Chapter 8: The Daughter Between Two Worlds

When I arrived home, Lily was sitting on the front steps.

She looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Just tired.

For a moment, I saw the little girl who used to wait for me to come home from work.

Then she looked away.

“I almost left with him.””

The honesty surprised me.

I sat beside her.

“You don’t have to tell me that.””

“Yes, I do.””

Her voice cracked.

“Because I don’t understand anything anymore.””

I stayed quiet.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do was not defend yourself.

Not immediately.

Not when someone you love was hurting.

“I wanted to believe him,” she continued.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She wiped her eyes quickly.

“Because he came back.””

That answer hurt because I understood it.

A child doesn’t stop wanting their parent.

Even after years.

Even after disappointment.

A part of them keeps waiting.

“I spent my whole life wondering why he didn’t choose me,” Lily whispered.

I looked down.

“And now he did.””

There it was.

The real wound.

Not the money.

Not the trust.

Not the documents.

Lily just wanted her father to finally choose her.

And Daniel knew that.

He knew exactly what she needed to hear.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

She looked at me.

“For what?””

“For all the years you waited.””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought you hated him.””

“I didn’t.””

“You never defended him either.””

I smiled sadly.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From loving someone who wasn’t showing up.””

She looked away.

“I still love him.””

“I know.””

The answer surprised her.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

She frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he’s your father.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And you?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I didn’t know what I was allowed to be anymore.

A mother?

A stranger?

Someone from her past?

Finally, I said:

“I’m the person who loves you.””

She looked at me.

Not stepdaughter.

Not daughter.

Just you.

I wanted to believe that mattered.

Then her phone buzzed.

She checked the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She handed me the phone.

It was a message from Daniel.

I’m sorry she’s confusing you. Meet me tonight. I’ll explain everything.

Below it was an attachment.

A photo.

A bank statement.

My name was on it.

My heart sank.

“Lily…”

She looked at me.

“What is that?””

I opened the file.

It showed a transfer from the trust.

A large amount.

A payment.

And beside it was my name.

I stared.

Because I had never seen that account.

Never touched that money.

But the document looked real.

“I don’t understand.””

Lily pulled the phone back.

“Neither do I.””

The fear in her voice was worse than anger.

Because now she was questioning everything.

“I need to go.””

“Where?””

“To meet him.””

I stood.

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because he knows you’re vulnerable right now.””

“That doesn’t mean he’s lying.””

“No.””

I took a breath.

“It means you deserve answers without being pressured.””

She stared at me.

Then quietly said:

“I don’t know if I can trust you.””

The words hurt.

But I nodded.

“I understand.””

She walked away.

I watched her disappear inside the house.

The same house where I had watched her grow up.

The same house where she had taken her first steps.

The same house where she now looked at me like I was someone dangerous.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

At 2:14 a.m., I heard a noise downstairs.

I walked out of my bedroom.

The front door was open.

My heart raced.

Then I saw Lily standing in the living room.

Holding the old family photo album.

“What are you doing?””

She looked up.

Her face was pale.

“I found something.””

I walked closer.

“What?””

She opened the album.

A photograph slipped out.

An old photograph I had never seen before.

It showed Daniel.

His lawyer.

And Lily’s mother.

Standing together.

The date on the back was from one week before Daniel left.

Lily turned the photo over.

There was writing on it.

A message from her mother.

May you like

And when Lily read it aloud, my entire body went cold.

“‘If Daniel ever tells you I abandoned him… remember this day.’”
