Chapter 5: The Phone That Could Destroy Her
Emily's fingers tightened around Michael's hand.
“Dad, I saw something on Vanessa's phone earlier,” she said.
“Something she didn't want me to see.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“She's lying.””
Michael didn't look at her.
“Let Emily finish.””
“Michael, you don't understand how she gets when she's upset. She sees things that aren't there, and then she—”
“Vanessa.””
He said her name quietly.
She stopped talking, but the anger in her eyes sharpened.
Emily swallowed.
“This afternoon, I was in the kitchen. Vanessa left her phone on the counter while she went upstairs. It kept lighting up with messages, and I saw Darius's name.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
“That is a private matter.””
Emily continued.
“The messages said he couldn't wait to see her. Then another one came through, and it said something about tonight being the last time they needed to hide.””
Michael stared at his wife.
“Last time?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“You're taking this out of context.””
Emily's voice trembled.
“I wasn't trying to read her messages. I just saw them. Then Vanessa came downstairs, grabbed her phone, and accused me of going through her things.””
“You did go through my things!”” Vanessa snapped.
“I didn't!””
“You've always been jealous of my relationship with your father!””
Michael's expression hardened.
“Stop blaming her for what I saw with my own eyes.””
Vanessa fell silent.
Emily wiped her cheek with the sleeve of her sweatshirt.
“Then Vanessa told me to pack my things. I said I wanted to wait until you came home, but she said you had already agreed that I needed to leave.””
Michael slowly turned toward his wife.
“Did you tell her I agreed to throw her out?””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“I told her what needed to be said.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“She was disrespecting me!””
“By seeing a message on your phone?””
“By constantly interfering in my marriage!””
Michael stared at her as though the sentence had revealed something he had never wanted to believe.
“Your marriage?”” he repeated.
“Emily is my daughter. She has lived in this house since before I met you. She has never interfered in our marriage.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You don't see what happens when you're not around.””
“Then explain it.””
“She challenges me. She questions everything I do. She acts like I'm some stranger who wandered into her mother's place.””
Emily went very still at the mention of her mother.
Michael noticed.
“Don't bring her mother into this,” he said.
“Why not? Everyone else pretends she never existed!””
The room fell silent.
Vanessa seemed to realize too late what she'd said. Her expression shifted, but the damage was done.
Michael's voice became quieter.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Nothing.””
“No. You brought up my first wife. Now tell me what you meant.””
She folded her arms tightly across her chest.
“I meant that Emily has never accepted me.””
Emily shook her head.
“I tried. I really did.””
“Don't pretend you're innocent,” Vanessa snapped.
“You made sure I never forgot that you were here first.””
Emily's eyes shone with tears.
“I used to save you a plate whenever you worked late. I helped you decorate this house. I defended you when Dad's sister said you were only interested in his money.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“I never asked you to do any of that.””
“You told me you were glad I was part of the family.””
“I was being polite!””
The confession hung in the air.
Emily stared at her stepmother, stunned.
Michael looked away for a moment, pressing his thumb against the bridge of his nose.
For years, he had believed that the occasional tension between his wife and daughter was ordinary family friction. Vanessa had always described Emily as overly sensitive, while Emily had tried to avoid making him choose sides.
Now he understood how easily that silence had been used against his daughter.
He turned toward the kitchen.
“Where is her phone?””
Vanessa didn't move.
“I don't know.””
Michael's eyes narrowed.
“You told me you put it somewhere safe.””
“I meant I put it away.””
“Where?””
“Michael, why are you suddenly acting like everything I've ever done is suspicious?””
“Because you've given me a reason to question you.””
She took a step backward.
He noticed.
“Vanessa, where is the phone?””
She reluctantly reached into her trouser pocket and pulled out Emily's device.
Michael held out his hand.
Vanessa hesitated before placing it in his palm.
He gave it to Emily.
“Check it, sweetheart. Make sure everything's there.””
Emily's hands shook as she unlocked the screen. She had expected to find missed calls from her father, but the battery was nearly dead, and there were no new messages.
Then she noticed a notification from an unfamiliar number.
Her eyebrows drew together.
“Dad?””
“What is it?””
“This came in before Vanessa took my phone.””
She opened the message.
It contained a photograph.
Emily's face lost color.
Michael leaned closer.
“What are you looking at?””
She turned the screen toward him.
The photograph showed Vanessa standing beside Darius in a parking garage. His arm was around her waist. They were smiling at the camera, and Vanessa was holding a folder against her chest.
Below the image was a short message.
Ask your dad what happened to the money from your mother's estate.
Michael stopped moving.
The room seemed to shrink around him.
“Where did this come from?”” he asked.
Emily shook her head.
“I don't know. The number isn't saved.””
Vanessa lunged toward the phone.
“Give me that!””
Michael caught her wrist before she could grab it.
“Don't touch her.””
Vanessa jerked free.
“You have no idea what that picture means!””
“Then tell me.””
“It's old!””
“How old?””
“I don't remember!””
Michael studied the photograph again. The folder Vanessa held was marked with the logo of the financial firm that had handled his late wife's estate.
He remembered the folder.
He remembered signing papers after his wife's death, when grief had made even the simplest decisions feel impossible. Vanessa had offered to help organize the documents because she said she had experience handling household finances.
He had trusted her.
He had let her manage more than he should have.
And now an unknown person was telling his daughter to ask where her mother's money had gone.
Michael looked up.
“Did you take money from my wife's estate?””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Absolutely not.””
“Then why are you in a parking garage with Darius holding documents from the firm that handled it?””
“I told you, the picture is old!””
“That's not an answer.””
She began pacing.
“This is ridiculous. Someone is trying to manipulate you, and you're letting them.””
“Who sent the message?””
“I don't know!””
“Why would someone send Emily a photograph of you and Darius?””
Vanessa stopped pacing.
For the first time, she appeared to be searching for an explanation she hadn't prepared in advance.
Emily looked at the photograph again.
Then she noticed something in the background.
A white sedan was parked across the garage, and its license plate was partially visible.
She enlarged the image.
“Dad,” she whispered, “look at that.””
Michael leaned toward the screen.
Emily pointed to the reflection in the sedan's rear window.
A third person had been standing nearby, holding a phone aimed directly at Vanessa and Darius.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone had documented their secret.
And whoever had sent the photograph knew enough about Emily's mother's estate to connect the affair to something far more serious.
Michael straightened.
“Vanessa,” he said, “I want every document related to that estate on this table. Tonight.””
She stared at him.
Then her eyes flicked toward the hallway, toward the closed door of the home office.
“No,” she whispered.
Michael's expression turned cold.
“Why not?””
May you like
Vanessa said nothing.
And that silence told him more than any explanation could have.
