Chapter 3: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

Two newborn babies.

Two hospital identification bracelets.

One nurse.

And a timestamp that made no sense.

Sophie had been born at 2:13 a.m.

Ruby had supposedly been born eleven months later.

But the photograph showed them together.

One minute apart.

"Dad?""

Sophie's voice pulled me back.

"Where did you get this?""

"It was inside my school folder.""

I looked at her.

"Who gave it to you?""

"A man.""

My blood turned cold.

"What man?""

She hugged herself.

"He came to school yesterday. He said he was a friend of Mom's.""

I crouched in front of her.

"Did he talk to you alone?""

She nodded.

"He asked if I knew a girl named Ruby. Then he showed me a picture of you and Mom.""

"What else?""

"He said Mom had made a mistake a long time ago. He said he could help us find out the truth.""

I gripped her shoulders gently.

"Sophie, did he give you anything?""

She shook her head.

Then she hesitated.

"Actually, he gave me a card.""

She ran upstairs and returned with a white business card.

It had a name printed in silver letters.

*DR. ELLIOT GRAVES DIRECTOR OF MATERNAL RECORDS ST. AGNES MEDICAL CENTER*

I recognized the hospital immediately.

It was where Sophie had been born.

And where Olivia had disappeared.

I called the number.

A receptionist answered.

"St. Agnes Medical Center.""

"Is Dr. Elliot Graves available?""

"May I ask who's calling?""

"Damien Carter. My daughter was born at your hospital twelve years ago.""

There was a pause.

"Please hold.""

I heard muffled voices.

Then the receptionist returned.

"Dr. Graves is no longer affiliated with our institution.""

"Where can I find him?""

"I'm sorry. We cannot release private information.""

I hung up.

Then I called the police and reported the man who had approached Sophie at school.

The officer told me to bring the photograph to the station in the morning.

But morning was too far away.

Olivia was missing again.

And someone had threatened my daughters.

I called her phone repeatedly.

Nothing.

At 12:08 a.m., a message arrived.

*Don't go to the police. Find the blue locker.*

There was no name.

I read it twice.

Then another message came.

*Your wife knows where it is.*

I looked at the photograph.

In the bottom-right corner, almost hidden beneath the nurse's sleeve, was a blue metal cabinet.

A hospital locker.

On its door was a small white label.

Room 214.

I searched my old hospital records.

Room 214 had been listed as Olivia's recovery room.

I grabbed my jacket.

"Sophie, you're staying with Mrs. Wilson next door.""

She shook her head.

"I'm coming.""

"No.""

"Dad, Mom is missing. Ruby's missing too.""

I knelt beside her.

"I know you're scared. But I need you safe.""

Her eyes filled.

"You promised you wouldn't let anyone take us.""

I had no answer.

I called my neighbor, Mrs. Wilson, and asked her to stay with the girls.

Then I drove to St. Agnes.

The hospital looked different at night.

The emergency entrance glowed beneath fluorescent lights. A security guard sat behind a glass partition, watching a television with the volume turned low.

I approached the reception desk.

"I'm looking for the old maternity wing.""

The receptionist frowned.

"That wing was renovated years ago.""

"I need to see Room 214.""

"Are you a patient?""

"No. I'm looking for evidence concerning a birth that happened here twelve years ago.""

She looked uncomfortable.

"Sir, you need to speak with administration.""

"I've been trying.""

I showed her the photograph.

Her expression changed.

She stared at it for several seconds.

Then she looked toward the security desk.

"Wait here.""

She disappeared through a staff door.

A minute later, an older nurse emerged.

She had silver hair, tired eyes, and a name badge that read MARTHA LEWIS.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes.""

She glanced at the photograph.

"Where did you get this?""

"My daughter found it.""

Martha closed her eyes.

"Oh, God.""

I stepped closer.

"You know what happened?""

She looked around before speaking.

"Not here.""

She led me into a small staff room and shut the door.

For a moment, she simply stared at her hands.

Then she spoke.

"I was working the maternity floor that night.""

My heart hammered.

"You were there when my daughter was born?""

"Yes.""

"How many babies were delivered?""

Martha looked at me.

"Two.""

I felt the room go silent.

"Twins?""

She nodded.

"Identical twin girls.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Why did nobody tell me?""

"Because the birth records were changed.""

"By whom?""

She hesitated.

"Dr. Graves.""

I placed the photograph on the table.

"Who was the second baby registered to?""

Martha's eyes filled.

