Chapter 4: The Letter From Her Mother

Lily held the paper with both hands.

At first, she looked confused.

Then she looked afraid.

The hallway around us continued moving. Graduates walked past carrying balloons. Parents laughed while taking pictures. A little boy chased his sister near the entrance.

But none of that mattered.

Because Lily was reading words written by the mother she barely remembered.

The mother who had trusted me with something I never knew existed.

Her lips moved silently as she read.

Then she stopped.

“Why is your name on this?””

Her voice was no longer angry.

It was smaller.

Like the little girl who used to sit beside me during storms.

I looked at the paper.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

“Because your mother was confused when she wrote it.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“No, Daniel,” I said.

“You don’t get to do this anymore.””

Lily looked at him.

“Do what?””

Daniel’s expression softened instantly.

The same performance he had perfected over the years.

“Sweetheart, you’re overwhelmed. This is a lot to process.””

She looked down at the letter again.

“Dad, why does she have control over my trust?””

Daniel hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Lily noticed.

Everyone noticed.

“I asked you a question.””

Daniel sighed.

“Because she was closer to you at the time.””

I almost laughed.

At the time.

As if ten years of raising a child was just a temporary assignment.

“I was there,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“I was there.””

My voice shook, but I didn’t stop.

“I was there when Lily had nightmares. I was there when she got sick. I was there when she learned to drive.

I was there when she cried after her first breakup. I was there every single time you weren’t.””

Lily’s eyes flickered.

For a moment, I saw something.

A memory.

A doubt.

Daniel noticed it too.

“That doesn’t change the fact that I’m her father.””

“No,” I replied.

“It doesn’t.””

The hallway became quiet.

“Being a father isn’t just a title.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You think you can replace me?””

I looked at Lily.

“No.””

The answer came easily.

“I never wanted to replace you.””

That was the truth.

I had spent ten years trying not to replace her mother.

I had only wanted Lily to feel loved.

Daniel took the letter from Lily’s hand.

“This conversation is over.””

But Lily grabbed it back.

“No.””

The single word surprised him.

She looked at him carefully.

“I want to know what my mom wrote.””

Daniel froze.

I watched his fingers tighten.

A small reaction.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Because I had spent ten years learning every expression on Lily’s face.

And I realized something terrifying.

Daniel was not afraid of losing Lily.

He was afraid of what was written on that paper.

Lily unfolded the letter completely.

Her mother’s handwriting covered the page.

Dear Lily,

If you are reading this, it means you are old enough to understand things I couldn’t explain when you were younger.

Lily swallowed.

Her eyes moved faster.

Then she read one sentence aloud.

“‘I need you to know that your father loves you, but love without responsibility can hurt people.’”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Stop reading.””

Lily looked up.

“Why?””

“Because your mother was sick. She wasn’t thinking clearly.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“How dare you.””

Daniel ignored me.

“Lily, she was going through treatment. She was scared. She didn’t know what she was saying.””

Lily looked back at the letter.

Her voice trembled.

“‘If Daniel ever comes back asking for control of the trust, please make sure he proves he has changed.’”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Lily slowly looked at her father.

“Control?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The question hung between them.

“What trust?””

He looked away.

And that was the moment Lily understood.

Not everything.

Not yet.

But enough.

The man she had spent ten years defending had hidden something.

I stepped closer.

“Lily, I didn’t know about the trust until today.””

She looked at me.

“I believe you.””

The words almost broke me.

Because they were simple.

But after everything that happened, they meant more than she could understand.

Daniel’s expression turned cold.

“You’re choosing her?””

Lily frowned.

“I’m asking questions.””

“No. She’s manipulating you.””

“I’m not.””

“You always wanted me out of the picture.””

I stared at him.

“That’s not true.””

Then Daniel smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

And I knew immediately.

He had another weapon.

“You want the truth?””

He looked at Lily.

“Ask her why she never told you your mother left you something.””

My heart stopped.

Because I didn’t know what he was about to reveal.

But I knew one thing.

May you like

Daniel wasn’t finished destroying the image Lily had of me.

And this time, I had no idea what secret he was about to uncover.
