Chapter 4: The Door She Couldn’t Lock

The first knock shook the front door.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the shattered decorative bowl, staring at the man on the other side of the glass. Michael hadn't shouted. He hadn't threatened her. Somehow, his silence frightened her more than either would have.

Darius took two steps backward.

“Vanessa, tell me you have a plan.””

She spun toward him.

“Stop talking.””

“He saw us.””

“I said stop talking!””

Another knock sounded.

“Vanessa,” Michael called through the door, his voice dangerously calm.

“Open it.””

She glanced at the hallway mirror. Her copper-brown hair was still in place, but her hands were trembling. She pressed them against her trousers, trying to steady herself.

Darius grabbed his jacket from the sofa.

“I'm leaving.””

Vanessa caught his wrist.

“You're not going anywhere.””

“Are you serious? Your husband is outside!””

“And if you walk out that door, you'll make this worse.””

“Worse?”” Darius pulled free.

“You told me he wouldn't be home. You told me Emily had left. You told me—”

“Keep your voice down!””

Michael knocked a third time.

“Vanessa. Now.””

She looked at the front door, then at Darius.

For four years, she had managed to make herself indispensable to Michael. She handled household appointments, organized his bills, remembered his work dinners, and knew exactly when to touch his arm or lower her voice to make him believe she was being reasonable.

She had built her marriage around the assumption that Michael would always give her the benefit of the doubt.

But he had seen the kiss with his own eyes.

She couldn't talk her way out of what he'd witnessed.

She could, however, control what happened next.

Vanessa straightened her blouse and lifted her chin.

“Stay in the living room,” she ordered Darius.

“Don't say anything unless I tell you to.””

Darius stared at her.

“You think you can control this?””

“I think you should remember whose house you're standing in.””

Before he could respond, she hurried to the door and unlocked it.

Michael stood on the porch, his face unreadable. His camel-brown jacket was no longer on his shoulders. Through the gap beside him, Vanessa could see Emily sitting against the wall, wrapped in the jacket and watching her with frightened eyes.

Vanessa's gaze flicked toward the girl.

“What happened?”” she asked, forcing surprise into her voice.

Michael didn't move.

“You tell me.””

Vanessa opened the door wider.

“Michael, thank goodness you're home. Emily's been having another episode, and I was just trying to—”

“Don't.””

One word.

She stopped.

Michael looked past her toward the living room. Darius stood near the sofa, holding his jacket in one hand.

“Who is that man?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“His name is Darius.””

“I didn't ask for his name.””

“Michael, please. Let me explain.””

“Explain what? Why my daughter is sitting outside in the cold? Why her phone is missing? Or why you were kissing a man in my living room?””

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

“It wasn't what you think.””

Michael gave a short, humorless laugh.

“I watched you kiss him.””

“We were just—”

“Don't insult me.””

His voice never rose. That made the words land harder.

Vanessa stepped toward him and reached for his arm.

“Michael, you're upset. I understand that. But we should talk privately.””

He moved his arm away before she could touch him.

“No. You had no problem making my daughter suffer in public. You can explain yourself right here.””

Emily lowered her eyes, clutching the jacket around her shoulders.

Vanessa noticed and immediately seized the opportunity.

“Emily, sweetheart, why don't you come inside? You're making this look much worse than it is.””

Emily stared at her.

“You took my phone.””

“I was trying to calm you down.””

“You pushed me outside.””

“You were being disrespectful!””

Michael stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

He turned toward Emily, and his expression softened.

“Baby, come inside.””

Emily hesitated.

Michael held out his hand.

“It's okay. I've got you.””

She took it, and he helped her stand. Her legs wobbled after sitting in the cold for so long. Michael steadied her with one arm, then guided her through the doorway.

As she passed Vanessa, Emily instinctively moved farther away from her.

Vanessa watched them enter.

The girl she had tried to silence was now standing beside the only person whose opinion mattered.

And Michael was looking at his wife as though he no longer recognized her.

“Where's Emily's phone?”” he asked.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I put it somewhere safe.””

“Get it.””

“Michael—”

“Get. Her. Phone.””

She flinched at the final word.

For a moment, she considered refusing. Then she remembered the messages on her own phone, the conversations she had hidden, and the things Darius knew about their relationship.

She couldn't afford to let Michael start searching the house.

“Fine,” she muttered.

She walked toward the kitchen, but Michael's voice stopped her.

“Leave your purse on the counter first.””

Vanessa slowly turned around.

“Why?””

“Because I asked you to.””

“You have no right to search my belongings!””

“I'm not searching anything. I want you to stop walking around this house hiding things while you tell me what happened.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You're treating me like a criminal.””

Michael glanced toward the shattered bowl.

“No, Vanessa. I'm treating you like someone who just lied to my face.””

Darius cleared his throat.

“Michael, I think I should go.””

Michael turned to him.

“You think?””

Darius shifted his weight.

“I didn't know Emily was outside.””

“Did you know she was thrown out of the house?””

Darius opened his mouth, then closed it.

Michael took a measured step toward him.

“Answer the question.””

“I knew she was out there.””

Emily stared at Darius.

“You saw me?””

Darius looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“And you stayed inside?””

He glanced at Vanessa.

“I didn't know what to do.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears again, but this time she didn't look away.

“You could have opened the door.””

Darius had no answer.

Michael's face tightened. He looked from Darius to Vanessa, absorbing the full ugliness of the scene.

Two adults had watched his daughter shiver outside.

One had put her there.

The other had chosen to ignore her.

“Darius,” Michael said, “leave.””

Darius immediately moved toward the door.

Vanessa stepped in front of him.

“No. He's not leaving until we finish this conversation.””

Michael stared at her.

“You don't get to decide that.””

“This is my home too!””

“And Emily is my daughter.””

The words silenced her.

Michael held the door open.

“Get out, Darius.””

Darius looked at Vanessa one last time, but she gave him nothing except a furious stare. He stepped onto the porch and disappeared into the darkness.

Michael closed the door behind him.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

“Now,” he said, “tell me why you threw my daughter out of this house.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, Emily quietly reached for Michael's hand.

“Dad,” she whispered, “there's something else you need to know.””

Michael looked down at her.

Emily's gaze shifted toward Vanessa.

“She didn't just take my phone.””

May you like

Her stepmother's face changed.

And for the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
