Chapter 16: The Mother Who Challenged Me

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*Ownership challenge filed by: Evelyn Whitmore.*

My mother.

The woman who had spent fifteen years hiding from the world.

The woman who had just told me she sacrificed everything to protect me.

The woman standing ten feet away from me.

My hands tightened around the phone.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

My mother’s expression changed immediately.

“What happened?””

I turned the screen toward her.

Her face lost all color.

“I didn’t do this.””

The anger inside me rose.

“Your name is on it.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Thomas’s documents.

Then at Victor.

Then at Adrian.

Nobody spoke.

That silence told me something.

Everyone knew something I didn’t.

Again.

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

My mother stepped closer.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I backed away.

“Every person in my life has been making decisions behind my back.””

“That isn’t what this is.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

She looked broken.

“I don’t know.””

I believed that.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because if my own mother didn’t know, then someone was using her.

Someone had been moving pieces around this entire time.

Victor watched silently.

Too silently.

I turned toward him.

“You knew this would happen.””

His expression remained calm.

“I suspected.””

“Why?””

“Because someone has been trying to activate the final clause.””

“What clause?””

Victor looked at the agreement.

“The one your father created after your mother disappeared.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Another secret?””

He didn’t answer.

I grabbed the document.

“Enough.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“No more hidden clauses. No more promises. No more protecting me from the truth.””

Everyone became silent.

“I want every page.””

Thomas nodded.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I looked at all of them.

“Tonight, everyone tells me everything.””

Three hours later, we were sitting around the same table.

The same table where my father had once planned billion-dollar deals.

Now it held the broken pieces of my family.

Thomas spread the documents out.

“The final clause was created because your father feared a conflict between you and your mother.””

I looked at him.

“Why would he fear that?””

“Because your mother was legally listed as the secondary protector of the trust.””

I frowned.

“Secondary protector?””

“Yes.””

My mother spoke softly.

“Your father trusted me with the company.””

I looked at her.

“Then why challenge my ownership?””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t.””

Thomas examined the filing.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

He pointed at the signature.

“This isn’t your mother’s signature.””

I felt the tension change.

“What?””

He compared the document.

“Someone copied her identity.””

Victor’s expression changed for the first time.

A small crack in his confidence.

Adrian noticed too.

“You know who did this.””

Victor looked at him.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I watched him carefully.

“Victor.””

He looked at me.

“You have spent weeks trying to take control of my company.””

“I have.””

“But now someone else is doing the same thing.””

Silence.

“And you’re not surprised.””

Victor looked away.

That was enough.

Adrian stepped forward.

“It’s him.””

Everyone looked at Adrian.

“What?””

He pointed at Victor.

“The person behind this.””

Victor laughed.

“You think after everything, I’m the villain?””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“I know you are.””

The room went quiet.

Because Adrian and Victor had been allies.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

“What aren’t you telling me?”” I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

Then at Victor.

“He wasn’t trying to buy Hawthorne Industries.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

Adrian answered:

“He was trying to destroy the trust.””

Victor smiled slowly.

“And now you finally understand.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the security alarm began.

Thomas checked his phone.

His face changed.

“What?””

I asked.

He looked at me.

“The trust server has been accessed.””

“By who?””

He turned the screen around.

A name appeared.

My blood went cold.

*Evelyn Whitmore.*

Again.

My mother’s identity.

But this time, the system had accepted it.

May you like

And then a message appeared beneath it.

*Authorization confirmed.*
