Chapter 7: The Name on the Photograph

“PUT THAT DOWN!””

Vanessa lunged toward the photograph, but Michael pulled it out of her reach.

For one second, all four corners of the room seemed to go silent. Emily stood beside the desk, clutching her phone. Michael held the photograph in one hand and the opened envelope in the other. Vanessa stared at the image as if it were a weapon pointed directly at her.

“Who is this man?”” Michael demanded.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Michael turned the photograph over again.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

*Marcus Bell.*

Beneath the name was a date from twenty-six years earlier, several months before Emily had been born.

Michael looked at his wife.

“You know exactly who this is.””

“I told you I don't.””

“Then why are you screaming?””

“Because you're tearing apart my life over a photograph!””

Michael placed it on the desk.

“No, Vanessa. I'm trying to understand why my wife's estate documents were hidden in your drawer, why eighty-five thousand dollars was transferred to an account I don't recognize, and why you appear terrified of a man's name.””

Vanessa pressed her back against the doorframe.

“You don't understand the circumstances.””

“Then explain them.””

She glanced toward Emily.

“Not in front of her.””

Emily's eyes widened.

“Why not? You've already made me part of this.””

“Emily, please.””

“No!”” Emily stepped away from the desk.

“You threw me outside like I was nothing. You stole my phone. You stood inside that house kissing another man while I froze on the porch. Now Dad finds money missing from my mother's estate, and suddenly you want privacy?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“Watch your tone.””

Michael turned toward her.

“Don't you ever speak to my daughter like that again.””

Vanessa stared at him, stunned by the finality in his voice.

For years, Michael had corrected Emily when she argued with Vanessa. He had told his daughter that marriage required compromise, that people needed time to adjust, and that he expected both women to treat each other respectfully.

Vanessa had mistaken his patience for permission.

Now he was standing between them, and there was no room left for her usual performance.

Michael picked up the photograph again.

“Who is Marcus Bell?””

Vanessa's shoulders slumped.

“He was someone your first wife knew.””

“Someone she knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don't know all the details.””

Michael leaned against the desk.

“Then tell me the details you do know.””

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“Your wife asked me to help organize some paperwork years ago. Before you married me. She was worried about something, and she wanted certain documents kept separate from the rest.””

Michael frowned.

“My wife was dead before you and I got married.””

“I know that!””

“Then how did you get access to her private papers?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Her attorney contacted me.””

Michael's expression changed.

“Which attorney?””

“I can't remember his name.””

“Convenient.””

“I was trying to help!””

“Help whom?””

Vanessa looked toward the photograph.

For the first time, Michael saw something beneath her anger that looked like genuine fear.

“I was told that some information could hurt Emily if it came out.””

Emily stepped forward.

“What information?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was never given the whole story.””

“Then why did you take money from my mother's estate?”” Emily asked.

Vanessa flinched.

Michael immediately noticed.

“You said you didn't take the money for yourself.””

“I didn't.””

“Who received it?””

She pressed her lips together.

Michael placed the notebook beside the bank statement.

“Your handwriting says, 'Darius — final payment.'' If that money went to him, why did you say he wasn't the beneficiary?””

Vanessa looked trapped.

“Because Darius was helping me.””

“With what?””

She glanced at the office door, as though calculating whether she could reach it before Michael stopped her.

He noticed and straightened.

“Don't even think about leaving.””

“I need some air.””

“You've had four years to tell me the truth. You're going to start now.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“You don't own me, Michael.””

“No. But you don't own my daughter's future either.””

That stopped her.

Emily moved closer to her father. Her hands were still shaking, but she no longer looked like the frightened young woman who had been left outside.

“Who is Marcus Bell?”” she asked again.

Vanessa looked at her.

Then, finally, she answered.

“Marcus was your mother's brother.””

Emily blinked.

“My mother didn't have a brother.””

“That's what you were told.””

Michael stared at Vanessa.

“By whom?””

“Your wife's family. They said he had left Georgia years earlier. They didn't want him involved in anything.””

Emily shook her head in disbelief.

“My grandmother never mentioned an Uncle Marcus. Not once.””

“Because she didn't want you asking questions.””

Michael picked up the photograph.

“Why was he holding a baby?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

“Stop saying that!””

“I swear, Michael, I don't know who the baby was.””

Emily looked at the date again.

The photograph had been taken before she was born.

A horrible thought entered her mind.

“Dad,” she whispered, “could that be me?””

Michael looked at the picture.

He studied the baby's face, then the man's expression, then the date written on the back.

He couldn't tell.

The photograph was too old, and the child was wrapped in a pale blanket.

But the possibility was enough to make his stomach tighten.

Before he could answer, Emily's phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown number appeared.

*Stop asking Vanessa. Ask her where the original birth certificate is.*

Michael read the message over Emily's shoulder.

Vanessa made a small, involuntary sound.

Emily slowly turned toward her.

“You know something about my birth certificate?””

“No.””

“Then why did you react like that?””

“I didn't!””

Michael placed the photograph on the desk and took out the brown envelope. Beneath the picture lay a legal document bearing his late wife's signature, followed by the seal of a Georgia notary.

The title read:

*CONFIDENTIAL FAMILY TRUST — AMENDMENT AND BENEFICIARY VERIFICATION.*

He scanned the first page.

His wife's estate had not been intended solely for Emily.

A second beneficiary had been named, but the name had been redacted on the copy in his hands.

Michael turned to the next page.

There was a reference to an original birth record, a sealed statement, and a condition requiring the estate administrator to verify the identities of both beneficiaries before releasing the remaining funds.

At the bottom was a date eighteen months earlier.

The same month the eighty-five thousand dollars had disappeared.

Michael looked up.

“Vanessa, did you know about this trust?””

She said nothing.

“Did you know there was another beneficiary?””

Her face had gone pale.

“Michael, please. You need to understand that your wife was trying to protect someone.””

“Who?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

Then the front doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

Michael glanced toward the hallway.

It rang again.

A man's voice carried through the house.

“Mr. Reed? My name is Marcus Bell. I believe you have something that belongs to me.””

Emily stared at the doorway.

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the desk to steady herself.

Michael looked down at the photograph one last time.

Then he walked toward the front door.

May you like

Because the man whose name had just shaken his entire family was standing outside his house.

And he had come looking for Emily.
