Chapter 9: The Truth About My Father
I read Daniel’s message three times.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I did.
And I was terrified that I understood them too well.
*Ask Mark why he never told you who your biological father really was.*
My hands went numb.
I looked at Mark.
The man who raised me.
The man who held my hand when I was sick.
The man who taught me how to drive.
The man I had just spent hours wondering if I could trust.
“Say something.””
Mark didn’t move.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice was quieter than I expected.
“That’s the problem.””
I held up my phone.
“You always start with my name. You always look sad. You always say you’re sorry.””
I stepped closer.
“But you never answer.””
Mark looked down.
Ryan moved beside me.
“Mark, she deserves the truth.””
Mark nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
He sat down.
And for the first time in my life, I saw him look afraid of me.
Not because I was angry.
Because he knew I had the right to be.
“Your biological father is Daniel Hayes.””
I stared at him.
“That’s what I already know.””
Mark shook his head.
“No.””
My heart sank.
“No?””
He looked at the floor.
“Daniel is your biological father.””
A pause.
“But he was never your legal father.””
The room went completely silent.
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Mark took a deep breath.
“When your mother was pregnant with you, she found out something about Daniel.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
“He wasn’t who she thought he was.””
My mind raced.
“Then why did she marry him?””
“Because she loved him.””
Mark looked sad.
“And because she believed people could change.””
I thought about Daniel walking into my bakery.
The apology.
The tears.
The promises.
“He changed his name,” Mark continued.
“What?””
“Daniel wasn’t born Daniel Hayes.””
My stomach tightened.
“What was his real name?””
Mark hesitated.
Then he said it.
And I felt like the room tilted.
“Daniel Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Until Mark opened the folder again.
He pulled out an old newspaper clipping.
I looked at the headline.
*WHITMORE FAMILY HEIR ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD*
My breath caught.
“This is impossible.””
Mark shook his head.
“It’s why your mother left him.””
I looked at the article.
The picture was younger.
But I recognized the face.
Daniel.
My father.
The man who had stood beside me in my wedding photos.
“He lied about everything?””
Mark nodded.
“Almost everything.””
“Why didn’t my mother tell me?””
“Because she wanted you to have a normal childhood.””
I laughed softly.
“A normal childhood?””
My voice broke.
“I spent years wondering why my father left.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“But there’s more.””
Of course there was.
I almost couldn’t feel shocked anymore.
“What?””
Mark looked at me.
“Daniel wasn’t just after your inheritance.””
I waited.
“He was trying to use your identity.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“When your mother created the trust, she added a condition.””
“What condition?””
Mark pushed another document toward me.
I read it.
Slowly.
Then faster.
My hands began shaking.
The trust wasn’t just money.
It was ownership.
Shares.
Voting rights.
A controlling position in the company my grandfather built.
I looked at Mark.
“Daniel wanted my inheritance because it gave him control.””
“Yes.””
“He needed me.””
“Yes.””
“And the wedding?””
Mark’s face hardened.
“That was his public return.””
I remembered Daniel’s words.
I came back because your mother left money in your name.
Not because he missed me.
Not because he loved me.
Because I was an opportunity.
A door back into a world he lost.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
From Daniel.
This time, a voice recording.
I pressed play.
His voice filled the room.
“Emma, I know Mark has been telling you lies.””
I looked at Mark.
Daniel continued.
“But there’s one thing he hasn’t told you.””
A pause.
“Your mother didn’t die naturally.””
My blood turned cold.
Ryan grabbed my hand.
The recording continued.
“She was murdered.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s voice became softer.
“And Mark knows who did it.””
The recording ended.
I stared at Mark.
He didn’t look surprised.
That was the worst part.
“Is it true?””
Mark didn’t answer.
My voice broke.
“Mark.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“Who?””
His eyes filled with tears.
And then he said the name I never expected.
“The person who killed your mother…”
He swallowed.
“Was the person who raised Daniel.””
I froze.
“His father?””
May you like
Mark nodded.
“And Daniel has known for twenty years.””
