Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Door
The door opened only a few inches at first.
Vanessa leaned into the gap and scanned the driveway before stepping onto the threshold. The cold air brushed her face, but she barely reacted. She wore the same cobalt-blue blouse and dark trousers she had worn all afternoon, and her expression carried the impatient confidence of someone who believed the evening was unfolding exactly as planned.
“Darius?”” she whispered.
A man emerged from the shadow beside the porch.
Darius wore a burgundy overshirt over a black T-shirt. His short curls had subtle auburn tips, and his trimmed goatee framed a cautious smile.
“You going to leave me standing out here all night?”” he asked.
Vanessa caught his wrist and pulled him inside.
“Keep your voice down.””
Darius glanced toward the living room.
“What's the emergency?””
“There is no emergency.””
“Then why did you text me three times telling me to hurry?””
Vanessa shut the door and locked it.
“Because I wanted to see you.””
He looked at her for a moment, then smiled.
“That sounds more like you.””
She laughed softly and placed both hands on his chest. The gesture was intimate, practiced, and entirely different from the coldness she had shown Emily moments earlier.
Darius wrapped his arms around her waist.
Vanessa kissed him.
For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. The house was quiet except for the low hum of the refrigerator and the faint rush of wind outside.
Then Darius drew back.
“You said Michael wouldn't be home.””
“He isn't.””
“You sure about that?””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Darius, I live here. Don't you think I'd know if my own husband were coming home?””
“Your husband has a habit of showing up when you least expect him.””
“And you have a habit of worrying about things that don't concern you.””
She straightened his collar and kissed him again before he could answer.
Darius allowed himself to relax, but his eyes drifted toward the large glass window overlooking the front porch.
He frowned.
“Is somebody outside?””
Vanessa followed his gaze.
Through the transparent glass, Emily sat curled against the wall, her arms wrapped around her knees. Her mustard-yellow sweatshirt stood out against the muted gray porch, and her shoulders shook beneath the cold wind.
Darius blinked.
“Is that Emily?””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“Yes.””
“Why is she sitting outside?””
“Because she needed to learn that she can't keep disrespecting me.””
Darius slowly released Vanessa's waist.
“You put her out there?””
“She is twenty-five, not five.””
“Vanessa, it's cold.””
“And?””
He stared at her.
She responded by taking his hand and pulling him farther into the living room.
“Don't start pretending you care about my family now.””
“That's not what I'm doing.””
“Good. Because I don't have the patience for it tonight.””
Darius looked back through the window. Emily had lowered her face into her arms, trying to shield herself from the wind.
“Does Michael know?”” he asked.
Vanessa laughed once.
“Michael thinks Emily has been looking for an excuse to leave for months. By tomorrow, I'll have him convinced she packed her things and went to stay with a friend.””
Darius's expression changed.
“You're going to lie to him?””
Vanessa stopped walking.
“Be careful.””
“I'm asking a question.””
“And I'm telling you not to make this complicated.””
She released his hand and moved to the kitchen counter, where a glass of water sat beside a stack of unopened mail. She picked up one envelope, glanced at the name on it, and dropped it back onto the counter.
“Michael has spent his whole life trying to rescue Emily,” she continued.
“Every problem she has becomes his problem. Every decision I make gets questioned because he thinks his daughter needs protecting.””
“Maybe she does.””
Vanessa turned so sharply that Darius fell silent.
“Excuse me?””
He raised his hands.
“I'm just saying she looks upset.””
“Then don't look at her.””
The words landed with such casual cruelty that Darius studied her face as though he were seeing a different person.
Vanessa noticed.
“What?””
“Nothing.””
“No, go ahead. Tell me what you're thinking.””
Darius shook his head.
“I thought you wanted a quiet night.””
“I do.”” She approached him again, sliding her arms around his neck.
“And I want you to stop acting like you're about to confess something to a priest.””
He gave a reluctant laugh.
“You're impossible.””
“And you love that about me.””
She kissed his cheek, then his mouth. His resistance faded, and his arms returned to her waist.
Behind them, Emily shifted on the porch, trying to find a position that would keep the wind from cutting through her clothes.
She couldn't hear their conversation clearly. She could only see two figures moving close together through the glass.
At first, she thought Vanessa might be speaking to a friend.
Then she saw the way the man held her.
The way Vanessa's fingers moved along the back of his neck.
The way she leaned forward and kissed him as if there were no one else in the world.
Emily stared.
Her father had been married to Vanessa for four years. He trusted her with his home, his finances, and the daughter he had promised to protect after losing his first wife.
Emily had defended Vanessa when relatives questioned the marriage. She had told herself that her stepmother simply needed time to adjust to sharing a household with an adult daughter.
Now Emily sat outside in the cold, watching that same woman kiss another man in her father's living room.
Her mouth went dry.
She tried to stand, but her legs felt stiff from sitting on the porch boards. She braced one hand against the wall and pulled herself upright.
Inside, Darius glanced toward the glass again.
“I really think we should go somewhere else,” he murmured.
Vanessa touched his jaw.
“Why?””
“Because if Michael comes home—”
“He won't.””
“How can you be so sure?””
“Because he told me he had a late meeting.””
Darius hesitated.
“And Emily?””
Vanessa looked toward the window, where Emily had now pressed one hand against the glass.
For an instant, their eyes met.
Emily saw Vanessa recognize her.
She expected her stepmother to look ashamed.
Instead, Vanessa's face hardened.
She raised one finger to her lips, ordering Emily to stay quiet.
Then she drew the curtains halfway across the window.
Emily's hand fell away from the glass.
Vanessa turned back to Darius, smiling again.
“See?”” she whispered.
“No problem.””
Darius pulled her close, but his eyes remained uneasy.
Outside, Emily stumbled back against the porch wall, fighting the cold and the awful realization that Vanessa wasn't merely trying to get rid of her.
She was hiding something.
And whatever it was, Vanessa was willing to leave Michael's daughter freezing outside to keep it secret.
Emily closed her eyes and tried to think.
She needed a way to contact her father.
She needed him to come home.
Then headlights swept across the driveway.
A car turned onto the property, its beams sliding across the front windows and illuminating the couple standing together inside.
Emily looked toward the road.
May you like
She recognized that car.
Her father's car.
