Chapter 3: The Truth Behind Her Name
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa slowly turned toward her husband.
“Richard?””
He didn't look at her.
James placed both hands on the table.
“Helen, send us the original record.””
“Already sent. Check your secure inbox.””
James opened his phone.
A minute later, the document appeared.
The first authorization request had been submitted using Richard's executive credentials.
It had been rejected because the transaction exceeded his permitted approval limit.
Four hours later, a second request appeared.
Same amount.
Same destination accounts.
Different authorization structure.
This time, Vanessa's name appeared as the approving board member.
Richard's executive verification token remained attached.
Vanessa read the document twice.
“You used my name?””
Richard finally looked up.
“Vanessa, listen to me.””
“Did you use my name?””
“It's not what you think.””
She stepped away from him.
“Then tell me what it is.””
Richard exhaled sharply.
“The foundation was restructuring its investments. The transfers were temporary.””
“Temporary?””
“The money was going to be returned.””
“Then why did you put my name on the authorization?””
Richard rubbed his face.
“Because the system required a board member's approval.””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“And you couldn't get your own approval?””
“I was trying to protect the foundation from unnecessary delays.””
James watched them silently.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You knew about this?””
“No.””
“Then why did you investigate us?””
James hesitated.
“Because one of the hospitals affected by the missing funds is St. Catherine's Children's Center.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What does that have to do with you?””
James reached into his jacket and removed a small photograph.
It showed a little girl sitting in a hospital bed.
She was about seven years old, with dark curls and a thin pink blanket over her legs.
Vanessa recognized the hospital room.
She had visited that facility during a fundraising campaign.
“Who is she?””
“Her name is Lily.””
James looked at the photograph.
“She needed a specialized heart procedure. The foundation had pledged to cover the cost.””
Vanessa's face softened.
“Did she get it?””
James shook his head.
“The hospital canceled the procedure when the promised funding didn't arrive.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Is she alive?””
“Yes. But she's still waiting.””
Richard interrupted.
“This is emotional manipulation.””
James turned toward him.
“It's a child's life.””
Richard stood.
“Don't lecture me about charity. You have no idea how difficult it is to manage an organization like ours.””
James stared at him.
“I know what it's like to struggle.””
He paused.
“And I know what it's like to be unable to pay for someone's medical treatment.””
Vanessa looked at James.
For a moment, she saw the young man she had married.
The one who used to bring home leftover sandwiches from work because he wanted to save money for their future.
She remembered the winter their apartment lost heating.
James had given her his only warm coat.
He had gone to work in a thin sweater.
Back then, she had called him irresponsible.
She had told him love wasn't enough.
And when he couldn't give her the life she wanted, she left.
“James,” she whispered.
“How did you become so successful?””
He looked at her.
“By making mistakes. By learning from them. And by refusing to let one bad year decide the rest of my life.””
Richard laughed.
“Spare us the inspirational speech.””
James ignored him.
Vanessa looked down at the authorization.
“Richard, I want to know exactly what happened.””
Richard's voice softened.
“Sweetheart, we can discuss this at home.””
“No. We're discussing it now.””
“Vanessa, think about your reputation.””
She stared at him.
“My reputation?””
“You're on the board. Your signature is on the documents. If this becomes public, you'll be dragged into it.””
Her face went white.
“So you admit you used my signature?””
Richard looked away.
“I didn't forge anything.””
“Then what did you do?””
“I asked the office to process the authorization under your account.””
“You didn't tell me.””
“I didn't think you'd understand the financial structure.””
Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.
“You let me believe I was helping children.””
“You were helping the foundation.””
James slowly picked up the photograph of Lily.
“Richard, there's another question.””
Richard glared at him.
“What now?””
“Why did the money pass through three companies before reaching the offshore account?””
Richard said nothing.
James continued.
“Because the audit found a fourth company. It received a management fee from each transfer.””
Richard's expression tightened.
“And?””
“The company is called Whitmore Legacy Services.””
Vanessa frowned.
“I've never heard of it.””
James slid a printed corporate record across the table.
The company had been incorporated eighteen months earlier.
Its registered address was a luxury apartment building in Manhattan.
Its controlling shareholder was listed as a trust.
James pointed to the final line.
“The trust's beneficiary is listed as your husband.””
Vanessa slowly turned toward Richard.
“Is this true?””
Richard grabbed the paper.
“That's a private investment structure.””
“Did you take the children's money?””
“No!””
