Chapter 3: The Kiss He Was Never Supposed to See

The engine stopped.

For a moment, Emily could do nothing but stare at the familiar vehicle parked in the driveway. Relief rose so quickly that it almost hurt.

Her father was home.

She pushed away from the wall and tried to walk toward the front steps, but her legs trembled beneath her. She caught the porch railing and drew a shaky breath.

“Dad,” she whispered.

Inside, Vanessa hadn't noticed the headlights at first.

She was too busy pulling Darius closer.

“Relax,” she murmured against his cheek.

“You're acting like we're committing a crime.””

Darius gave her a strained smile.

“Maybe because we're standing in your husband's living room.””

“Our living room.””

“You know what I mean.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Then stop thinking about Michael.””

She kissed him again.

Outside, a car door opened.

Michael stepped out wearing his camel-brown jacket over a forest-green shirt. His broad shoulders were tense from a long day, and a few silver strands showed through his short curly fade.

He had planned to stop by the office one last time before going home, but an unexpected cancellation had sent him back earlier than usual.

He was already thinking about dinner when he noticed a figure near the porch railing.

Then he recognized the mustard-yellow sweatshirt.

His expression changed.

“Emily?””

She tried to answer, but her throat tightened.

Michael hurried toward the house.

“What are you doing out here?””

He found her curled beside the front window, her white sneakers damp and her hands shaking. Her eyes were red, her braids had blown across her face, and she looked as though she had been crying for a long time.

Michael dropped to one knee.

“Baby, look at me.””

Emily lifted her head.

The instant she saw his face, the composure she had been struggling to maintain disappeared.

“Dad.””

He touched her shoulders gently.

“Emily, why are you sitting on the ground? You're freezing.””

“Vanessa kicked me out.””

Michael stared at her.

“What?””

“She took my phone, Dad. She pushed me outside, and she won't let me back in.””

He glanced at the front door, then back at his daughter.

“Why would she do that?””

“I don't know!”” Emily's voice cracked.

“I tried to talk to her. I told her I didn't want to fight. She just kept saying you wouldn't believe me.””

Michael's jaw tightened.

“Did she hurt you?””

“Not badly.”” Emily swallowed.

“She shoved me out the door.””

He looked at her arms, her trembling hands, and the damp knees of her charcoal joggers.

A quiet anger began to replace his concern.

“Why didn't you call me?””

“She took my phone!””

Michael closed his eyes for a brief moment, forcing himself to breathe.

“Okay. All right. You're here with me now.””

He started to rise, intending to get her inside and warm her up, but Emily caught his sleeve.

“Dad, wait.””

He looked down.

“There's something else.””

“What is it?””

Emily turned toward the living-room window.

Her face crumpled.

“She brought a man into the house.””

Michael followed her gaze.

“What man?””

“I don't know his name. But they're in there together.””

He looked through the glass.

At first, all he saw was the living room illuminated by the warm glow of the lamps. Then two figures moved into view near the sofa.

Vanessa.

And a man Michael had never seen before.

The man's arms were wrapped around his wife's waist. Vanessa's hands rested behind his neck, and their mouths met in a kiss that was unmistakably intimate.

Michael stopped breathing for a second.

The scene was so ordinary in its intimacy that it felt unreal. There was no frantic attempt to hide, no hurried explanation, no sign that Vanessa believed she was doing anything wrong.

She was kissing another man in the home Michael paid for.

The home where his daughter was sitting outside in the cold.

Michael's hand slowly fell away from Emily's shoulder.

She watched his face, terrified of what might happen next.

“Dad?””

He didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the couple.

The man leaned closer, and Vanessa laughed against his mouth before kissing him again.

Michael's expression went still.

It was not the explosive anger Emily expected. His face seemed to lose every trace of warmth, leaving behind something colder and more frightening.

Emily touched his arm.

“I tried to tell you.””

Michael finally looked at her.

“I'm listening, sweetheart.””

“She said you wouldn't believe me.””

He glanced at the window again.

“I believe you.””

The words were quiet, but Emily began to cry harder. For the first time that evening, she no longer had to convince someone that what happened to her was real.

Michael took off his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

“Stay right here for a minute.””

“Dad, please don't leave me.””

He crouched beside her again.

“I'm not leaving you. I'm right here.””

He adjusted the jacket around her, making sure it covered her arms, then stood slowly.

His eyes returned to the glass.

Inside, Darius drew back from Vanessa and glanced toward the front of the house.

“Did you hear something?”” he asked.

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“Outside. I thought I heard a car door.””

She gave him an impatient look.

“You're imagining things.””

“Vanessa, I'm serious.””

“And I'm serious when I say you're ruining the evening.””

She pulled him back toward her.

But Darius had already noticed the shape of a person standing beyond the window.

His smile disappeared.

“Vanessa.””

She kissed him again.

“Stop worrying.””

“There's someone out there.””

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the curtains.

Then she saw the shadow clearly.

A tall man stood on the porch, broad shoulders squared, one hand hanging at his side. Beside him sat Emily, wrapped in a camel-brown jacket.

Vanessa went rigid.

Darius released her.

“What is it?”” he whispered.

She didn't answer.

She took one small step away from him and stared through the glass.

Michael moved closer to the window.

Their eyes met.

For one suspended moment, neither of them moved.

Vanessa's face drained of color. Her lips parted, but no words came out. The confident smile she had worn all evening vanished as she realized exactly what Michael had witnessed.

He had seen the kiss.

He had seen the man.

And he had found Emily outside.

Michael turned toward the front door.

Vanessa stumbled backward, knocking a decorative bowl from the console table. It struck the floor and shattered.

Darius stared at the broken pieces, then at Michael approaching the entrance.

“Vanessa,” he whispered urgently, “what are you going to tell him?””

She couldn't answer.

The sound of Michael's footsteps reached the other side of the door.

May you like

And for the first time since she had married him, Vanessa understood that she might have just destroyed the one thing she had counted on most.

Michael's trust.
