Chapter 6: The Secret Adrian Buried

Adrian didn’t speak for several seconds.

The entire boardroom watched him.

The man who had spent years commanding rooms was suddenly standing in one he no longer controlled.

Then, slowly, he looked at me.

“You planned this.””

I closed the folder.

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“You did.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You planned everything.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

Because somewhere beneath the anger was disappointment.

I had loved this man.

I had defended him.

I had built beside him.

And he had looked at all of that and decided it was something he could throw away.

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You think you’ve won?””

The board members exchanged uneasy looks.

I studied him.

“Have I not?””

His smile returned.

But it was different.

Desperate.

“You still don’t know everything.””

I felt a small shift inside me.

“What does that mean?””

He looked around the room.

Then back at me.

“Ask your father.””

The room went silent.

My father had been dead for five years.

I hated that Adrian knew exactly where to strike.

“You don’t get to use him.””

“I’m not.””

He leaned forward.

“I’m telling you the truth.””

I looked at Thomas.

He seemed just as surprised.

“What truth?”” I asked.

Adrian smiled faintly.

“The truth about why your father chose me.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“You thought your marriage was just a business alliance?””

I said nothing.

“Claire, your father didn’t invest in Hawthorne Industries because he believed in my family.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“Then why?””

Adrian looked satisfied.

Because he finally had something I didn’t know.

“Because he needed access.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“To what?””

He smiled.

“Something your family has been protecting for decades.””

I stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

Thomas suddenly spoke.

“Adrian.””

Everyone turned.

His voice was warning.

But Adrian ignored him.

“Your father never told you the complete story.””

My hands tightened.

“Stop.””

For once, Adrian listened.

But only because he enjoyed seeing me unsettled.

He walked toward the door.

“This meeting isn’t over.””

I watched him leave.

The second the door closed, I turned to Thomas.

“What did he mean?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

“Thomas.””

He looked exhausted.

“Your father made me promise never to tell you unless it became necessary.””

“And now?””

He opened his briefcase.

“I believe it has.””

Inside was a small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

My name was written across the front.

Not typed.

Handwritten.

My father’s handwriting.

I stared at it.

“He left this for you?””

Thomas nodded.

“Five years ago.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because he believed you would never need it.””

I touched the envelope.

“And now I do?””

Thomas looked toward the closed door Adrian had walked through.

“Yes.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

Only a few sentences.

But the first line made my entire body go cold.

*Claire, if you are reading this, it means Adrian Hawthorne has finally shown you who he really is.*

I stopped breathing.

I continued reading.

*There is something you must know about the man you married.*

My hands trembled.

Because my father had known.

Before I did.

Before the affair.

Before the betrayal.

Before the banquet.

He had known Adrian would betray me.

And then I reached the final sentence.

May you like

The one that changed everything.

*The company shares are not your greatest power. The greatest power is the secret Adrian has spent his entire life trying to hide.*