"Originally? Both babies were registered under Olivia Carter.""

I swallowed.

"Then why does Ruby have another last name?""

"Because a few hours after delivery, a man arrived with legal documents. He claimed the second child belonged to another family.""

"Which family?""

Martha whispered:

"The Bennetts.""

I stood.

"Richard Bennett.""

She nodded.

I paced the tiny room.

"Why would he steal his own granddaughter?""

Martha looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.

"Because he wasn't trying to steal a child, Mr. Carter.""

"Then what was he doing?""

"He was trying to steal an identity.""

Before I could ask what she meant, someone knocked sharply on the door.

Martha froze.

"Don't open it.""

Another knock.

Then a familiar voice.

"Mr. Carter?""

Dr. Elliot Graves.

I recognized his name immediately.

Martha grabbed my wrist.

"Whatever he tells you, don't believe him.""

The door opened.

A tall man in his late fifties stood in the doorway.

His gray hair was neatly combed, and his white shirt was immaculate.

He smiled as though we'd arranged this meeting.

"Damien. I've been expecting you.""

I stepped toward him.

"Where is my wife?""

Dr. Graves glanced at Martha.

"Still asking the wrong questions, I see.""

"Tell me what happened twelve years ago.""

He closed the door behind him.

"Your wife delivered twins. One healthy girl, and one girl with a serious medical condition.""

I frowned.

"That's a lie.""

"Is it?""

He pulled a folder from beneath his arm.

"Ruby was born with a congenital heart defect. Her treatment required an extraordinary amount of money. Richard Bennett offered to cover it, but only if certain arrangements were made.""

"What arrangements?""

"One child would remain with Olivia. The other would be raised by the Bennetts.""

I shook my head.

"Olivia would never agree to that.""

"She didn't.""

Martha lowered her head.

Graves continued.

"Richard had the hospital records altered. You were told Olivia had disappeared. Olivia was told that you had abandoned her and taken Sophie.""

I felt something inside me break.

"You separated us.""

"I followed orders.""

"You stole my daughters' childhood.""

Dr. Graves looked almost bored.

"Your daughters are alive, Mr. Carter. That's more than many families can say.""

I lunged toward him.

Martha grabbed my arm.

"Damien, stop!""

Graves straightened his jacket.

"You should be grateful. Richard gave Ruby access to the best medical care available. Without him, she might not have survived.""

"Where is Olivia?""

He didn't answer.

"Where is she?""

He looked at the photograph.

"She's with the man who has been protecting your family all these years.""

I stared at him.

"Richard?""

"No.""

Graves smiled faintly.

"Your wife's second husband.""

The room seemed to spin.

"Olivia told me she never loved him.""

"She may have told you that.""

"Who is he?""

Graves leaned closer.

"His name is Adrian Bennett.""

I felt sick.

"Is he related to Richard?""

"He's Richard's son.""

The implications began forming in my mind.

Adrian wasn't just the man Richard had chosen for Olivia.

He was the man who had helped keep her away from me.

I pulled out my phone.

"Tell me where he lives.""

Graves shook his head.

"That would be unwise.""

"Then tell me where Olivia is.""

He studied me for a long moment.

Finally, he said:

"Ask your daughter.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Ask Sophie what the man at her school told her about the second photograph.""

My phone rang.

It was Mrs. Wilson.

I answered immediately.

"What's wrong?""

Her voice was trembling.

"Damien, there's a man here asking for Sophie.""

"Don't let him inside!""

"He's showing me identification. He says he's from the hospital.""

"Call the police!""

Then I heard Sophie screaming in the background.

"Dad!""

The line went dead.

I ran out of the staff room.

Behind me, Martha shouted my name.

I didn't stop.

I raced through the hospital entrance and jumped into my car.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a photograph.

Sophie stood beside a black SUV.

A man had one hand on her shoulder.

And behind them, visible through the open rear door, sat Ruby.

Underneath the photograph was a message.

*BRING THE ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE TO THE OLD RIVERSIDE HOUSE. COME ALONE.*

Then another message appeared.

*OR YOU'LL NEVER SEE YOUR DAUGHTERS AGAIN.*

I slammed my foot on the accelerator.

But as I turned onto the highway, I noticed something in the photograph I'd missed.

The man holding Sophie wasn't Adrian Bennett.

It was the same man who had called me the night before.

The same man who had warned me to stay away from Ruby.

May you like

And he was wearing a hospital identification badge.

*DR. ELLIOT GRAVES.*
