Chapter 15: The Call Before Goodbye

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was afraid of Daniel.

Because I was afraid of my own memory.

There are moments your mind protects you from.

Not because they are unimportant.

Because they hurt too much.

The night Lily’s mother died was one of those moments.

I remembered the hospital.

The waiting room.

The silence.

But there was a piece missing.

A piece I had buried.

I went into the attic the next morning.

Lily followed.

“Are you looking for something?””

I nodded.

“Old phone records.””

She frowned.

“From ten years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I looked at her.

“Because your father might be lying.””

She understood immediately.

“But you’re not sure.””

That was the problem.

I wasn’t.

I searched through old boxes.

Bills.

Photos.

Letters.

Then I found an old folder.

My hands shook when I opened it.

Inside were printed phone records from my old number.

I had kept them because of insurance paperwork.

I scanned the pages.

Then stopped.

There it was.

A call.

The date.

The time.

The night Lily’s mother died.

My name appeared.

The call lasted six minutes.

Lily looked at me.

“You called her?””

I stared at the record.

“I forgot.””

“How?””

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly the memory returned.

I was sitting beside Lily’s bed.

She had finally fallen asleep.

My phone rang.

Her mother.

I answered.

Her voice was weak.

But she sounded calm.

“Can you hear me?””

I remember saying yes.

I remember crying.

I remember telling her I would come.

And then…

Daniel.

He took the phone.

I opened my eyes.

“He answered.””

Lily froze.

“What?””

“Your father.””

She looked confused.

“He took the phone?””

I nodded slowly.

“He said your mother was tired.””

I remembered his voice.

Cold.

Controlled.

“She wanted to talk to you.””

Lily whispered.

“But he stopped you.””

I nodded.

“He said I should stay with you.””

A terrible silence filled the attic.

“He made it sound like he was protecting us.””

Lily looked away.

“And he wasn’t.””

“No.””

The truth finally arrived.

Ten years late.

But it arrived.

I picked up the phone records.

“He knew.””

Lily looked at me.

“Knew what?””

“That your mother wanted me there.””

The room felt smaller.

“He knew she called me.””

“And he never told you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Lily sat down.

“He took away my last chance.””

I had no words.

Because that was the cruelest thing Daniel had done.

Not the money.

Not the lies.

He had stolen a final goodbye.

A few hours later, Daniel called.

Lily answered.

I watched her face.

“Why did you lie?””

Silence.

Then:

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Don’t say no.””

Another pause.

“Dad, why did you take Mom’s phone?””

My heart stopped.

Daniel said something.

I couldn’t hear.

Lily’s expression changed.

“You thought you were protecting me?””

She laughed bitterly.

“No.””

She stood.

“You were protecting yourself.””

A long silence.

Then she said:

“I know about the trust.””

Daniel reacted immediately.

Even from across the room, I could hear his panic.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I understand everything now.””

Daniel tried again.

“Lily, listen to me.””

But she interrupted.

“No. You listen.””

She looked at me.

Then continued.

“You spent ten years letting me hate the wrong person.””

Her eyes filled.

“You let me hurt someone who loved me.””

The call went quiet.

Then Daniel said:

“You’re choosing her over me?””

Lily closed her eyes.

And answered:

“I’m choosing the truth.””

She ended the call.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

One sentence.

If you think you know the truth, wait until you see what she did with the money.

I stared at the screen.

Because I knew this wasn’t over.

May you like

Daniel had one final weapon.

And somehow, he still believed it would destroy me.
