Chapter 3: The Letter My Mother Hid

The room was so quiet I could hear the tiny crackle of the paper inside Daniel’s hand.

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to believe Mark.

But more than anything, I wanted to believe my own memories.

Because if Mark had betrayed me, then the foundation of my entire life had been built on a lie.

Daniel held up the photograph of the document.

“Your mother knew the truth,” he said.

“She knew Mark was keeping secrets from you.””

“Give me that,” Mark said.

For the first time all night, panic broke through his calm.

Daniel pulled the phone back.

“No.””

“Emma deserves to see it.””

“Exactly,” Daniel replied.

“She deserves to know who you really are.””

I looked at Mark.

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation hurt worse than any confession.

“Mark,” I whispered.

He looked at me, his eyes full of regret.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

My chest tightened.

“Find out what?””

He looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the decorations.

At the wedding cake with our names written across it.

Then he looked back at me.

“I need to talk to you privately.””

A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.

“Privately?””

I held up the invoice from Daniel.

“My biological father just charged me seventy-eight thousand dollars for pretending to be my dad, and now you’re telling me the truth needs privacy?””

Mark flinched.

Because he knew he deserved that.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don’t let him manipulate you again.””

Mark’s face turned cold.

“You don’t get to use her pain after abandoning her for twenty years.””

Daniel smiled.

“You still think you’re the hero.””

“No,” Mark said quietly.

“I think I’m the man who stayed.””

That sentence hit me harder than I expected.

Because it was true.

He was the man who stayed.

But staying didn’t mean he couldn’t have lied.

I turned away from both of them.

“I need air.””

I walked through the crowd of confused guests before anyone could stop me.

Outside, the cold night air hit my face.

The wedding venue’s garden was decorated with white roses and small lights hanging from the trees.

Everything looked beautiful.

Almost cruelly beautiful.

I sat on a stone bench and stared at my hands.

Hands that had signed marriage papers hours earlier.

Hands that had held my father’s arm as I walked down the aisle.

Hands that now couldn’t stop shaking.

A few minutes later, Ryan found me.

He didn’t speak at first.

He just sat beside me.

That was one of the reasons I loved him.

He never rushed into my emotions.

“Are you okay?”” he finally asked.

I almost laughed.

“Do I look okay?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

I looked at him.

“Everyone thinks they know my family story.””

Ryan nodded.

“But you don’t.””

I looked down.

“No. Apparently I don’t.””

He took my hand.

“Emma, whatever happened, we’ll figure it out.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“I replaced the man who raised me with someone who sent me a bill.””

Ryan’s expression tightened.

“Your biological father is not acting like a father.””

“I know.””

“And Mark?””

I closed my eyes.

“I don’t know anymore.””

Before Ryan could answer, the garden door opened.

Mark stepped outside.

He looked older than he had an hour ago.

Like the weight of the secret had finally caught up with him.

“Emma,” he said softly.

Ryan stood.

But I touched his arm.

“It’s okay.””

Ryan nodded and walked a few steps away, giving us space.

Mark sat across from me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Not like Daniel’s.

This one was old.

Worn.

The edges were faded.

“Your mother wrote this,” he said.

My heart stopped.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She made me promise I wouldn’t give it to you unless Daniel came back.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why would she make that promise?””

Mark looked toward the wedding hall.

“Because she knew he would come back one day.””

I slowly took it.

“What does it say?””

Mark’s voice broke.

“She wanted you to know why.””

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

The ink had faded.

But I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My mother’s.

My eyes filled before I even read the first line.

*My sweet Emma,*

*If you are reading this, it means Daniel has found you again.*

I stopped breathing.

The garden suddenly felt too quiet.

I continued.

*I need you to understand something. Your father did not leave because he stopped loving you. He left because he discovered something that could have destroyed all of us.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

I looked at Mark.

He looked away.

I kept reading.

*Mark is going to hate me for writing this, but he deserves the truth too. The money I left you was never about making you rich. It was protection.*

My heart raced.

Protection from what?

The next sentence made my blood run cold.

*Daniel did not come back because he missed you. He came back because he knows what you inherited.*

I looked up.

Mark’s face had gone pale.

Because he knew the next words.

And I knew I needed to hear them.

I lowered my eyes back to the page.

*Emma, if Daniel tells you Mark stole from you, ask him one question:*

*Why did he disappear the same week the trust was created?*

I froze.

The same week?

I looked at Mark.

“Why didn’t you tell me this?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

He swallowed.

“That you would hate me when you learned the rest.””

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One photo.

One sentence.

The photo showed Mark leaving a bank.

May you like

And beneath it:

*Your stepfather isn’t the man you think he is.*
