Chapter 8: The Stranger Who Knew Her Mother

Michael opened the front door but kept one hand against its edge.

A man in his late forties stood on the porch. He had medium-brown skin, closely cropped hair, and a weathered face that suggested years of worry rather than age. He wore a charcoal coat over a pale-blue shirt and held a thick document envelope beneath one arm.

His eyes moved past Michael.

Then they found Emily.

He stopped breathing for a moment.

“Oh, Lord,” he whispered.

Emily took a step backward.

“Who are you?””

The man swallowed.

“My name is Marcus Bell.””

Michael's grip tightened on the door.

“You said you have something that belongs to me.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I said I have something that belongs to Emily.””

Michael stepped onto the porch, partly blocking the doorway.

“You're going to explain yourself before you come any farther.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“That's fair.””

From the hallway, Vanessa's voice cut through the silence.

“Michael, don't let him in!””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, he looked exhausted.

“She still hasn't told you,” he said.

Michael's expression hardened.

“Told me what?””

Marcus looked directly at him.

“What happened the night your wife died.””

Emily went still.

Her mother's death had been a subject her father rarely discussed. She knew there had been an accident on a rain-soaked highway outside Atlanta. She knew her father had arrived at the hospital too late to say goodbye. She knew he had spent months afterward moving through the house like a man who had forgotten how to live.

She had never been told there was anything more to the story.

“My mother died in a car accident,” Emily said.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“That is what the report says.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Are you suggesting something else?””

“I'm saying there are things in that report that were never fully investigated.””

“That's a serious accusation.””

“I know.””

Marcus held out the envelope.

“That's why I brought the records.””

Michael didn't take it.

“Why now?””

“Because someone sent me a photograph of Vanessa and Darius together. I realized she was moving again, and I knew the trust would be in danger.””

Michael stared at him.

“Who sent you the photograph?””

“I don't know. It arrived anonymously.””

Emily lifted her phone.

“Was it you who sent me the messages?””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“No.””

“Then how did you know I was involved?””

“I didn't. I only knew that Vanessa had taken money from the estate, and that someone was trying to make sure the truth came out.””

Michael finally accepted the envelope.

He opened it on the hallway table.

Inside were bank statements, photocopies of legal documents, and several letters written by Emily's mother. The handwriting on the envelopes was familiar to Michael. He had seen it on birthday cards, grocery lists, and notes his wife used to leave beside his coffee.

He touched one letter with his thumb.

“Where did you get these?””

“My sister gave them to me before she died.””

Michael looked up sharply.

“Your sister?””

Marcus's face crumpled.

“Emily's mother was my younger sister. Her name was Denise.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“You're really her brother?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't I know you existed?””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

“Because your mother believed keeping me away would keep you safe.””

Michael's voice dropped.

“Safe from whom?””

Marcus glanced toward Vanessa.

She stood at the far end of the hallway, her arms wrapped around herself.

“From people who wanted control of the trust,” Marcus said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That's a lie.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Then explain the transfer.””

“You don't know what you're talking about!””

“I know that eighty-five thousand dollars left Emily's trust. I know it went through a company connected to Darius. And I know the money was supposed to remain untouched until Emily turned twenty-five.””

Emily stared at him.

“I'm twenty-five now.””

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

Michael looked at the documents again.

“Why would anyone hide the trust from her?””

“Because the original agreement named two beneficiaries. Emily was one. The other was someone Denise wanted to protect.””

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

“I don't know the full answer. Denise never told me the name directly. She said that if anything happened to her, I was to make sure Emily received the sealed statement on her twenty-fifth birthday.””

Emily looked at the date on the document.

“That's this year.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you contact me on my birthday?””

Marcus lowered his head.

“I tried.””

He pulled a folded letter from his coat.

“I sent this to the address Denise gave me. It came back unopened. I tried calling the number listed in the trust, but it had been disconnected. When I contacted the estate administrator, I was told the trust had already been reviewed and no further action was necessary.””

Michael's face darkened.

“Who told you that?””

Marcus handed him another document.

The letter bore the signature of the law firm that had managed the trust.

Michael recognized the name.

It was the same firm whose logo appeared on the folder in the photograph.

He looked toward Vanessa.

“You told me the estate had been settled years ago.””

“It had been!””

“Then why is there an active trust?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Because I was trying to protect you from something Denise did.””

Michael stared at her.

“You keep saying that. Protect me from what?””

She looked at Marcus.

He looked back at her.

Then he said something that made the hallway feel suddenly colder.

“Tell him what happened to the original birth certificate, Vanessa.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Emily's heart began pounding.

“What birth certificate?””

Marcus opened the envelope again and removed a photocopy of a document.

He placed it on the table.

The heading read *CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH*.

The child's name had been partially obscured, but the date of birth was visible.

It matched Emily's birthday.

The mother's name was Denise Reed.

The father's name, however, was not Michael Reed.

Emily stared at the paper.

Her entire body seemed to go numb.

“Dad?””

Michael looked at the document, then at his daughter.

“I don't understand.””

Marcus's voice softened.

“Your mother loved you more than anything in this world, Emily. Whatever that document says, it doesn't change that.””

Emily backed away from the table.

“Why isn't Dad's name on it?””

No one answered.

She looked at Michael, desperate for him to tell her the document was a mistake.

He reached for her, but she moved away.

“Emily, sweetheart—”

“Tell me it's wrong.””

Michael's face crumpled.

“I don't know.””

The words were honest.

And they broke her heart.

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't want this to happen.””

Emily turned toward her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“I didn't know the whole truth!””

Marcus looked at her with open contempt.

“You knew enough to steal from the trust.””

Michael's head snapped toward him.

“What does the money have to do with Emily's father?””

Marcus took a long breath.

“The original trust includes a sealed statement from Denise. It explains why she created the second beneficiary account and why Emily's paternity was never corrected on the public record.””

He looked at Michael.

“I believe the answer is in that statement.””

Michael gripped the edge of the table.

“Where is it?””

Marcus's gaze shifted toward Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa stopped crying.

For a moment, she looked as though she might deny it.

Then her eyes moved to the home office.

“The original document isn't in the house,” she whispered.

Michael stared at her.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Darius has it.””

Emily's phone vibrated once more.

The unknown number had sent a final message.

*Don't trust Marcus. Ask him why he waited twenty-five years to tell you the truth.*

Emily looked at her uncle.

His face changed when he saw the message.

Not with anger.

May you like

With recognition.

And for the first time, Emily wondered whether the stranger who had come to help her was hiding something just as dangerous as Vanessa.
