Chapter 18: The Man Who Started Everything

The message remained on the screen.

A challenge.

A threat.

A trap.

Maybe all three.

Nobody spoke.

My father’s death had always been simple.

A heart attack.

That was what everyone told me.

That was what the doctors reported.

That was what I believed.

Now, after everything I had learned, even grief felt like something someone had arranged for me.

I looked at my mother.

“Did you know?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“No.””

“Did my father know?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

I turned.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“You knew Robert was alive.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The pain came instantly.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“How long?””

“Three years.””

Three years.

I laughed quietly.

“Three years, and you said nothing.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“You were trying to control everything.””

His expression changed.

Because he knew I was right.

“I thought if I exposed Robert too early, he would disappear.””

“And instead?””

“I lost you.””

The words were quiet.

Almost honest.

But honesty came too late.

The meeting with Robert was scheduled for the next morning.

Nobody wanted me to go.

Thomas called it dangerous.

My mother called it a mistake.

Adrian called it a trap.

But every single one of them had spent years making choices for me.

This time, I chose.

The location was an abandoned estate outside the city.

Once owned by the Whitmore family.

The place where everything began.

When I arrived, Robert was waiting.

He looked older than the photograph.

Smaller.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

“You look like your father.””

I didn’t sit.

“I don’t want compliments.””

He smiled.

“You have his anger.””

“You knew my father.””

“I knew him better than anyone.””

“You hated him.””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“I hated that he won.””

I stared at him.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“Your entire life is about losing.””

His smile disappeared slightly.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

He studied me.

“You think this is about money.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He looked toward the window.

“It’s about being forgotten.””

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

“My father died protecting me from you.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“Your father died because he made a choice.””

“What choice?””

He looked back at me.

“To protect you.””

The words sounded familiar.

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

Protection.

Sacrifice.

Secrets.

I was tired of those words.

“Tell me the truth.””

Robert sat down.

“Your father discovered I had been using Adrian.””

I froze.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“He knew before I married him?””

“Yes.””

My heart tightened.

“Then why didn’t he stop me?””

Robert smiled sadly.

“Because your father believed people could change.””

I thought of Adrian.

And hated that part of me still wondered if it was true.

“What happened the night my father died?””

Robert became serious.

“That night, he found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Adrian was never the real threat.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Robert leaned forward.

“The person controlling Adrian was someone else.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

Robert looked directly at me.

Then said:

“The person who has been beside you your entire life.””

The room went silent.

I felt my phone vibrate.

A message appeared.

From Thomas.

One sentence.

*Claire, don’t trust anyone. The person who betrayed your father is with you right now.*

I looked up at Robert.

Then back at the message.

Because suddenly, I realized something terrifying.

May you like

The enemy wasn’t coming for my family.

The enemy had always been inside it.
