Chapter 8: The Envelope She Hid

Nobody spoke after the video ended.

The image stayed frozen on my dad’s phone.

Tara standing at the door.

Lucas standing outside.

An envelope passing from her hand to his.

It was the kind of moment that didn’t need an explanation.

But somehow, everyone still wanted one.

My dad slowly lowered the phone.

“Tara.””

She looked at him.

“Michael…”

“What was in the envelope?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

My dad’s voice hardened.

“What was in the envelope?””

“I can explain.””

I almost smiled.

There it was again.

The same sentence.

The same excuse.

Only this time, there was a video.

“There is nothing to explain,” I said.

Tara looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

“You think I betrayed you.””

“You lied to me.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

My dad laughed bitterly.

“By secretly giving money to Lucas?””

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

“With what?””

Silence.

That silence answered the question.

My dad stepped back.

“Tara.””

She sat down.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

He pointed toward the phone.

“You met with someone who tried to manipulate my daughter.””

“I didn’t know his plan.””

“Then why hide it?””

She looked down.

Because she knew.

Because there was no answer that would make it better.

I crossed my arms.

“Tell us everything.””

She looked at me.

I had never seen her look so small.

Finally, she spoke.

“Lucas came to me because he said he was worried about you.””

I almost laughed.

“Worried about me?””

“He told me you were angry. That you blamed yourself for what happened between you two.””

My jaw tightened.

“What happened between us was his fault.””

“I know that now.””

“No. You don’t.””

She looked away.

“I thought he wanted to help.””

“And the money?””

Her hands twisted together.

“He said he had a problem.””

“What problem?””

“He owed someone money.””

My dad stared at her.

“So you gave him ours?””

“I was going to replace it.””

“With what?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Because she didn’t have a plan.

She just hoped everything would disappear.

My dad walked toward the window.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then he asked:

“Did Lucas tell you to accuse Emma?””

Tara’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

And so did my dad.

“Tara.””

She looked down.

“He suggested that maybe Emma had taken the money.””

My chest tightened.

“He suggested it?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

“And you believed him.””

“I was scared.””

I stepped forward.

“You weren’t scared. You were looking for someone to blame.””

She started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

But this time, even her tears couldn’t fix it.

My dad took a deep breath.

“Where is the envelope?””

Tara looked confused.

“What?””

“The envelope you gave him.””

Her face went pale.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

My dad looked at the screen again.

“Then we find out.””

A few minutes later, my dad called the police.

Not because of the fifty dollars.

Not even because of the missing money.

Because someone had been entering our home, manipulating people, and using my family’s trust as a weapon.

That night, while we waited, I sat in my room.

My door was open.

For the first time in days, I didn’t feel like I was being watched.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me not to.

I opened the message.

It was from Lucas.

There was only one sentence.

*“Your stepmother isn’t the person you should be angry at.””*

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

This time, it wasn’t of Tara.

It was of me.

May you like

Taken inside my bedroom.

While I was sleeping.
