Chapter 5: The Grandfather's Bargain
Richard Bennett didn't look like a monster.
That was the first thing that frightened me.
He looked like a grandfather who might buy his grandchildren expensive Christmas presents and complain about the price of school uniforms.
His gray suit was perfectly tailored. His shoes were polished. Even his cane appeared expensive.
He smiled at Sophie and Ruby.
"Look at you two. Twelve years old already.""
Sophie moved closer to Olivia.
Ruby didn't answer.
Richard sighed.
"Children are so sensitive.""
I stepped between him and the girls.
"Stay away from them.""
Richard glanced at me.
"Damien. You've always been an emotional man.""
"And you've always been a coward.""
Adrian shifted uncomfortably.
"Father, we should discuss the documents.""
Richard raised one hand.
"Not now.""
He approached the fireplace and placed his cane against the wall.
Then he turned toward Olivia.
"Darling, you've caused quite a mess.""
Olivia's jaw tightened.
"You stole my daughters.""
"I provided them with security.""
"You told me Sophie was dead.""
Richard adjusted his watch.
"At the time, that was necessary.""
"Necessary?"" Her voice broke.
"I spent years grieving a child who was sitting in another man's house!""
Richard looked almost irritated.
"Your grief was unfortunate, but it served its purpose.""
I lunged forward.
Adrian and another man immediately blocked my path.
Richard didn't even flinch.
"See, Damien? This is why you were never suitable for my daughter. You react before you understand.""
"Explain it, then.""
Richard smiled.
"Gladly.""
He sat in an armchair and gestured for everyone else to remain standing.
"Twelve years ago, my company was preparing for a major restructuring. My estate, my investments, and several private foundations were placed into a family trust. The trust required a direct descendant to inherit the controlling shares.""
I stared at him.
"Your granddaughter.""
"Correct.""
"Then why steal her identity?""
Richard folded his hands.
"Because the trust had a problem. My son Adrian was adopted. He had no biological children of his own. The trust's legal structure was complicated, and my advisers discovered a loophole.""
Olivia looked disgusted.
"You mean the twins.""
Richard nodded.
"Two biological grandchildren. Two different legal identities. One could be raised as a Carter, the other as a Bennett. It created options.""
"Options?"" I repeated.
Richard ignored me.
"Ruby was registered as Adrian's biological daughter. Sophie remained with Damien. Both girls were kept unaware of their connection.""
I looked at the twins.
They were listening to every word.
"Why?""
Richard leaned back.
"Because if the girls knew they were twins, their shared birth records could threaten the trust's ownership structure.""
Adrian finally spoke.
"Father, you said this was temporary.""
Richard looked at him.
"Everything is temporary, Adrian.""
"You promised me control of the company.""
"And you have received generous compensation.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
It was the first time I'd seen him look afraid of someone other than himself.
Olivia stepped forward.
"You destroyed our lives for money.""
Richard looked at her.
"No, Olivia. I gave you a life you would never have had with Damien.""
She laughed bitterly.
"I would rather have lived in a one-room apartment with him than spend one more day in your house.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Be careful.""
"No. I'm finished being careful.""
She turned toward me.
"Damien, there's something I never told you.""
Richard stood abruptly.
"That's enough.""
Olivia continued.
"The night the girls were born, Richard didn't just change the records. He arranged for one of the nurses to take a photograph of both babies. He needed proof that they were twins in case the inheritance was challenged.""
I looked at the photograph in my hand.
"That's why he wanted it?""
She nodded.
"But there's another photograph.""
Richard's face changed.
For the first time, the old man looked genuinely worried.
"Where is it?"" he demanded.
Olivia shook her head.
"Somewhere you can't reach.""
Richard turned to Adrian.
"Search her belongings.""
Adrian hesitated.
"Father—"
"Now!""
A guard moved toward Olivia.
I stepped in front of her.
"Nobody touches my wife.""
Richard looked at me with cold eyes.
