Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Inheritance
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not Mark.
Not me.
The letter shook between my fingers as I read the final sentence again.
*The person who betrayed me was not Mark. It was someone much closer.*
My eyes slowly lifted toward Daniel.
His confident expression was gone.
The charming father who had walked into my bakery months ago was nowhere to be seen.
Standing in front of me was a man who looked caught.
“You knew about this letter,” I whispered.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I noticed.
Mark noticed too.
“Emma,” Mark said quietly, “listen to me.””
I turned toward him.
“No.””
The word surprised even me.
“I’ve spent my entire life listening to everyone else explain what happened.””
My voice trembled.
“My mother. My father. You.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Everyone has a story.””
Then back at Mark.
“But nobody ever asked me what I wanted to know.””
Mark lowered his head.
“You’re right.””
That admission hurt.
Because I wanted him to fight.
I wanted him to say I was wrong.
Instead, he looked broken.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Emma, don’t let him distract you.””
I looked at him.
“You were the one who brought up the inheritance.””
“Yes.””
“You were the one who accused Mark.””
“Yes.””
“And now my mother’s letter says someone else betrayed her.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Your mother was sick. She was confused.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“Don’t talk about her like she didn’t know what she was doing.””
For the first time, Daniel looked at me differently.
Not like a daughter.
Like someone who had become inconvenient.
Mark noticed.
And his expression changed.
“Emma,” he said softly.
I turned.
“What?””
“There’s something else you need to know.””
My stomach dropped.
I almost laughed.
“Of course there is.””
Mark took a deep breath.
“Your mother didn’t just leave you money.””
He glanced at Daniel.
“She left you evidence.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?””
Mark looked at me.
“She knew Daniel would come back someday.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She expected this?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Mark hesitated.
“Because before she died, she discovered he had been watching her accounts.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“That’s a lie.””
Mark ignored him.
“She found transfers. Withdrawals. Money disappearing.””
I stared at Daniel.
The man who had sent me an invoice for my own wedding.
The man who claimed he wanted another chance.
“You stole from her?””
Daniel laughed.
It was a strange sound.
Almost desperate.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Mark looked at me.
“Your mother wanted to report him.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.””
“Yes, I do.””
Mark’s voice became stronger.
“Because I was there.””
The garden became silent.
“You were there?”” I asked.
Mark nodded.
“The night your mother found everything, she called me.””
I felt tears forming.
“My mother called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why not me?””
Mark’s expression broke.
“Because you were six years old.””
That sentence hit me.
Six.
I had forgotten how young I was.
How much of my childhood I remembered only in pieces.
Mark continued.
“She told me Daniel had been taking money from their joint accounts. She said she was scared.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Mark looked at him.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect Emma.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that why you left?””
His face went pale.
“No.””
“Then why?””
The question had haunted me for twenty years.
Why did my father disappear?
Why did he abandon a little girl who waited for him?
Daniel looked away.
And that told me everything.
“I was trying to fix things,” he finally said.
Mark laughed bitterly.
“You ran.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You weren’t there.””
Mark’s voice dropped.
“You weren’t either.””
The words were so simple.
But they destroyed Daniel’s argument.
My hands tightened around my mother’s letter.
All these years, I had imagined my father leaving because he didn’t love me.
Because I wasn’t enough.
Because I wasn’t worth staying for.
But now I was standing between two men who claimed to have protected me.
And I didn’t know who to believe.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, from the same unknown number.
A video file.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my mother.
Older than I remembered.
Tired.
Sitting at a kitchen table.
My breath stopped.
It was her voice.
“Emma, if you’re seeing this, it means Daniel found you.””
I looked at Mark.
He went completely still.
My mother continued.
“And it means he told you about the money.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Sweetheart, there is something Mark never told you.””
The video paused.
A loading circle appeared.
Then one final line appeared beneath it.
*Video continues after password verification.*
I stared at the screen.
“Password?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“She never showed you that part, did she?””
I looked up.
“How do you know?””
May you like
His face turned cold.
“Because I was the one who recorded it.””