“Then why is your name on the company receiving the fees?””
“Because I established the structure to manage legitimate investments!””
James opened another page.
“Then you'll be able to explain the payments.””
Richard slammed the paper down.
“You think you're untouchable because you have a few billion dollars?””
James's expression didn't change.
“No. I think nobody should be untouchable when children's medical funds disappear.””
Richard stepped closer.
“You've wanted to humiliate me since you walked through that door.””
James shook his head.
“I didn't even know you were involved until tonight.””
Vanessa looked between them.
Then she noticed something on the financial report.
A small note beside the original authorization.
*SECONDARY APPROVER: V. WHITMORE.*
Underneath it was a date.
March 12.
She remembered that day now.
She had been in Richard's office after a charity luncheon. His assistant had brought in a stack of papers.
Richard had told her they were routine board renewals.
She had signed without reading them.
But one detail disturbed her.
She remembered asking whether she should review the documents first.
Richard had smiled and kissed her forehead.
He had said, "You don't need to worry about these things. That's why you married me.""
Vanessa looked up.
“You told me those papers were board renewals.””
Richard sighed.
“I was busy.””
“You said there was nothing important in them.””
“Vanessa, please.””
“You told me to trust you.””
He reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
James watched her carefully.
“Vanessa, I need to ask you something.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“Did you ever receive an email asking you to approve these transactions?””
“No.””
“Did anyone call you about them?””
“No.””
“Did you enter your password or security code?””
She shook her head.
James exchanged a glance with Emily.
“Then we need to preserve the original access logs.””
Richard laughed nervously.
“This is absurd. You're treating my wife like a criminal.””
James looked directly at him.
“I'm treating the evidence seriously.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know,” she whispered.
James nodded.
“I believe you might not have.””
Richard immediately seized on the words.
“See? Even James agrees. This is all a misunderstanding.””
But James wasn't finished.
“However, there's something else.””
He opened the last attachment in the audit package.
A transaction history.
The disputed funds had not simply disappeared.
Some of them had been used to pay a private mortgage.
Others had covered a luxury property renovation.
And one transfer had been sent to a bank account in Vanessa's name.
She stared at the screen.
“What?””
James turned the laptop toward her.
“Three hundred thousand dollars.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never received that money.””
Richard stood abruptly.
“That's enough.””
James looked at him.
“Why?””
Richard's voice rose.
“Because you don't get to sit here and interrogate my wife!””
Vanessa moved away from him.
“Richard, whose account is that?””
He didn't answer.
“Whose account?””
Richard looked at James, then at Vanessa.
Finally, he spoke.
“It's an investment account. I opened it for our future.””
“Under my name?””
“Yes.””
“Using money from the children's fund?””
“It was temporary!””
Vanessa's knees weakened.
She reached for the edge of the table.
James closed the laptop.
“Vanessa, I want you to understand something. Your signature may have been used without your informed consent. But we need evidence. Don't delete anything, don't contact anyone involved, and don't sign another document until an independent attorney reviews it.””
Richard pointed at him.
“Stop giving her orders!””
James calmly replied.
“Then perhaps you should have stopped giving her fraudulent paperwork.””
The door opened.
Helen Morris entered, carrying a second envelope.
“Mr. Carter, we've received the bank's preliminary response.””
James accepted it.
He opened the envelope.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then he stopped.
“What is it?”” Emily asked.
James didn't answer.
He read the page again.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“James?””
He looked up.
The expression on his face was no longer anger.
It was shock.
“The three hundred thousand dollars wasn't deposited into an investment account.””
He turned the paper around.
“It was transferred into an account established in your name six months before your marriage to Richard.””
Vanessa froze.
“That account was closed years ago.””
James stared at the account number.
Then he looked at her.
“Who told you it was closed?””
“Richard.””
James slowly placed the document on the table.
“Vanessa, the account wasn't closed.””
He paused.
“And the person who opened it wasn't Richard.””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Then who was it?””
James looked at the final line.
A name appeared beneath the account's original ownership record.
*JAMES CARTER.*
Vanessa stumbled backward.
Richard went completely silent.
And James, for the first time that evening, looked genuinely shaken.
Because six years earlier, before their divorce, he had opened one private account for one specific reason.
He had never told Vanessa about it.
May you like
And he had never authorized anyone to use it.
*Now someone had moved children's charity money through an account bearing both their names—and James was beginning to suspect that the scandal had started long before Richard Whitmore entered Vanessa's life.*
