Chapter 7: The Girl Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
"Dad?""
The voice came again.
I ran into the corridor.
A little girl stood near the elevator.
She looked twelve years old.
She had dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and the same small scar above her right eyebrow that Sophie and Ruby shared.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The girl looked directly at me.
"Are you Damien Carter?""
I approached slowly.
"Who are you?""
She held up a photograph.
It showed three newborn babies lying beside one another in a hospital bassinet.
Not two.
Three.
"I think you know my mother," she said.
Behind me, Olivia appeared in the doorway.
The moment she saw the girl, she stopped breathing.
"Evelyn?""
The girl nodded.
"Hello, Olivia.""
Olivia covered her mouth.
"You're alive.""
Evelyn looked down.
"Apparently, that's been a problem for everyone.""
Detective Harris approached cautiously.
"Young lady, we need you to explain how you got here.""
Evelyn looked at him.
"I came to tell them the truth before my grandfather gets here.""
I stared at her.
"Your grandfather?""
She nodded.
"Richard Bennett.""
Olivia shook her head.
"No. Richard isn't your grandfather. Your father is Dr. Graves.""
"Biologically, yes. But Richard raised me.""
I remembered Martha's words.
Dr. Graves had claimed his daughter was stillborn.
Richard had taken her.
And now she was standing in front of us.
"Why did Richard take you?"" I asked.
Evelyn looked toward Olivia.
"Because my father made a mistake.""
She explained that Dr. Graves had been struggling financially when Richard offered him a position at the hospital. Richard paid for Evelyn's medical care, education, and private schooling.
In return, Graves agreed to alter the records of the three babies born that night.
But something went wrong.
The original plan had been to take Ruby and register her as Adrian's daughter.
Instead, the identification bracelets were switched during a transfer.
Richard received the wrong baby.
Evelyn received the identity that belonged to one of the Carter twins.
The result was a child who officially existed under three different names.
For years, Richard kept her hidden.
He eventually brought her into his household and trained her to monitor the family.
"That's why you approached Sophie at school," I said.
Evelyn nodded.
"I was supposed to find out whether she had the original photograph.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard was afraid the photograph would expose the switch.""
Olivia stepped closer.
"Did you know who I was?""
Evelyn looked at her.
"Yes.""
"Did you know Sophie was my daughter?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you help us?""
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"Because I was twelve when they first told me my father would go to prison if I spoke. Then Richard told me you'd all be hurt if I tried to leave.""
She wiped her face.
"I didn't know how to escape.""
Martha appeared in the doorway behind us.
She looked exhausted, but when she saw Evelyn, she began to cry.
"Sweetheart.""
Evelyn turned.
"Martha.""
The nurse approached her carefully.
"I've looked for you for twelve years.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"You couldn't have found me. Richard changed everything.""
Martha took her hand.
"I kept the records.""
Evelyn nodded.
"I know. That's why I'm here.""
She reached into her coat and pulled out a small USB drive.
"This contains copies of everything. Birth records, transfer orders, payments, and the original hospital security footage.""
Detective Harris immediately took it.
"Where did you get this?""
"My father's office.""
"Does Richard know?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"Not yet.""
Then her phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went white.
A message had appeared.
*YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO RETURN HOME. BRING THE DRIVE.*
A second message followed.
*OR YOUR FATHER DIES.*
Evelyn began trembling.
I took the phone.
"Who's sending this?""
"Richard.""
I looked toward the detective.
"We need to get Dr. Graves.""
Harris immediately called for officers to locate him.
But before he could finish, another message arrived.
This one contained a photograph.
Dr. Graves was sitting in a chair in a dark room.
His face was bruised.
A man stood behind him holding a gun.
The message read:
*THE OLD RIVERSIDE CLINIC. MIDNIGHT. NO POLICE.*
I looked at the clock.
11:26 p.m.
"He's using his own son to force her back," Olivia whispered.
Evelyn nodded.
"He always does.""
We moved the girls to a secure police facility.
Sophie and Ruby were reunited with me within twenty minutes.
Sophie ran into my arms.
"Dad! Where were you?""
"I was finding out the truth.""
Ruby hugged Olivia.
"Are we going home?""
Olivia kissed her hair.
"Not yet, sweetheart.""
Detective Harris explained that the police would establish a perimeter around the old clinic.
But Evelyn refused to cooperate with the plan.
"If Richard sees police cars, he'll kill my father.""
Harris remained firm.
"We are not sending anyone into a dangerous location without backup.""
Evelyn looked at me.
"Then you don't understand him.""
I studied the girl.
She had spent her entire childhood inside Richard's world.
She knew how he operated.
"What's he planning?"" I asked.
She swallowed.
"He's going to make you choose.""
"Choose what?""
"Which daughter gets to leave.""
Olivia grabbed her shoulders.
"Nobody is choosing between my children.""
Evelyn looked at her sadly.
"That's what he wants you to say.""
She pulled another folded document from her pocket.
It was a medical report.
The heading read:
*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY ELIGIBILITY REVIEW.*
Beneath it were three names.
Sophie Carter.
Ruby Bennett.
Evelyn Graves.
All three were listed as potential beneficiaries.
But a handwritten note at the bottom caught my attention.
*Only one biological heir may assume control.*
I looked at Evelyn.
"What does that mean?""
She lowered her eyes.
"Richard doesn't care about the money anymore. He wants to erase the evidence that the girls were ever switched.""
"How?""
She looked directly at me.
"By making one of us disappear.""
Then she pointed to the final line of the report.
*TRANSFER AUTHORIZED BY: ADRIAN BENNETT.*
Olivia went still.
"Adrian signed this?""
Evelyn nodded.
"He's been working with Richard all along.""
I looked toward the security door.
Outside, police officers were preparing vehicles.
For the first time, I realized the danger wasn't just Richard.
Adrian had been planning something independently.
And he knew exactly where the girls were.
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
"Damien, I think we need to talk.""
Adrian.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere your daughters will never find me.""
"What do you want?""
He laughed softly.
"To fix what my father broke.""
Then he said something that made my blood turn cold.
May you like
"Because one of those girls isn't actually Olivia's daughter.""
The line disconnected.
