Chapter 14: The Truth Behind Adrian’s Revenge

I stared at my mother.

The woman who had vanished.

The woman who had allowed me to mourn her.

The woman who now claimed the man who destroyed my marriage had been protecting us.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“No, that’s impossible.””

My mother sat at the kitchen table.

“I know how it looks.””

“He humiliated me.””

“Yes.””

“He cheated on me.””

“Yes.””

“He tried to take control of my company.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Then explain how that is protection.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because Adrian was playing a game.””

I laughed bitterly.

“A game?””

“Yes.””

“With who?””

She looked at me.

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Before she answered, a sound came from outside.

A car.

My mother immediately stood.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Claire, you need to leave.””

“What?””

“Now.””

I looked toward the window.

A black vehicle had stopped outside.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Listen to me. You cannot be here.””

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

We moved toward the back door.

Then a voice came from outside.

“Evelyn.””

My mother froze.

I recognized that voice.

Not from memory.

From the news.

From business reports.

From years of watching powerful men shake hands.

It was Victor Lang.

The investor Adrian had been working with.

The man trying to acquire Hawthorne Industries.

My mother looked at me.

“Run.””

But I didn’t.

Because I finally understood.

Everyone had been hiding the truth from me.

Everyone had been deciding what I could handle.

Not anymore.

The front door opened.

Victor walked inside.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Claire.””

I stared at him.

“You know who I am.””

“Of course.””

He looked around the house.

“I was wondering when you would finally find this place.””

My mother stepped between us.

“Leave.””

Victor smiled.

“Still protecting her?””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

He ignored me.

“You always were sentimental, Evelyn.””

My mother’s face hardened.

“And you were always greedy.””

Victor laughed.

“Greedy?””

He looked at me.

“I spent twenty years trying to recover what your family stole.””

I stepped forward.

“What did my family steal?””

Victor smiled.

“The truth.””

The answer made no sense.

Then Adrian walked into the house.

My entire body went still.

He looked exhausted.

Not like a CEO.

Not like the man from the banquet.

Just a man carrying too much.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

His silence confirmed it.

“You knew my mother was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew all of this.””

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“And you still destroyed me.””

His face changed.

“I was trying to force the truth into the open.””

“You could have told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was watching you.””

I laughed.

“Convenient.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Claire, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to ask for trust after everything.””

He stopped.

And for the first time, he looked hurt.

“I know.””

The honesty almost disarmed me.

Almost.

Victor interrupted.

“This family drama is touching.””

Everyone looked at him.

“But we’re forgetting why we’re here.””

He pulled out a folder.

My mother went pale.

“What is that?””

Victor smiled.

“The original agreement.””

My heart sank.

The document everyone wanted.

The one my father hid.

The one that started everything.

Victor opened it.

“Your father thought he could bury the truth forever.””

He looked at me.

“But he made one mistake.””

“What?””

May you like

Victor’s smile widened.

“He left the final decision to you.””
