Chapter 15: The Power My Father Left Me

The folder sat on the table.

Everyone looked at it.

My mother.

Adrian.

Victor.

And me.

For years, people had fought over this document.

Companies.

Families.

Legacies.

Yet somehow, it had ended up in my hands.

Victor opened the agreement.

“You should know what you own.””

I didn’t move.

“Why are you showing me this?””

“Because once you understand, you’ll know why Adrian married you.””

My eyes moved to Adrian.

He looked away.

That hurt more than if he had defended himself.

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.””

Finally, he spoke.

“At first, yes.””

The words felt like a blade.

“At first.””

I swallowed.

“And later?””

His voice was quiet.

“Later, it changed.””

I looked away.

I didn’t know whether that was better or worse.

Victor tapped the document.

“The agreement created a trust.””

I looked at him.

“What kind of trust?””

“A protective trust.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Victor, stop.””

“No.””

He smiled.

“Claire deserves the truth.””

I hated that he was right.

“The trust was created because your great-grandfather discovered someone would eventually try to destroy both families.””

“Who?””

Victor smiled.

“Your uncle.””

Robert.

Again.

The ghost that had controlled everyone’s lives.

“Robert wanted complete control.””

Victor continued.

“He manipulated Charles Hawthorne. He manipulated Adrian.””

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I found out years ago.””

“And you used me anyway.””

His eyes closed briefly.

“Yes.””

The answer was painful because it was honest.

Victor continued.

“Robert’s plan failed because your father discovered the truth.””

My mother spoke quietly.

“And because I helped him.””

I turned.

“You?””

She nodded.

“I was the one who found Robert’s financial crimes.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because Robert threatened you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me if I exposed him, he would destroy your future.””

My mother looked at me.

“You were sixteen.””

I remembered.

The night she disappeared.

The police.

The explanations.

The funeral.

Except there was never a body.

“He made you leave.””

“Yes.””

“And my father knew.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Adrian.

“And you?””

He nodded.

“I found out when I was older.””

“Then why become like him?””

His expression broke.

“Because I spent my whole life trying to prove I wasn’t him.””

The room became quiet.

For a moment, I saw something different.

Not the CEO.

Not the betrayer.

A man who had spent years trapped by someone else’s choices.

But then I remembered the banquet.

The kiss.

The humiliation.

Pain did not erase responsibility.

Victor closed the folder.

“The trust gives you control over more than Hawthorne Industries.””

I looked at him.

“What else?””

He smiled.

“Every asset your family built.””

My expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because your father believed the person who inherited power needed to understand sacrifice before using it.””

I laughed softly.

“So he left me a test.””

“Yes.””

“And what happens if I fail?””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“Then the trust transfers everything.””

“To whom?””

Silence.

Then my mother answered.

“Adrian.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Victor nodded.

“Your father believed Adrian could either become the person who destroyed everything…”

He looked at Adrian.

“…or the person who saved it.””

I stared at the document.

The ultimate choice.

Everything my father built.

Everything Adrian wanted.

Everything I had fought to protect.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from my attorney.

I opened it.

The words made my blood run cold.

*Emergency update: The board has discovered someone filed a claim challenging your ownership rights.*

Below was the name of the person who filed it.

Not Victor.

Not Adrian.

Not Robert.

May you like

Someone I never expected.

My mother.
