Chapter 6: The Lawyer Who Stayed Silent

The next morning, I drove to the address attached to the name I found in the old documents.

entity["people","Margaret Ellis"," I remembered Lily’s face.

The confusion.

The disappointment.

She deserved the truth.

Even if it hurt me.

I walked inside.

The receptionist looked up.

“Can I help you?””

“I’m here to see Margaret Ellis.””

“Do you have an appointment?””

“No.””

The woman hesitated.

“Ms. Ellis is very busy.””

I placed the old document on the counter.

“I think she’ll want to see this.””

The receptionist looked down.

Then her expression changed.

Five minutes later, I was sitting across from Margaret.

She was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

The kind of face that carried too many secrets.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

Those were her first words.

Not hello.

Not welcome.

A warning.

I leaned forward.

“Why?””

She looked at the document.

“Because I was hoping this day would never happen.””

My heart sank.

“You knew Daniel was coming back?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“How long have you known?””

Margaret sighed.

“Since before Lily’s mother died.””

I felt anger rise.

“You knew?””

“I knew Daniel was struggling financially.””

“Struggling?””

I laughed bitterly.

“He disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Margaret looked away.

“Your husband—”

“He wasn’t my husband.””

She paused.

“Daniel was Lily’s father. Her mother believed he loved her. But she also knew he was reckless.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because Lily’s mother made a decision.””

“What decision?””

Margaret opened a drawer.

She pulled out a folder.

A thick folder.

Thicker than the one Daniel brought.

“I was instructed to give this to you only if Daniel returned asking for control of the trust.””

My hands shook.

“Why me?””

Margaret looked directly at me.

“Because Lily’s mother trusted you.””

I stared at the folder.

“What is inside?””

“Everything.””

I opened it.

The first page was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

But this time, the words weren’t for Lily.

They were for me.

To the woman who will love my daughter when I can’t…

I stopped breathing.

Margaret watched me carefully.

“She wrote that two weeks before she passed.””

I read the next line.

I know you never asked to become Lily’s mother. But I have watched you choose her every day.

My eyes blurred.

Because I had spent ten years wondering if Lily saw me.

And now I was reading proof that her real mother had.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And one sentence made my blood run cold.

If Daniel returns after years away, do not let him convince Lily that abandonment is the same thing as love.

I closed the folder.

“He planned this.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because three years ago, Daniel came to me.””

My heart stopped.

“What did he want?””

Margaret’s voice became quiet.

“He wanted to know exactly when Lily would turn eighteen.””

The room went silent.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The graduation.

The sudden return.

The expensive suit.

The envelope.

He wasn’t coming back to rebuild a relationship.

He was racing against a birthday.

And Lily’s eighteenth birthday was only three months away.

Margaret pushed another document toward me.

“This is the part you need to see.””

I looked down.

It was a copy of a legal agreement.

And at the bottom was Daniel’s signature.

But above it was a date.

A date from ten years ago.

The day he left.

My eyes widened.

Because the document proved something impossible.

Daniel hadn’t abandoned Lily.

Not exactly.

He had signed away something much bigger.

And when I read what he had given up, I realized the man who walked back into Lily’s life wasn’t just hiding money.

He was hiding the reason he left.
