Chapter 2: The Woman Who Had Two Families

I didn't remember crossing the school parking lot.

One second, I was standing beside my car.

The next, I was between Olivia and the man in the charcoal suit.

"Get away from my family.""

The man didn't move.

He simply adjusted his cufflinks.

"You're making a scene, Mr. Carter.""

"Who are you?""

"Someone who would prefer that you went home.""

Olivia pulled Ruby behind her.

"Damien, listen to me. Take Sophie and leave.""

I stared at her.

"Twelve years. Twelve years, Olivia. I thought you were dead.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

"You know?""

My voice cracked.

"You know what those twelve years were like?""

Olivia opened her mouth, but the man interrupted.

"Mrs. Bennett, we should leave.""

"Don't call her that!"" I shouted.

The man's expression hardened.

"Be careful, Mr. Carter. You don't understand the situation.""

I stepped closer.

"I understand that you're standing between me and my wife.""

He reached inside his jacket.

I instinctively moved Sophie behind me.

Olivia noticed.

"Damien, don't!""

The man pulled out a phone, not a weapon.

He checked the screen and looked at Olivia.

"Your appointment has been moved. You have fifteen minutes.""

Olivia shook her head.

"I'm not going anywhere with you.""

For the first time, the man's calm expression cracked.

"Your father won't appreciate that answer.""

Olivia flinched.

I noticed.

"Her father?"" I asked.

The man ignored me.

He opened the rear door of the SUV.

Olivia looked at Ruby, then at Sophie.

Something desperate passed between her eyes.

"Go home, Damien. I'll explain everything.""

"No.""

"Please.""

"No! You don't get to disappear for twelve years and then tell me to go home!""

A teacher approached, asking whether everything was all right.

The man stepped back.

He smiled politely.

"Just a family misunderstanding.""

Then he returned to the SUV.

Before driving away, he lowered the window.

"Mr. Carter, you should ask the hospital what happened at 2:13 a.m. on March seventeenth.""

My heart stopped.

That was the night Sophie was born.

The SUV disappeared around the corner.

Olivia remained frozen beside Ruby.

I took a step toward her.

"Come with me.""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because they'll find us.""

"Who?""

She looked at Ruby.

Then at Sophie.

And finally at me.

"The people who paid to make sure you never found me.""

We went to a small diner three blocks from the school.

Olivia sat opposite me while the girls shared a milkshake.

She barely touched her coffee.

I couldn't stop looking at her hands.

Her wedding ring was gone.

"Where have you been?"" I finally asked.

She stared at the table.

"At first, in a hospital. Then in a house. Then in three different cities.""

"Who took you?""

"My father.""

I blinked.

"Your father died when you were twenty.""

"That's what he wanted everyone to believe.""

I remembered Olivia's childhood stories. Her father, Richard Bennett, had supposedly died in a boating accident when she was young.

She rarely spoke about him.

"Richard Bennett is alive?""

Olivia nodded.

"He's the man who owns the black SUV?""

"No. He owns much more than that.""

She explained that her father had built a private medical investment company with interests in hospitals, clinics, and pharmaceutical research.

He controlled people through money, favors, and secrets.

When Olivia married me, Richard had objected.

He believed I was beneath his family.

"He offered me money to leave you," she said.

"And you refused?""

"Of course.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Then why didn't you come home?""

Olivia looked at me.

"Because I wasn't allowed to.""

She told me that on the night Sophie was born, Richard had arrived at the hospital.

He'd claimed there was an emergency involving the baby.

Olivia had been moved to another room while I was signing paperwork downstairs.

When she woke up, Sophie was gone.

A nurse told her that the baby had died.

Olivia screamed until her throat bled.

Then Richard arrived with another woman.

He told Olivia that she had suffered complications during delivery and that she would never be allowed to see her husband again.

"He said if I contacted you, he'd make sure you lost Sophie forever.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. I took Sophie home myself.""

Olivia covered her mouth.

"What?""

I felt sick.

"She was in the nursery when I got back. The hospital said you'd left.""

