Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile
I spent my entire childhood believing Mark Carter was the safest person in the world.
That night, watching him stand silently while strangers stared at him, I wondered if I had ever truly known him.
The wedding band continued playing softly in the background, but nobody was dancing anymore.
The room felt like a courtroom.
Daniel stood in the center of it all, enjoying every second.
He raised his glass.
“I didn't want to ruin my daughter's wedding,” he announced.
Nobody believed him.
Not even him.
“Then why are you doing this?”” Ryan asked.
Daniel looked at my husband and smiled.
“Because secrets destroy families. I'm simply bringing the truth into the light.””
I stared at Mark.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Mark swallowed.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Tell me.””
Mark’s hands trembled slightly.
I had never seen that before.
Not when my mother left.
Not when we lost our house.
Not when he worked two jobs just to keep me in the school I loved.
Never.
“Your father is twisting things,” Mark said.
Daniel laughed.
“There it is.””
He walked closer.
“The man who stole your inheritance is still pretending to be your hero.””
“Stop,” Mark said.
It was the first time I had heard anger in his voice.
Daniel’s smile widened.
“Oh, now you’re angry?””
Guests whispered around us.
My aunt covered her mouth.
My cousin pulled out her phone before my mother’s sister slapped her hand down.
“This is a family matter,” my aunt whispered.
But it wasn't just family anymore.
It was my wedding.
My life.
My past.
All of it was collapsing in front of people who came to celebrate me.
I turned to Mark.
“What inheritance?””
He closed his eyes for a second.
That was enough.
A horrible, sinking feeling settled in my chest.
“You knew.””
“Emma, listen to me.””
“You knew.””
He stepped toward me.
“I knew there was something your mother left behind.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“There you go. Finally admitting it.””
Mark looked at him with disgust.
“You don't get to pretend you care about her.””
Daniel smiled coldly.
“I’m her father.””
Mark’s jaw tightened.
“You abandoned her.””
The room went silent again.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The anger behind the smile.
“You don't know what happened.””
“I know enough,” Mark replied.
I looked between them.
“Someone explain this to me.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was worse than any answer.
Finally, Mark sat down.
Not because he was calm.
Because he looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying something heavy for years.
“Emma,” he said quietly, “your mother set up a trust before she died.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
He nodded.
“She wanted to make sure you were protected.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She left two million dollars.””
The words spread through the room like a shockwave.
Two million.
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because my brain couldn't process it.
“My mother left me two million dollars?””
Mark looked down.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
The anger came before the pain.
“Protecting me?””
My voice rose.
“From what?””
Mark looked at Daniel.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
“From him.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“There it is. The excuse.””
Mark stood.
“You came back because you found out about the trust.””
Daniel smiled.
“You can't prove that.””
“I don't have to.””
Daniel stepped closer to him.
“You think she’ll believe you? After all these years?””
Mark looked at me.
That hurt more than anything.
Because he looked like a man preparing to lose everything.
“Emma,” he whispered, “I should have told you sooner.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn’t you?””
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
The entire room waited.
Even Daniel stopped smiling.
Finally, Mark said something so quietly I almost missed it.
“Because your mother made me promise never to let Daniel near that money.””
A chill ran through me.
I looked at Daniel.
His confident expression disappeared.
Only for a moment.
But it was enough.
“Why?”” I asked.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Because your mother was angry when she died.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He stepped closer.
“You really want the truth, Emma?””
I didn’t respond.
He pulled out his phone.
“I have proof.””
My heart pounded.
“What proof?””
Daniel unlocked the screen and turned it toward the room.
A photograph appeared.
An old document.
My mother’s signature.
And beneath it, a sentence that made my entire body go cold.
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Your mother didn't leave Mark in charge of your inheritance because she trusted him.””
He paused.
“She left him in charge because she knew what he did to your real father.””
I stared at the document.
Then at Mark.
May you like
And Mark’s face told me one thing.
He knew exactly what was coming next.
