Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Destroy Them Both
“Don't touch that door.””
James's voice stopped Richard halfway across the conference room.
Richard turned slowly.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No. I'm telling you that the documents you submitted may constitute evidence in a criminal investigation. Leaving doesn't make them disappear.””
Richard laughed nervously.
“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””
James closed the laptop.
“Then explain it.””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him to stop.””
She stood motionless.
For six years, Richard had controlled almost every financial decision in their marriage. He chose their investments, handled their taxes, managed their charitable donations, and decided which people were trustworthy.
Whenever Vanessa questioned something, he reminded her how fortunate she was.
Now she was beginning to understand why.
“You told me the document was for estate planning,” she said.
Richard sighed.
“It was.””
“You told me James had no rights to the family trust.””
“He doesn't.””
“Then why did you need my signature?””
“Because you're listed as a beneficiary.””
James stepped forward.
“She's not simply listed as a beneficiary. Peter Lawson created the trust to protect her ownership rights.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Peter was a dead man with an unhealthy obsession with protecting James.””
“No,” James replied.
“Peter understood something you didn't. He knew that people who control money often confuse ownership with power.””
Emily placed a new document on the table.
“Mr. Carter, the legal team has reviewed the authorization.””
James opened it.
The first page contained the clause Vanessa had signed.
The second contained something worse.
A provision stating that Vanessa accepted personal responsibility for all transactions processed through the Carter Family Trust after the release became effective.
The clause included the disputed $18.6 million and the missing $2.7 million from the children's medical fund.
Vanessa read it slowly.
Her face drained of color.
“He made me responsible for the money.””
James nodded.
“If the transfer had gone through, the financial structure could have made it appear that you accepted the liabilities voluntarily.””
Vanessa looked at Richard.
“You were going to let me take the blame?””
Richard rubbed his temples.
“That's not what was supposed to happen.””
“Then what was supposed to happen?””
He looked toward the window.
“Everything was supposed to be transferred before the audit became public.””
The admission landed like a physical blow.
James stared at him.
“Transferred where?””
Richard said nothing.
Michael opened his briefcase.
“I can answer that.””
He placed another report on the table.
“The Carter trust was designed to hold shares in three companies. Together, those companies control several commercial properties, investment portfolios, and private equity interests.””
James nodded.
“I know what's in the trust.””
Michael continued.
“According to the release agreement, once the transfer was completed, the ownership would pass to a holding company in Switzerland.””
“And who controls that company?”” James asked.
Michael hesitated.
“Richard Whitmore.””
Vanessa grabbed the edge of the table.
“So you married me to get control of James's family's money?””
Richard turned toward her.
“Don't make this about our marriage.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“How can I not?””
“Your marriage has nothing to do with business.””
“You used my signature to steal money from sick children!””
Richard raised his voice.
“I was trying to save the foundation!””
“By taking money?””
“By moving money!””
James stepped between them.
“Richard, where did the money go?””
Richard pointed at him.
“You think you're some kind of hero because you arrived in a Rolls-Royce?””
James remained calm.
“No. I think I made a mistake when I believed the people around Vanessa were honest.””
Richard laughed.
“Your mistake was leaving her with nothing.””
Vanessa flinched.
James didn't.
“I didn't leave her with nothing.””
Richard scoffed.
“You were broke.””
“I was building a company. There was a difference.””
“And she got tired of waiting.””
James glanced at Vanessa.
“Yes. She did.””
The room became quiet.
For a moment, Vanessa couldn't meet his eyes.
Then James continued.
“I didn't blame her for wanting a different life. But I never gave anyone permission to steal her future.””
He turned toward Emily.
“Has the bank confirmed the second transfer is frozen?””
“Not yet. They're reviewing the release agreement.””
“Call our legal team. We need an emergency injunction.””
Emily left immediately.
Richard shook his head.
“You can't stop the transfer. The documents are already signed.””
James looked at him.
“Electronic signatures can be challenged. Especially when the signer was misled about the nature of the agreement.””
Vanessa looked up.
“Can I prove I didn't understand what I signed?””
“You can provide the original emails, messages, and any documents Richard gave you. Don't alter or delete anything.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“She's going to destroy herself trying to protect you.””
Vanessa turned.
“No, Richard. I'm going to stop protecting you.””
He stared at her.
“You have no idea what you're saying.””
“I know exactly what I'm saying.””
Richard approached her.
“Think about your lifestyle. Your house. Your accounts. Everything you've built.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I didn't build those things. You gave them to me so I'd stop asking questions.””
Richard's expression changed.
Then he said something that made the entire room go silent.
“You want to know why I married you?””
Vanessa didn't move.
Richard smiled coldly.
“Because Peter told me you were the only person who could unlock the Carter trust.””
James stepped forward.
“When did Peter tell you that?””
“Before he died.””
“You knew about the trust before you met Vanessa?””
Richard shrugged.
“I knew there was an opportunity.””
James stared at him.
“What opportunity?””
Richard leaned back.
“Peter had discovered something about your father. Something that could have destroyed your family if it became public.””
James felt his stomach tighten.
“My father died twenty years ago.””
“And Peter spent years trying to clean up what he left behind.””
James's voice dropped.
“What did my father do?””
Richard smiled.
“Ask your mother.””
Vanessa looked at James.
“Richard, what are you talking about?””
But Richard had already picked up his phone.
A notification appeared on the screen.
He read it.
Then he smiled again.
“You're too late.””
James checked his own phone.
An alert from the bank appeared.
The first emergency restriction had been lifted.
The $18.6 million transfer was back in processing.
James immediately called Helen.
“Why was the hold removed?””
Her voice came through the speaker.
“Someone submitted a new beneficiary verification. It bypassed the original dispute because the release agreement was accepted.””
James looked at Vanessa.
“Did you sign anything else?””
She shook her head.
Richard slowly raised his phone.
“No,” he said.
“She didn't.””
He turned the screen toward James.
A digital confirmation appeared.
*FINAL BENEFICIARY RELEASE ACCEPTED.*
Beneath it was Vanessa's signature.
And the verification time was only thirty seconds earlier.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
“I didn't do that.””
Richard slipped his phone into his pocket.
“Unfortunately, the system says otherwise.””
James looked at him.
“Who authorized the verification?””
Richard's smile widened.
“My attorney.””
Then he walked out.
James stood motionless for a moment.
May you like
Because the man who had spent six years pretending to love Vanessa had just demonstrated exactly how far he was willing to go to destroy her.
And somewhere, a bank was preparing to release forty-two million dollars.
