Chapter 9: The Brother Nobody Knew Existed
James didn't speak.
He could hear his mother crying through the phone, but the words wouldn't register.
A brother.
He had grown up as an only child.
His father had never mentioned another child. His mother had never hinted at a previous relationship.
And yet Peter Lawson had left a photograph suggesting that the Carter family had been hiding something for decades.
“Mom,” James finally said, “are you certain?””
“I don't know, sweetheart. I only know what the note says.””
“Describe the photograph.””
“There are three men. Your father. Peter. And Richard Whitmore's father.””
James looked toward Michael.
“Can you send me the photograph?””
“I can try. The folder is in your father's workshop.””
“Don't touch anything else. Security will help you.””
His mother hesitated.
“James, there's a name written underneath the photograph.””
“What name?””
“Ethan.””
James closed his eyes.
Ethan Carter.
He had heard that name once before.
When he was twelve, his father had taken him to an old warehouse. A teenage boy had been standing near the loading dock.
James remembered asking who he was.
His father had answered, “Someone who needs a second chance.””
The boy had looked almost exactly like James.
A few weeks later, the warehouse had closed.
The boy had disappeared.
James had forgotten the incident.
Until now.
“Mom,” he whispered, “did Dad ever tell you about a boy named Ethan?””
Silence.
Then Margaret answered.
“Yes.””
James gripped the table.
“What did he tell you?””
“He said Ethan was the son of an old friend. He wanted to help him.””
“Did you ever meet him?””
“No. But your father used to send money to someone under that name.””
James looked at the trust documents.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father asked me not to.””
James ended the call after promising to send security.
He turned toward Michael.
“Find every record connected to Ethan Carter.””
Michael immediately began typing.
Vanessa approached James.
“Who is Ethan?””
“I don't know yet.””
“Could he be the person receiving the money?””
“Possibly.””
Richard's earlier warning echoed in James's mind.
The greatest threat was not the person asking for the money.
It was the person who already knew where it was.
James looked at the photograph on the screen.
His father.
Peter.
Richard's father.
And a fourth shadow reflected in the glass behind them.
A figure standing just outside the frame.
Emily returned with a call from the bank.
“Mr. Carter, the court has issued a temporary injunction. Both transfers are frozen.””
James nodded.
“Good.””
“But there's a problem with the first transfer.””
“What?””
“The $18.6 million was never supposed to go directly to Margaret Carter.””
James frowned.
“Then where?””
Emily handed him a new transaction report.
The money had been routed through a private trust established in Margaret's name.
The trust had one additional beneficiary.
Ethan Carter.
James stared at the screen.
Vanessa moved closer.
“So Ethan is real.””
“Yes.””
Michael suddenly spoke.
“Mr. Carter, I found something.””
James turned.
“What?””
“Ethan Carter isn't just connected to the trust. He was employed by Whitmore Financial until eight months ago.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“Richard employed him?””
Michael nodded.
“Under a different name.””
He displayed an employment photograph.
A young man in a dark suit stared back at them.
James recognized him immediately.
He was the same man who had been standing outside the warehouse all those years ago.
And he was the same man who had attended several Whitmore Foundation meetings.
His name on the employment file was Daniel Price.
Vanessa gasped.
“Daniel?””
Michael nodded.
“The man listed as dead.””
James felt his stomach tighten.
“Daniel Price is Ethan Carter?””
“According to the personnel records, yes.””
Vanessa sat down.
“But Richard said Daniel died.””
Michael opened another document.
“There's no verified death certificate in the company archive. The employment termination was processed using a private legal notice.””
James looked at the date.
Eight months earlier.
That was when Daniel had supposedly died.
But the authorization using Daniel's credentials had been submitted eleven months earlier.
Meaning Daniel had been alive when the account was reactivated.
And possibly much longer.
James leaned over the laptop.
“Find his current address.””
Michael shook his head.
“I already tried. His company records were deleted.””
“Banking records?””
“Restricted.””
“Travel records?””
Michael paused.
“There's one.””
He opened a document.
A passenger manifest showed a man named Ethan Carter boarding a flight from New York to London three days earlier.
Vanessa looked up.
“Laura Bennett flew to London today.””
James nodded.
“They're together.””
Michael opened another attachment.
It was a hotel reservation.
Two rooms had been booked under the same corporate account.
One for Laura Bennett.
One for Ethan Carter.
James looked at the address.
“Call our London office. Get a local attorney involved. I want the hotel to preserve the booking records and any relevant security footage through the proper legal process.””
Emily nodded and left.
Vanessa stared at James.
“Do you think Richard knows Ethan is your brother?””
“I think he knows more than he's telling us.””
She looked down at her hands.
