Chapter 2: The Signature on the Report
Vanessa stared at the document.
Her signature was unmistakable.
The elegant V. The long underline beneath her surname.
She had signed thousands of documents during her marriage to Richard.
But she had never expected to see one in James Carter's hands.
“That's a misunderstanding,” she said quickly.
James didn't close the folder.
“Then explain it.””
Richard stepped between them.
“James, this isn't the appropriate place for an investigation.””
James looked at him.
“It's an appropriate place to discuss a $2.7 million transfer made in the name of children who never received the money.””
Several people nearby stopped talking.
Vanessa grabbed Richard's arm.
“Tell him.””
Richard glanced at the guests.
“Let's go to the private lounge.””
James nodded.
“Fine.””
He motioned to Emily.
“Bring the original audit package. And ask the compliance director to join us.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“You're making this unnecessarily complicated.””
“No,” James replied.
“Someone made it complicated when they moved the money.””
They entered a private conference room overlooking the city.
The door closed behind them.
Vanessa immediately turned toward James.
“Have you completely lost your mind? You walk into a charity gala, accuse me of stealing money, and expect everyone to believe you?””
James placed the folder on the table.
“I haven't accused you of anything yet.””
“Then why are you showing me my signature?””
“Because your signature is on an authorization that approved the transfer of funds intended for pediatric cancer treatment.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't remember signing that.””
Richard loosened his bow tie.
“It was probably one of the routine approvals.””
James looked at him.
“Routine approvals?””
Richard nodded.
“The foundation processes dozens of transactions every month. Vanessa is a board member. She signs administrative documents.””
James opened the folder again.
“This wasn't administrative.””
He slid a page across the table.
It showed three separate transfers.
- $900,000 to a medical supply contractor. - $850,000 to a children's rehabilitation program. - $950,000 to a regional hospital expansion fund.
All three transfers had been authorized on the same afternoon.
All three had gone to companies registered at the same business address.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“That's not possible.””
James pointed to the address.
“Do you recognize it?””
She shook her head.
Richard answered too quickly.
“Those are subsidiaries. The accounting department handles them.””
James looked at him.
“Then your accounting department has some explaining to do.””
Richard sat down.
“Let's not turn a bookkeeping issue into a scandal.””
James remained standing.
“Children were promised treatment. Some of those hospitals never received the money.””
Vanessa looked at her husband.
“Richard, what is he talking about?””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“It's an audit. Auditors find discrepancies. That's why we have accounting teams.””
James removed another page.
“This authorization was submitted under Vanessa's board credentials at 4:17 p.m. on March 12.””
Vanessa stared at the date.
“That day I was at the children's hospital fundraiser.””
“Were you?””
“Yes. I remember because my mother was there.””
James looked at her carefully.
“Did you personally authorize these payments?””
“I told you, I don't remember.””
Richard leaned forward.
“She didn't handle the actual transfers.””
James turned to him.
“Then who did?””
“Our finance director.””
“Name?””
“Daniel Price.””
James made a note.
“Good. We'll speak to him.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“You don't have the authority to interrogate my employees.””
James calmly closed the folder.
“Carter Global is the largest independent donor to the foundation's medical programs. We also fund two of the hospitals affected by these missing transfers.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You're involved in the foundation?””
“Not as a director. As a donor and independent financial partner.””
Richard scoffed.
“So this is a business opportunity for you?””
James looked genuinely disappointed.
“No, Richard. It's about children who were promised treatment.””
Emily entered with another folder.
“Mr. Carter, the compliance director is on the phone. She has confirmed the authorization records.””
“Put her on speaker.””
A woman's voice filled the room.
“Good evening. This is Helen Morris, independent compliance director.””
James asked, “Helen, did you verify the signature?””
“Yes. The electronic authorization was submitted using Mrs. Whitmore's account.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“That's not proof I did it.””
Helen continued.
“There is another issue. The authorization was processed using a security token assigned to the foundation's executive office.””
Richard sat upright.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the transaction required both a board-level approval and an executive-office verification.””
James slowly looked at Richard.
Vanessa noticed.
“Why are you looking at my husband?””
James didn't answer immediately.
Helen continued.
“The executive verification token was registered to Mr. Richard Whitmore.””
The room became silent.
Richard stood.
“That proves nothing. My office handles hundreds of transactions.””
James nodded.
“That's possible.””
Richard seemed relieved.
Then James asked another question.
“Helen, did the funds reach the named medical facilities?””
“No.””
“Where did they go?””
There was a pause.
“Two payments went to an investment management company. The third went to an offshore account linked to a holding structure.””
Vanessa looked sick.
“Richard?””
He raised both hands.
“Don't look at me like that. I had nothing to do with the accounting.””
James turned toward Helen.
“Can you identify the beneficial owner?””
“Not from the initial report. But we found a related-party connection.””
“What connection?””
Helen hesitated.
“The investment company was incorporated by a person who previously served as a financial consultant to Whitmore Financial Group.””
Richard's face lost its color.
Vanessa whispered, “Who?””
James looked at the final page.
“Marcus Bell.””
Richard immediately stood.
“Marcus was a consultant. He hasn't worked with us in years.””
James looked up.
“That's interesting.””
“What?””
“Because the company records show Marcus still receives quarterly management fees from an entity controlled by Whitmore Financial.””
Richard slammed his palm against the table.
“This is ridiculous!””
Vanessa flinched.
James didn't.
“Then you'll have no problem providing the records.””
Richard pointed at him.
“You're trying to destroy my company.””
“No. I'm trying to find out where the money went.””
Vanessa stared at her husband.
“Richard, you told me the foundation was doing wonderful work. You told me those transfers were funding children's hospitals.””
“They were supposed to.””
“Then why is the money missing?””
Richard looked at her.
For the first time, Vanessa saw something she had never noticed in their marriage.
Fear.
Not embarrassment.
Not frustration.
Fear.
James gathered the documents.
“I'm suspending any further charitable transfers through the disputed accounts until the audit is complete.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You can't do that.””
“I can suspend Carter Global's funding commitments while we investigate. And I will.””
Vanessa looked at James.
“Why are you doing this?””
He met her eyes.
“Because six years ago, I couldn't afford to help a child who needed surgery.””
Her expression changed.
James continued quietly.
“I remember exactly what that felt like.””
He turned toward the door.
But before he could leave, Helen's voice came through the speaker again.
“Mr. Carter, there's one more thing.””
James stopped.
“What?””
“We recovered the original authorization history. The document Mrs. Whitmore signed wasn't the first version.””
James turned back.
“Explain.””
“The original authorization was submitted under a different name. It was changed after the transfer request was rejected.””
Vanessa looked at Richard.
Richard stared at the floor.
James asked, “Whose name was on the original version?””
May you like
Helen answered.
“Richard Whitmore.””
