Chapter 6: The Father Who Needed Forgiveness

The garden lights flickered above us.

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

“You recorded it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than if he had lied.

Mark stepped forward.

“Emma, don’t give him anything else.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Still protecting her?””

Mark’s eyes hardened.

“No. Protecting her from you.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You really believe you’re the good guy.””

“I don’t need to believe it.””

Mark pointed toward me.

“She knows.””

I looked between them.

But did I?

That was the problem.

I didn’t know anything anymore.

I walked back inside the reception hall.

The party had completely stopped.

Guests stood in small groups, whispering.

My wedding photographer lowered his camera.

The cake sat untouched.

A perfect white cake collapsing under the weight of an imperfect night.

Ryan followed me.

“Emma.””

I turned.

“I need to know the truth.””

He nodded.

“Then find it.””

I looked at him.

“You’re not going to tell me what to believe?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Because I’m not marrying your family history.””

His words surprised me.

“I’m marrying you.””

For the first time all night, I felt like someone was standing beside me instead of pulling me in different directions.

I looked at my phone again.

The video.

The password.

“What could the password be?””

Mark entered the room behind me.

He had heard.

“Your mother used one phrase for everything.””

I looked at him.

“What phrase?””

He hesitated.

Then quietly said:

“Forever my little girl.””

My heart stopped.

That was what my mother used to say.

Every night.

Before bed.

I typed it.

The video unlocked.

Everyone nearby became silent.

My mother appeared again.

This time, closer.

Like she had recorded the message specifically for me.

“Emma.””

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice after all these years hurt more than I expected.

“If you are watching this, then Daniel has come back.””

She took a deep breath.

“I’m sorry.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“My biggest mistake was believing I could protect you by keeping secrets.””

I looked at Mark.

He looked devastated.

My mother continued.

“Mark did not steal your inheritance.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“He protected it.””

The room went silent.

My eyes moved to Mark.

My mother continued.

“When Daniel found out about the trust, he tried to convince me to give him control.””

She paused.

“I refused.””

Daniel whispered, “That’s not true.””

Nobody listened.

“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, he would disappear and make sure Emma hated him forever.””

My hands shook.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, if you are showing her this message, then you have probably already convinced her that Mark betrayed her.””

Daniel stepped back.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

My mother continued.

“But Emma needs to know something.””

The screen flickered.

Then her final words appeared.

“Mark wasn’t hiding the inheritance from you.””

A pause.

“He was hiding the reason you inherited it.””

My heart pounded.

“What reason?”” I whispered.

The video continued.

My mother looked down.

“Your inheritance was not created by me.””

Everyone froze.

“It came from Daniel’s family.””

Daniel’s expression changed completely.

My mother’s voice became softer.

“And Daniel has spent twenty years trying to make sure Emma never learns why.””

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel spoke.

Quietly.

“You should have never seen that.””

I turned toward him.

“What are you hiding?””

He looked at me.

Not with guilt.

With fear.

And that was when I realized something terrifying.

The money was never the secret.

May you like

The secret was why my mother wanted me to have it.

And Daniel had spent twenty years running from the truth.