“Then why did he marry me?””
James didn't answer.
But a new message arrived on his phone.
Unknown number.
The message contained a photograph.
It showed James's mother sitting inside her house, looking toward the camera.
Underneath it was a sentence.
*YOUR MOTHER SHOULD HAVE KEPT PETER'S FOLDER CLOSED.*
James immediately called security.
No answer.
He tried again.
This time, a guard picked up.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Where is my mother?””
“She's safe. We're outside the property.””
“Is anyone inside?””
A pause.
Then the guard answered.
“There's a vehicle parked across the street. We've been monitoring it.””
James felt his stomach tighten.
“What vehicle?””
“A black SUV.””
“License plate?””
The guard read it out.
James recognized the registration.
It belonged to Whitmore Financial.
He looked at Richard's empty chair.
“Keep your distance. Don't confront anyone. Contact the police and preserve the footage.””
He ended the call.
Vanessa had heard enough.
“Richard sent someone?””
“I don't know.””
“But the car belongs to his company.””
James turned toward her.
“Did Richard ever mention your mother-in-law's financial arrangements?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Did he ever ask you about Peter Lawson?””
She hesitated.
Then her expression changed.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“About a year after we married. He asked whether James's mother still lived in the same house.””
James stared.
“What did you tell him?””
“I told him I didn't know.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought it was a strange question.””
James took a step backward.
He remembered something.
During the final months of his marriage to Vanessa, Peter had repeatedly warned him that the Carter family was being watched.
James had dismissed it as paranoia.
Now he understood that Peter hadn't been worried about the money.
He had been worried about the people who wanted to control it.
Richard's phone, which had been left on the conference table, suddenly vibrated.
Vanessa glanced at it.
The screen displayed a message from an unsaved number.
*THE BROTHER IS READY. THE WOMAN HAS THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.*
James picked up the phone.
There was an audio attachment.
He pressed play.
A man's voice filled the room.
It was older, rough, and unmistakably familiar.
James's father.
“Peter, if anything happens to me, make sure James never finds out about Ethan until he's ready.””
A second voice answered.
Peter Lawson.
“What about Richard's family?””
James's father replied.
“They already know. And that's why neither boy can be allowed to inherit the money without understanding what happened.””
The recording ended.
Vanessa looked at James.
“Your father knew Richard's family?””
James nodded slowly.
Then he noticed the final line of the message.
*THE WOMAN HAS THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.*
He turned toward Vanessa.
“What woman?””
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
“James... I think I know.””
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“Laura Bennett.””
James looked at the hotel reservation again.
“Why would she have your father's recording?””
Vanessa opened her handbag with trembling hands.
Then she removed a small envelope.
“I found this in Richard's desk two weeks ago. I didn't know what it was, so I kept it.””
James opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Laura Bennett standing beside a young man.
Ethan.
On the back, someone had written:
*THE TWO PEOPLE WHO CAN PROVE WHO REALLY OWNS THE CARTER TRUST.*
James looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?””
She met his eyes.
“Because there was something else inside Richard's desk.””
“What?””
“A letter addressed to me.””
James opened the folded paper.
It contained only three sentences.
You were never supposed to marry Richard Whitmore.
You were supposed to marry Ethan Carter.
And the man who arranged your divorce from James was the same man who arranged your second marriage.
James slowly lowered the letter.
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Peter knew?””
James looked at the handwriting.
It belonged to Peter Lawson.
And beneath the final sentence was a date.
Six years earlier.
The exact date of their divorce.
For the first time, James understood that their separation might never have been an accident.
But before he could say anything, his phone rang again.
The caller ID showed a London number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke immediately.
“Mr. Carter, this is Detective Harris with the Metropolitan Police. We have located Laura Bennett.””
James stood.
“Is she safe?””
“She is. But she has requested to speak with you.””
“Why?””
The detective hesitated.
“Because she says she has evidence concerning the Carter trust, the missing charity money, and the identity of Daniel Price.””
James tightened his grip on the phone.
“Where is she?””
The detective gave him an address.
Then he added one final sentence.
“Mr. Carter, there's something you should know before you come. Laura claims the person who orchestrated the entire scheme wasn't Richard Whitmore.””
James felt his stomach drop.
“Who was it?””
The detective paused.
“Your mother, Margaret Carter.””
Vanessa gasped.
James couldn't move.
His mother had spent twenty years protecting him.
And now the woman who had raised him might be the person behind the greatest betrayal of his life.
He looked at the photograph of his father.
Then at the letter Peter had left.
There was only one way to find out the truth.

And the person waiting in London had promised to reveal everything.
*Including why James Carter had spent his entire life believing he was an only child.*
