Chapter 8: The Secret Peter Left Behind

James didn't waste another second.

“Emily, get our attorneys on the phone. I want the bank's fraud department, the trust administrator, and the foundation's compliance director on one call.””

Emily nodded.

“Immediately.””

Vanessa sat down.

Her hands shook as she stared at the electronic confirmation.

“I swear I didn't authorize it.””

James crouched beside her chair.

“Look at me.””

She raised her eyes.

“I believe you. But we need to find out how someone generated that confirmation.””

“What if the bank doesn't believe me?””

“Then we'll show them the evidence.””

Vanessa looked at the screen.

“Richard has everything. My passwords. My personal information.

My old signatures. Even my private emails.””

James stood.

“Then we start by securing what he can access.””

He turned toward Emily.

“Freeze any joint accounts connected to the disputed transactions. Preserve every record. No one deletes anything.””

Emily made the calls.

Meanwhile, Michael opened his laptop.

“There's something else I haven't shown you.””

James looked at him.

“What?””

“Peter Lawson's original trust instructions.””

Michael brought up a scanned document.

The date was five years before Peter's death.

James recognized the letterhead.

It belonged to Lawson and Pierce, the law firm that had handled his father's estate.

“Where did you get this?””

“Daniel Price kept a copy in a restricted archive. He told me it was important.””

James read the first page.

Then he stopped.

His father's name appeared in the opening paragraph.

*THOMAS CARTER — ORIGINAL TRUST SETTLOR.*

James sat down.

His father had died when James was seventeen. He remembered him as a hardworking mechanic who spent weekends fixing neighbors' cars.

There had never been talk of an estate.

There had never been a family fortune.

At least, not one James knew about.

“What is this?”” Vanessa asked.

James continued reading.

The letter explained that Thomas Carter had owned a small industrial property before his death. The property had been sold to a development company, and the proceeds were placed into a private trust.

Over the years, the trust had acquired additional assets.

By the time Peter Lawson became its administrator, its value had grown substantially.

James looked up.

“My father never told me.””

Michael nodded.

“According to the records, he wanted the money protected until you were old enough to manage it.””

James kept reading.

Then he found the explanation for the Carter Family Trust.

Peter had divided the ownership into two portions.

One belonged to James.

The other was reserved for a person Peter believed James had wronged.

Vanessa.

James stared at the document.

“Why would Peter think I wronged her?””

Michael opened a second file.

“Because of the divorce.””

Vanessa frowned.

“Our divorce?””

Michael nodded.

“Peter believed the divorce agreement had been manipulated.””

James remembered the day.

He had signed the papers in a small attorney's office while Vanessa sat across from him.

He had been exhausted, broke, and emotionally shattered.

He had agreed to give her the apartment furniture, the car, and the savings he had left.

He had asked for nothing.

But Peter had been furious afterward.

He had told James that the divorce settlement was unfair.

James had refused to fight.

He had believed Vanessa deserved a fresh start.

Now he understood that Peter had been trying to protect something much larger.

“Why didn't Peter tell me?”” James asked.

Michael pointed to the final page.

“Because he believed someone was monitoring the trust.””

James read the handwritten note.

If James discovers the full value too early, the people who have been waiting for this money will approach him through someone he loves.

Vanessa slowly raised her head.

“That's exactly what happened.””

James looked at her.

“Yes.””

She covered her face.

“Richard knew.””

Michael nodded.

“Peter suspected Richard was connected to a network of financial intermediaries. He didn't have enough evidence to prove it.””

James turned another page.

There was a photograph attached.

Peter Lawson stood beside a younger Richard Whitmore.

They were shaking hands outside a Manhattan office building.

James stared.

“Richard knew Peter personally.””

Michael nodded.

“He wasn't merely an outside investor. He had been advising one of the companies managing the trust.””

Vanessa looked sick.

“He never told me.””

“Because he didn't want you asking questions,” James replied.

A knock interrupted them.

Helen entered.

“Mr. Carter, the bank has confirmed the second transfer is temporarily suspended.””

James stood.

“For how long?””

“Two hours. They're waiting for a court order.””

“Then we'll get one.””

Helen placed a second document on the table.

“There's another development. The bank received a complaint from someone claiming to be Vanessa Whitmore.””

Vanessa looked up.

“I didn't contact them.””

Helen nodded.

“The complaint stated that you voluntarily authorized both transfers and were attempting to withdraw your approval only because of a personal dispute with Mr. Carter.””

James frowned.

“Who submitted it?””

Helen opened the attached email.

The message had been sent from an account belonging to Richard's personal assistant.

Vanessa stood.

“His assistant?””

Helen nodded.

“Her name is Laura Bennett.””

Vanessa remembered her.

Laura had worked for Richard for four years. She had organized their social events, handled his travel arrangements, and occasionally brought documents to their home.

“She used to bring me paperwork,” Vanessa whispered.

James asked, “Could she have accessed Vanessa's electronic signatures?””

Helen nodded.

“If she had access to the executive office systems, potentially.””

Michael suddenly looked up.

“Laura was Daniel Price's assistant before she moved to Richard's office.””

James turned.

“Do you know where she is now?””

Michael checked his phone.

“She resigned this morning.””

“Where did she go?””

Michael looked at the message.

“Her employment record says she flew to London this afternoon.””

James's eyes narrowed.

“Does she have any connection to the Swiss beneficiary company?””

Michael opened another file.

Then he froze.

“Yes.””

He turned the laptop around.

Laura Bennett was listed as a director of the Swiss holding company.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“Richard's assistant owns the company receiving the money?””

“Not exactly,” Michael replied.

“She's listed as its nominee director.””

James leaned forward.

“Who is the actual beneficial owner?””

Michael hesitated.

The record showed a confidential trust arrangement.

But an attached correspondence file contained an older email.

James opened it.

The sender was Peter Lawson.

The recipient was Margaret Carter.

The subject line read:

*THE PERSON WHO MUST NEVER RECEIVE THE TRUST.*

James felt a chill.

He opened the message.

Peter had written that the trust's ultimate purpose was to protect James and Vanessa from a person who had been manipulating their family's finances for years.

The message ended with a single warning:

If Richard Whitmore ever gains control of the trust, do not trust the person who claims to be protecting James. The greatest threat is not the person asking for the money. It is the person who already knows where it is.

James read the sentence twice.

Then his phone rang.

It was his mother.

He answered immediately.

“Mom?””

Margaret was crying.

“James, I opened Peter's folder.””

His heart sank.

“Why?””

“Someone came to the house. He said he was from the bank. He knew my name. He knew about the folder.””

James stood.

“Did you give it to him?””

“No. I hid it.””

“Where?””

“In your father's old workshop.””

James closed his eyes.

“Are you safe?””

“I think so.””

“Mom, listen to me. Stay inside. Security is coming.””

She began crying harder.

“James, there's a photograph in the folder.””

“What photograph?””

“Your father, Peter, and another man.””

James gripped the phone.

“Who?””

Margaret's voice dropped.

“Richard Whitmore's father.””

James felt the blood drain from his face.

His father and Richard's father had known each other decades before Richard married Vanessa.

But his mother wasn't finished.

“There's a handwritten note on the back,” she whispered.

“What does it say?””

Margaret took a shaky breath.

“It says, 'The money was never the secret. The children were.''”

James went completely still.

“What children?””

May you like

His mother began to sob.

“James, I think Peter was trying to tell you that you have a brother.””
