Chapter 19: The Final Betrayal

I stared at Thomas’s message.

*Don’t trust anyone. The person who betrayed your father is with you right now.*

The words felt heavier than anything Robert had said.

Because Robert had spent his entire life manipulating people.

But Thomas?

Thomas was different.

Thomas was the man my father trusted.

The man who raised me in the business world.

The man who knew every secret my family buried.

And now he was warning me about someone close.

I looked around the abandoned estate.

Robert sat across from me, watching my reaction.

“You received a message.””

I didn’t answer.

His eyes narrowed.

“From Thomas.””

My body went still.

“How do you know that?””

Robert smiled.

“Because Thomas has always been predictable.””

The air changed.

I slowly lowered my phone.

“What does that mean?””

Robert leaned back.

“It means you’re finally asking the right questions.””

I hated that he sounded almost relieved.

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I expect you to investigate.””

That was the difference.

The people I trusted gave me instructions.

Robert gave me information.

And somehow, that scared me more.

“What did Thomas do?””

Robert looked toward the old fireplace.

“Your father trusted the wrong person.””

“Thomas?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Someone Thomas trusted.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Explain.””

Robert folded his hands.

“Fifteen years ago, your father discovered that someone inside the family office was leaking information.””

“Lydia?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Robert looked directly at me.

“Your mother.””

I stood immediately.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

My anger rose.

“You already told me my mother was involved.””

“Yes.””

“But she helped my father.””

“She did.””

Robert’s expression became complicated.

“Your mother made mistakes. But she wasn’t the person who betrayed him.””

“Then who was?””

Robert looked at my phone.

“The person who controlled the evidence.””

I felt a chill.

Evidence.

Documents.

Access codes.

Files.

Everything.

One person kept appearing in every story.

The person who knew where everything was.

The person who always had the answer.

Thomas.

When I returned to the city, I didn’t tell anyone where I had been.

Not my mother.

Not Adrian.

Not Thomas.

For the first time in years, I kept a secret.

And I understood why everyone else had done the same.

Secrets felt powerful.

Until they destroyed you.

I went directly to the family office.

Thomas was waiting.

“You went alone.””

It wasn’t a question.

I placed my bag down.

“Yes.””

His expression tightened.

“Claire, that was dangerous.””

I watched him carefully.

“You sound worried.””

“I am.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“Or about what I found?””

The silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

Thomas looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

“You know something.””

“No.””

“Thomas.””

He closed his eyes.

“Claire…”

I walked closer.

“My father trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“He trusted you with everything.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does every secret lead back to you?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

He looked at me.

“Because it’s true.””

“Then prove it.””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened his briefcase.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name.

Again.

My father’s handwriting.

I stared.

“How many letters did he leave?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Three.””

“You gave me one.””

“Yes.””

“And the others?””

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

“For you to be ready.””

I took the envelope.

Opened it.

The letter was shorter.

*Claire,*

*If Thomas gives you this letter, it means I failed to protect you from the final truth.*

My heartbeat increased.

*Thomas was never the betrayal. He was the shield.*

I looked up.

Thomas closed his eyes.

The letter continued.

*The person who betrayed me was someone I loved more than anyone. Someone who had access to my heart before they ever had access to my company.*

My hands trembled.

Not because I didn’t understand.

Because I did.

The final line appeared.

*Your mother was protecting you from the truth about herself. But the person who destroyed our family was not your mother. It was someone she trusted.*

I looked at Thomas.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Adrian.

*Claire. I know who did it. Meet me before it’s too late.*

I found Adrian at the old Hawthorne estate.

The place where our families had celebrated victories.

The place where we announced our marriage.

Now it felt like a museum of lies.

Adrian stood outside.

When he saw me, he looked relieved.

“You came.””

“I almost didn’t.””

“I know.””

I studied him.

“Tell me.””

He took a deep breath.

“The person who betrayed your father was…”

He stopped.

I waited.

Then he said:

“Eleanor.””

His mother.

I froze.

“My mother-in-law?””

He nodded.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

Everything suddenly shifted.

The diamonds.

The arrogance.

The way she always acted like she owned the world.

But why?

“Why?””

Adrian looked broken.

“Because she knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That my grandfather destroyed his own family.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“And she helped him cover it.””