Olivia shook her head violently.

"No. Damien, I never saw our daughter.""

The girls had stopped drinking their milkshake.

Sophie looked at me.

"Dad?""

I squeezed her hand.

Olivia turned toward her.

For the first time, she really looked at Sophie.

Her eyes filled.

"You're beautiful," she whispered.

Sophie looked down.

"Why didn't you come find me?""

Olivia started crying.

"I tried, sweetheart. Every birthday, every Christmas. I tried.""

Ruby reached across the table and held her mother's hand.

"Mom, you said I had a sister.""

Olivia nodded.

"I did.""

"Is Sophie really my sister?""

"Yes.""

Ruby looked at Sophie.

Then she smiled shyly.

"That's cool.""

Sophie managed a small smile.

For a few minutes, the four of us sat together.

It felt like the family I had imagined for twelve years.

Then Olivia ruined it with one sentence.

"Damien, there's something else you need to know.""

I looked at her.

"Tell me.""

"Ruby isn't twelve.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"She's eleven.""

Sophie looked confused.

"But we're both in seventh grade.""

Olivia swallowed.

"Ruby was born eleven months after Sophie.""

The room seemed to tilt.

I stared at Ruby.

Then at Olivia.

"Are you saying...""

She nodded.

"Richard told me you were dead. He told me you had married someone else and taken Sophie away.""

My mouth went dry.

"Olivia, I never stopped looking for you.""

"I know that now.""

"Then how did you have another child?""

She lowered her eyes.

"Because Richard wanted to replace the family he believed I'd lost.""

The words hung between us.

I couldn't understand.

"Explain.""

Olivia wiped her tears.

"He arranged my marriage to another man. He said Ruby would be my second chance. But I never loved that man. And when I finally discovered what Richard had done, I ran.""

"Who was the man?""

Olivia looked toward the window.

Before she could answer, my phone buzzed.

An unknown number had sent a photograph.

It showed Sophie and Ruby sitting together in the diner.

Taken from outside.

Underneath was a message.

*ONE DAUGHTER WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU DISAPPEAR. DON'T MAKE US TAKE BOTH.*

I stood immediately.

"Olivia, we have to leave.""

She saw the message.

Her face lost all color.

"He's found us.""

I paid the bill, took the girls, and hurried toward the parking lot.

But Olivia stayed behind.

I turned.

"What are you doing?""

She looked terrified.

"Damien, you don't understand. If Richard knows we're together, he'll use the girls to force me back.""

"Then we'll protect them.""

She shook her head.

"You can't protect them from what he knows.""

I reached for her hand.

"Try me.""

For a moment, she looked like the woman I'd married.

Then she whispered:

"Richard isn't the only person who knows what happened in that hospital.""

That night, I took the girls to my house.

Olivia refused to come.

She said she needed to retrieve something from the apartment where she'd been staying.

I wanted to stop her.

But she promised to return before midnight.

At 11:42 p.m., my phone rang.

It was Olivia.

"Damien, I found the photograph.""

"What photograph?""

"The hospital photograph from the night Sophie was born. It proves everything.""

"Where are you?""

Her breathing was uneven.

"Listen carefully. There's a man in this house. He's not with my father.""

"Olivia, leave now!""

She whispered something.

Then I heard a door slam.

A man's voice said:

"Give me the photograph, Olivia.""

She screamed.

The call disconnected.

I grabbed my keys.

But before I could leave, Sophie appeared at the top of the stairs, holding a piece of paper.

"Dad?""

"What is it?""

She handed it to me.

It was an old hospital photograph.

A newborn baby lay in a bassinet.

And beside the bassinet stood a nurse holding another infant.

On the back, someone had written two names.

*SOPHIE CARTER — 2:13 A.M.*

*RUBY BENNETT — 2:14 A.M.*

I stared at the photograph.

Two babies.

Born one minute apart.

Twelve years earlier.

May you like

And suddenly, I understood that Olivia hadn't simply given birth to two daughters.

Someone had spent twelve years making sure neither of us knew they existed.
