Chapter 14: The Evidence He Left Behind

The next morning, Thomas sent everything.

Documents.

Emails.

Old messages.

Proof of a decade-long plan.

I sat at the kitchen table while Lily read through them beside me.

Neither of us spoke much.

There was too much to process.

Too much to undo.

Every page changed another piece of the story.

Daniel had spent years preparing.

He had contacted lawyers.

He had researched the trust.

He had tracked Lily’s birthday.

He had even kept notes about conversations.

Not memories.

Not moments.

Notes.

Like Lily was a problem to solve.

A strategy.

A goal.

Lily stared at one page for several minutes.

“What is this?””

I looked over.

It was a list.

Dates.

Events.

Comments.

At the top:

Relationship rebuilding timeline.

My stomach turned.

“He planned when to come back.””

Lily’s voice was barely audible.

“No.””

She kept reading.

“Graduation.””

A pause.

“First emotional conversation.””

Another pause.

“Introduce idea of moving.””

She looked up.

“He scheduled my life.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because I knew exactly how it felt.

To realize someone you loved had been playing a role.

A knock came at the door.

We both looked up.

It was Evelyn.

She carried another box.

“I found one more thing.””

Lily opened the door.

“What?””

Evelyn looked tired.

“Your mother kept a journal.””

My heart stopped.

“A journal?””

“She didn’t write every day. Only when things became difficult.””

Lily took it carefully.

“Why didn’t you give this to me before?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Because your mother wanted you to read it when you were old enough to understand that love and truth can exist together.””

Lily opened the journal.

The first pages were normal.

Memories.

Pregnancy.

Baby pictures.

Stories about Lily’s first steps.

Then the entries changed.

Daniel’s name appeared more often.

Lily read silently.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“She knew.””

“About what?””

She turned the journal around.

The entry was dated one month before Daniel left.

I found the withdrawals.

My breath caught.

Lily continued reading.

Daniel says he borrowed the money because he was desperate. He promises he will return it.

Another page.

I want to believe him. I want Lily to have the father she deserves.

Another.

But I am afraid.

Lily’s hands shook.

“Mom was scared of him.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She was scared of what he might do if he lost control.””

Lily closed the journal.

“I defended him.””

Her voice cracked.

“I spent ten years defending him.””

I reached toward her.

But stopped.

Because I didn’t know if she wanted comfort from me.

Then she surprised me.

She grabbed my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

The words were so quiet I almost missed them.

“For what?””

“For believing him.””

My eyes filled.

“You don’t have to apologize for loving your father.””

“But I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“But I know why.””

She looked at me.

“I wanted him to come back so badly that I ignored everything else.””

I squeezed her hand.

“I know.””

For the first time in days, we sat together without a wall between us.

Then Lily’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

She looked at it.

“What does it say?””

She didn’t answer.

I watched her expression change.

“What?””

She handed me the phone.

The message was short.

I know what you found.

Another message appeared.

But there’s something your mother never told you.

A third message.

Ask your stepmother why she was the last person your mother called before she died.

My blood froze.

Because that wasn’t possible.

I wasn’t the last person.

I was never there.

Lily looked at me.

“You said you didn’t talk to her that night.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why would Dad say that?””

I stared at the message.

Because Daniel was lying.

I knew that.

But the terrifying part was something else.

What if he wasn’t lying completely?

What if there was one phone call I had forgotten?

May you like

One conversation I had buried?

One moment from that night I had spent ten years trying not to remember?
