Chapter 4: The Man Who Stayed

I stared at the photo until the screen went dark.

A picture could destroy a person faster than the truth ever could.

Because people believed what they saw.

They didn’t ask what happened before.

They didn’t ask what happened after.

They just judged.

And suddenly, I was looking at an image of Mark walking out of a bank, and the man I trusted most in the world looked like a stranger.

“Who sent that?”” Mark asked.

I looked up.

His face changed when he saw my expression.

“Emma?””

I turned the phone toward him.

The color drained from his face.

“That’s impossible.””

My voice was quiet.

“Why?””

“Because that photo was taken years ago.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He looked away.

Again.

That movement hurt.

“You keep doing that,” I whispered.

“Doing what?””

“Looking away every time I ask about the truth.””

Mark closed his eyes.

“I’m trying to find the right way to explain.””

“There is no right way.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent my whole life defending you. I told people you were my father when they asked. I told everyone you were the man who saved me.””

He looked at me.

“You were my daughter.””

“Then why didn’t you trust me with the truth?””

The silence between us felt endless.

Finally, Mark spoke.

“Because your mother asked me not to.””

I shook my head.

“Stop saying that.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“Stop making it sound like you had no choice.””

I stood.

“You made choices too.””

Mark looked like I had physically hurt him.

Maybe I had.

But I was hurting too.

The wedding dress that had felt magical earlier now felt like a costume.

A costume worn by someone who thought she knew her own family.

The garden door opened.

Daniel stepped outside.

Of course he did.

He had been waiting.

“You see?”” he said.

I turned sharply.

“What are you doing here?””

He ignored the question.

“This is what Mark does. He makes you feel guilty for asking questions.””

Mark stepped between us.

“Leave.””

Daniel laughed.

“You still think you can protect her.””

“You’re not her father.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“I am.””

“No,” Mark replied.

His voice was calm.

“You’re the man whose DNA matches hers.””

The words landed heavily.

Daniel’s face darkened.

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

“You better be careful.””

Mark didn’t move.

“Or what?””

Daniel stared at him.

Then he looked at me.

“Ask him about the money.””

My stomach tightened.

“What money?””

Daniel smiled.

“The money he took before your mother died.””

Mark’s face changed.

I saw it.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

“What is he talking about?””

Mark looked at me.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I need answers.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Your mother had life insurance too.””

I felt sick.

“How much?””

“Five hundred thousand dollars.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“And?””

Daniel looked directly at Mark.

“And your stepfather was the only person who had access.””

I stared at Mark.

“Did you take it?””

The question came out barely above a whisper.

Mark looked devastated.

“No.””

Daniel immediately laughed.

“Of course he says no.””

Mark turned toward him.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out another envelope.

This one had my name written on it.

Not typed.

Written.

My mother’s handwriting.

My breath caught.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel smiled.

“Your mother gave it to me before she died.””

Mark froze.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Mark took a step forward.

“No, she never would have.””

“She did.””

Daniel handed me the envelope.

“Open it.””

I stared at it.

Every instinct told me not to.

But I opened it anyway.

Inside was another letter.

Only three sentences.

My mother’s handwriting.

*Emma,*

*If Daniel ever gives you this letter, do not believe anything he says.*

*He is the reason I lost everything.*

I looked up.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

And for the first time that night, he looked afraid.

I turned back to the letter.

There was one final line.

A line that made my entire body go cold.

*The person who betrayed me was not Mark. It was someone much closer.*

I slowly raised my eyes.

May you like

Because there was only one person my mother could have meant.

And he was standing right in front of me.
