Exactly," Olivia whispered.

"That's why someone changed them.""

I looked toward Sophie and Ruby.

They were sitting together on the sofa.

Sophie held Ruby's hand.

"Mom?"" Ruby asked.

Olivia walked over and knelt in front of them.

"Sweetheart, I need you to stay with Dad for a little while.""

Ruby shook her head.

"You're coming too, right?""

"Of course.""

But her voice wasn't convincing.

Detective Harris took us to the police station.

The girls were placed in a private family room while Olivia and I reviewed the evidence.

An officer brought us a copy of the original hospital admission ledger.

Most of the entries were ordinary.

Names, dates, times, medical notes.

Then we reached March seventeenth.

The page contained three handwritten entries.

*2:13 A.M. — Olivia Carter — Female Infant A.*

*2:14 A.M. — Olivia Carter — Female Infant B.*

*2:16 A.M. — Unidentified Female Infant C.*

I stared at the third entry.

"Who was that baby?""

Harris leaned over the document.

"We don't know. The identity column was deliberately removed.""

Olivia pointed toward the bottom of the page.

"Look at the initials.""

Three sets of initials appeared beside the entries.

A.C.

B.C.

And R.B.

"R.B.?"" I asked.

Olivia shook her head.

"Richard Bennett.""

The detective turned another page.

"There's more.""

An attached note stated that the third infant had been transferred to a different medical facility.

The destination had been blacked out.

But beneath the black ink, someone had written a partial address.

*RIVER... CHILDREN'S CLINIC.*

I recognized the name.

"Riverside Children's Clinic.""

Harris nodded.

"It was a private medical facility owned by a company connected to Bennett Holdings. It closed eleven years ago.""

"Why?""

"Officially, financial difficulties.""

Olivia stared at the page.

"No.""

I touched her shoulder.

"What?""

She whispered:

"That's where Richard took me after I escaped.""

I turned toward her.

"When?""

"Eleven years ago. I was pregnant.""

The words hit me like a physical blow.

I couldn't speak.

Olivia continued.

"I was living under another name. I thought I was safe. Then Richard found me and took me to that clinic.

He told me I was sick. He said I needed treatment.""

"Did you lose the baby?""

She nodded.

"That's what he told me.""

My hands curled into fists.

"What happened?""

"I don't remember everything. They gave me medication. When I woke up, they said the baby hadn't survived.""

I stared at her.

"Did you see the baby?""

"No.""

The room went silent.

Detective Harris closed the ledger.

"Mrs. Carter, I need you to understand something. If that third entry is genuine, we may be looking at a much larger case than child abduction.""

Olivia looked at him.

"What are you saying?""

"Someone may have been falsifying birth identities for years.""

At 4:30 a.m., I returned to the family room.

Sophie and Ruby were asleep on opposite ends of the sofa.

I covered them with jackets.

Then I sat beside Sophie.

She stirred.

"Dad?""

"I'm here.""

"Are we going to be okay?""

I kissed her forehead.

"Yes.""

She looked toward Ruby.

"Is she really my twin?""

I smiled faintly.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"Then why do we have different last names?""

"Because some adults made terrible decisions.""

Sophie was quiet.

Then she asked:

"Does Ruby have the same birthday as me?""

I nodded.

"Exactly the same.""

She smiled sleepily.

"That's pretty cool.""

Then she turned toward Ruby and fell asleep again.

For a moment, I allowed myself to imagine a normal future.

Two girls arguing over bathroom time.

Two school bags by the door.

Two birthdays celebrated together.

A mother who could finally sit at the dinner table without looking over her shoulder.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered quietly.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice whispered:

"Damien, it's Martha.""

I stood immediately.

"Where are you?""

"Don't tell the police.""

"Where are you?""

"I can't stay here long.""

"Tell me what happened to the third baby.""

She started crying.

"I tried to tell Olivia. I tried to tell everyone.""

"Who was the baby?""

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

"One of the girls wasn't registered under her real name.""

I looked at the sleeping twins.

"What?""

"The hospital recorded three births. But only two babies left that maternity floor.""

My stomach tightened.

"That's impossible. We have photographs of Sophie and Ruby together.""

"Those photographs were taken after the transfer.""

"What transfer?""

Martha lowered her voice.

"Richard had one baby moved to another family. But the child he moved wasn't the one he intended to move.""

I gripped the phone.

"Explain.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Dr. Graves made a mistake. He switched the identification bracelets before the transfer. The wrong baby went with Richard.""

I looked toward Sophie.

Then Ruby.

"Which girl did he take?""

Martha started sobbing.

"I don't know. That's what the original records were supposed to prove.""

"Where are the records?""

"In locker 214. The key Olivia has will open it.""

I looked at Olivia.

She was standing in the doorway.

She had heard enough to understand.

"Martha," she whispered into the phone, "where are you?""

A man's voice suddenly interrupted.

"Who are you talking to?""

Martha gasped.

Then I heard a struggle.

"Damien!"" she screamed.

"Don't let Richard get the—"

The call disconnected.

I immediately called the number back.

It was switched off.

Olivia grabbed my arm.

"We have to go to the hospital.""

"We'll take the police.""

"No. Richard knows they're investigating. If he reaches the locker first, everything disappears.""

Detective Harris entered the room.

"What's happening?""

I explained the call.

He immediately ordered officers to secure the old maternity wing.

But before we could leave, a uniformed officer approached him.

"Detective, we've received a report from the hospital.""

Harris turned.

"What report?""

"A patient was admitted under a false name twenty minutes ago. Female, approximately forty years old. She requested to speak with Mr. Damien Carter.""

My heart raced.

"Is it Martha?""

The officer nodded.

"She gave us your name.""

Olivia covered her mouth.

"She's alive.""

"Where is she?""

"Room 307.""

We rushed down the corridor.

Martha was lying in a hospital bed, her face bruised, one arm wrapped in a bandage.

She looked at Olivia and began crying.

"I'm sorry.""

Olivia took her hand.

"You don't have to apologize.""

Martha shook her head.

"I should have told you everything years ago.""

I stepped closer.

"Who was the third baby?""

Martha looked toward the door.

Then she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small folded paper.

"I kept a copy of the original transfer form.""

I unfolded it.

Three names appeared.

Sophie Carter.

Ruby Bennett.

And a third name.

*Evelyn Graves.*

I looked at Martha.

"Who is Evelyn?""

Martha closed her eyes.

"Dr. Graves had a daughter. She was born that same night.""

I stared at the paper.

"You're saying his daughter was part of this?""

Martha nodded.

"He told everyone she was stillborn. But she wasn't.""

Olivia gripped the bedrail.

"Where is she?""

Martha looked directly at me.

"She's alive. And she's been working for Richard Bennett ever since she was old enough to understand what happened.""

I felt a chill move through my body.

"Who is she?""

Martha swallowed.

Then she said:

"She's the woman who has been visiting your daughter's school.""

Before I could respond, Detective Harris's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression changed.

"What do you mean the girls are gone?""

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

He looked at me.

"Mr. Carter, someone just entered the family room.""

Olivia screamed.

And from the hospital corridor, a child's voice called out:

"Dad?""

It sounded exactly like Sophie.

May you like

But Sophie was supposed to be sleeping beside Ruby.

And the voice was coming from the opposite end of the hallway.