"Your wife? You still don't understand. Olivia is the reason this family is in danger.""
Olivia shook her head.
"You're the reason.""
Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
"Let's end this.""
Inside was a legal agreement.
It stated that Olivia would surrender all parental rights to Sophie and Ruby. Damien would receive a substantial payment and agree never to contact the Bennett family again.
In exchange, Richard would provide financial security for both girls.
I stared at the document.
"You're offering me money to abandon my daughters?""
"I'm offering you a way out.""
Sophie suddenly stepped forward.
"My dad would never do that.""
Richard looked at her.
"Children shouldn't interfere in adult matters.""
"I'm not a child!""
Her voice shook, but she didn't back down.
"I'm your granddaughter. You should love us. But you keep trying to buy us like we're things.""
Richard's face turned red.
"Enough!""
Ruby began crying.
Olivia pulled both girls close.
I took the agreement and tore it in half.
Richard watched the pieces fall.
"Then you've chosen the difficult path.""
He nodded toward the guards.
Two men moved toward me.
Before they could reach us, the front door burst open.
Police officers flooded the room.
"Nobody move!""
For one glorious second, I thought it was over.
An officer approached Richard.
"Richard Bennett, we need you to come with us regarding an ongoing investigation into child abduction and falsification of medical records.""
Richard didn't resist.
He simply smiled.
"You'll need more than a few old photographs to prove anything.""
Then he looked directly at me.
"And I wouldn't celebrate, Damien. The girls' legal identities are still a mess.""
The officers separated everyone.
Adrian was escorted outside.
Richard walked calmly beside the police.
But just before he crossed the doorway, he turned toward Olivia.
"You should tell him what happened to the first nurse.""
Olivia froze.
"What?""
Richard smiled.
"Ask Martha Lewis why she disappeared for six months after the twins were born.""
Then he was gone.
We spent the next hour giving statements.
The police took the photograph, the altered birth certificate, and the documents Richard had presented.
An officer named Detective Harris promised to investigate the hospital's records.
But I wasn't satisfied.
"Where is Dr. Graves?"" I asked.
Harris looked at his notes.
"We haven't located him.""
"He was at the hospital tonight.""
"He's disappeared.""
I looked at Olivia.
She was sitting beside the girls, holding their hands.
"Do you know what Richard meant about Martha?""
Olivia's eyes filled.
"Yes.""
"What happened?""
She hesitated.
"Martha was the only person who tried to help me.""
"What do you mean?""
"The night after the girls were born, she came to my room. She told me the babies were alive and that Richard had taken Ruby.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She tried. Richard's men intercepted her before she could reach you.""
"Then what?""
Olivia lowered her voice.
"She gave me something. A small key. She told me to hide it until the day someone came looking for both girls.""
I stared at her.
"Where is it?""
Olivia reached inside her coat and pulled out a tiny brass key.
A number had been engraved on its side.
214.
The old maternity room.
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""
"Because I didn't know whether I could trust you.""
That hurt more than I expected.
She immediately took my hand.
"I'm sorry. Richard convinced me that you had abandoned me. He showed me photographs of you with another woman. He sent letters that looked like they came from you.""
"I never wrote them.""
"I know.""
She wiped her eyes.
"But I believed them for years.""
I looked down at the key.
"What's it open?""
Olivia shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Then Detective Harris returned.
He was holding a tablet.
"Mr. Carter, we've identified something concerning.""
He showed me a security recording from outside Riverside House.
It showed Richard entering the mansion.
Then Adrian.
Then a third person.
A woman.
She wore a dark coat and carried a leather handbag.
I recognized her immediately.
Martha Lewis.
The nurse who had supposedly disappeared twelve years earlier.
I looked at Olivia.
She whispered:
"That's impossible. Martha died.""
Detective Harris enlarged the image.
"Apparently not.""
Then he played the audio.
May you like
Martha's voice came through the speakers.
"Richard, the girls aren't the only ones who were switched.""
