Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Everything
James read the beneficiary's name three times.
Margaret Carter.
His mother.
For several seconds, the conference room seemed to disappear.
He was no longer the billionaire founder of Carter Global Holdings.
He was a frightened seventeen-year-old boy standing in a hospital corridor, listening to his mother tell him they would somehow survive another difficult month.
His mother had raised him alone after his father died.
She had worked two jobs.
She had sold her wedding ring to pay for his college application fees.
And when James started his first business, she had given him the last $8,000 in her savings.
He had promised to return every dollar.
He eventually did.
But he had never forgotten the sacrifice.
Now her name was connected to an $18.6 million transfer involving missing children's charity money.
“That's not possible,” he said quietly.
Vanessa approached him.
“James?””
He held up the document.
“Someone is using my mother's identity.””
Richard laughed.
“Convenient.””
James turned.
“What?””
“You find a dead employee, an inactive company, and now your own mother is somehow involved. Perhaps this entire audit is a little more complicated than you want everyone to believe.””
James stepped toward him.
“Choose your next words carefully.””
Richard raised his hands.
“I'm simply saying you shouldn't assume your family is innocent.””
James's expression hardened.
“Neither should you.””
He turned toward Michael.
“Where is the transfer scheduled?””
“Tonight. At 11:59 p.m.””
James checked the time.
It was already 9:20.
“Can it be stopped?””
Michael shook his head.
“Not through the foundation. The authorization has already been processed.””
Helen immediately picked up her phone.
“I can contact the bank's fraud department and request an emergency hold.””
“Do it,” James said.
She left the room.
James called his mother.
The phone rang four times.
Finally, she answered.
“James? Is everything all right?””
Her familiar voice made his chest tighten.
“Mom, I need to ask you something.””
“What's happened?””
“Have you opened any overseas bank accounts recently?””
A pause.
“No, sweetheart. Why?””
“Has anyone asked you to receive money on behalf of another person?””
“No.””
“Has anyone contacted you about an investment?””
Another pause.
“Actually, yes.””
James straightened.
“Who?””
“Someone from a financial company. They said they were reviewing an old family investment connected to your father.””
James closed his eyes.
“Did they mention Peter Lawson?””
His mother became silent.
Then she spoke softly.
“James, where are you?””
“I'm at a business meeting. Mom, please answer me.””
She exhaled.
“Peter came to see me years ago.””
James gripped the phone.
“When?””
“About six months before he died.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“He said it was a private matter.””
“What did he want?””
Margaret hesitated.
“He gave me a folder. He said if anything happened to him, I should keep it safe.””
James looked at the documents on the table.
“Do you still have it?””
“Yes.””
“Don't open it. Don't give it to anyone. I'll come get it.””
His mother sounded frightened.
“James, is something wrong?””
He looked at the $18.6 million transfer.
“I'm afraid someone is using your name.””
Margaret gasped.
“Oh, my God.””
“Mom, listen carefully. Don't answer any calls from people claiming to represent Peter's company.””
“Okay.””
“And don't leave the house until I arrange security.””
“James?””
“Yes?””
Her voice trembled.
“There's something else you should know.””
He waited.
“The folder had Vanessa's name on it.””
James slowly looked across the room.
Vanessa was watching him.
“What did you say?””
Margaret continued.
“Peter wrote her name on the front. He told me she would understand when the time came.””
James stared at Vanessa.
“Mom, I'll call you back.””
He ended the call.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What did your mother say?””
James held up the phone.
“Peter Lawson left my mother a folder with your name on it.””
Vanessa looked genuinely confused.
“Why would he do that?””
“That's what I intend to find out.””
Richard laughed.
“Perhaps your ex-wife has been involved in your business longer than you realized.””
Vanessa turned on him.
“Stop it.””
Richard looked surprised.
She continued.
“You've spent the entire evening blaming everyone except yourself. Daniel. Michael.
James. Now his mother.””
“Watch your tone.””
“No.””
Richard stepped closer.
“You're my wife.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I'm beginning to wonder whether you ever saw me as anything other than a signature on a document.””
Richard's face changed.
“Don't be ridiculous.””
James placed the financial report inside his folder.
“Vanessa, I need to speak with my mother and retrieve that folder. But before I leave, there's something you should see.””
He opened his laptop and displayed an old corporate filing.
It showed the company Peter Lawson had established before his death.
At the bottom was a scanned letter dated six years earlier.
James recognized Peter's handwriting immediately.
He read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
His face went pale.
“What is it?”” Emily asked.
James didn't answer.
Vanessa approached the screen.
The letter began:
To James Carter and Vanessa Carter,
If you're reading this, the financial arrangement I established has been compromised. I originally created it to protect the two of you from a threat neither of you understood.
James kept reading.
The company was never intended to receive charity funds. It was designed to hold a private trust that would eventually belong to the person who had been wronged.
Vanessa looked at James.
“Wronged by whom?””
James scrolled down.
The next paragraph contained a name.
Richard Whitmore.
But the date at the top of the letter was what disturbed James most.
It had been written three months before Richard first met Vanessa.
He read the final lines aloud.
“Richard knew about the Carter trust before he married you.””
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
“No.””
James looked at her.
“The letter says he approached you because he believed you had access to something valuable.””
Richard's face turned red.
“This is forged.””
James continued reading.
The final sentence was underlined twice.
Most importantly, Vanessa must never be allowed to sign the final transfer document without knowing what she is giving away.
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
“What final transfer document?””
James looked at the bottom of the screen.
There was an attachment.
A scanned authorization.
Its title read:
*CARTER FAMILY TRUST — FINAL BENEFICIARY RELEASE.*
The document had been prepared six years earlier.
And beneath the signature line was a blank space.
Waiting for Vanessa.
James looked up.
“Vanessa, have you ever signed anything releasing your rights to a family trust?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Richard moved toward the laptop.
James closed it before he could reach it.
Then Michael spoke from the doorway.
“I'm sorry, Mr. Carter.””
Everyone turned.
Michael was holding his phone.
“The bank just confirmed the emergency hold.””
James exhaled.
“Good.””
Michael shook his head.
“There's a problem.””
“What problem?””
“The $18.6 million transfer was only one part of the transaction.””
James stared at him.
Michael turned the phone around.
A second transaction was scheduled for the same time.
This one was for $42 million.
Its beneficiary was the Carter Family Trust.
And the authorization required one final signature.
Vanessa's.
She looked at the screen.
Then she whispered something that made James go completely still.
“I already signed it.””
Richard closed his eyes.
James slowly turned toward her.
“When?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Last week. Richard told me it was a routine document to update our estate planning.””
James stared at her.
“Vanessa, do you understand what you signed?””
She shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“No. But I remember one sentence he said before I signed.””
James waited.
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“He told me that once the paperwork was complete, you would never be able to claim anything from the Carter family again.””
Richard suddenly reached for the door.
But James didn't follow him.
He was staring at the signature on the screen.
Because the final beneficiary release wasn't simply transferring money.
It was transferring ownership of the entire Carter Family Trust.
And the document contained one final clause.
May you like
A clause that could make Vanessa legally responsible for every dollar that had disappeared from the children's charity.
*James looked at his ex-wife and realized that someone hadn't merely stolen her signature. Someone had designed an entire financial trap around it.*
