Chapter 17: The Person He Used As A Shield

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

My name.

On Daniel’s account.

An account I had never opened.

An account I had never used.

An account that could make me look guilty.

Lily watched my face carefully.

“Are you okay?””

I laughed softly.

“No.””

And for once, I allowed myself to say it.

I wasn’t okay.

I had spent ten years trying to be strong for everyone.

For Lily.

For Daniel’s absence.

For the grief our family carried.

But now I was realizing something terrifying.

Daniel had built a trap.

And he had built it with my name on it.

“I need to see those records,” I said.

Margaret arranged a meeting immediately.

Two hours later, we sat in her office.

She placed a folder on the table.

“This is everything I have.””

I opened it.

The first document was a bank authorization form.

My signature.

My information.

My address.

Everything looked real.

Except one thing.

The date.

I looked closer.

“This was signed after Lily’s mother died.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I never signed anything after that date.””

Lily looked at me.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

And then I remembered.

The night after the funeral.

Daniel came to the house.

He brought paperwork.

He told me there were things that needed to be handled.

He said he was too emotional.

He said he needed my help.

I remembered signing pages.

But I never read them.

Because I trusted him.

The realization hit me.

“He had me sign blank documents.””

Margaret’s face became serious.

“That is what it appears.””

Lily looked horrified.

“Dad did that?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The worst part wasn’t the betrayal.

It was remembering how much I trusted him.

How I defended him.

How I told Lily he was probably just hurting.

I had protected the person hurting us.

Margaret pointed to another document.

“But there’s something Daniel didn’t know.””

“What?””

“The bank flagged the account.””

“Why?””

“Because the transfer was suspicious.””

I looked up.

“Then why didn’t anything happen?””

“Because Daniel disappeared.””

Of course.

He left before anyone could question him.

Before anyone could investigate.

Before anyone could connect the pieces.

“He planned everything,” Lily whispered.

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily looked down.

“I spent years waiting for him.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought he didn’t come back because he forgot me.””

I reached for her hand.

“He never forgot you.””

She looked at me.

“He used me.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because that was the cruelest truth.

He hadn’t forgotten her.

He remembered exactly what she meant to him.

A key.

A way back to money.

A way to rewrite the past.

My phone rang.

Thomas.

The attorney.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice sounded urgent.

“You need to know something before Daniel makes his next move.””

“What move?””

“He filed paperwork this morning.””

My stomach tightened.

“What paperwork?””

“A request for temporary guardianship.””

Lily went pale.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“He’s claiming you are financially irresponsible and emotionally unstable.””

I closed my eyes.

The final attack.

“He’s using the account.””

“Yes.””

“He’s saying I stole from Lily.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Lily.

“He’s trying to take control before she turns eighteen.””

Thomas went quiet.

Then said:

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“He submitted evidence.””

My heart sank.

“What evidence?””

“A recording.””

The room became silent.

“A recording of you discussing the trust.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas’s voice lowered.

“Listen to me.””

“What?””

“Daniel recorded you ten years ago.””

My hands went cold.

“When?””

“The night he left.””

I looked at Lily.

Because suddenly I understood.

Daniel wasn’t just preparing to return.

He had been preparing for this battle since the day he walked away.

And he had kept one final piece of evidence hidden.

A recording that could destroy everything.
