Chapter 15: The Night My Mother Disappeared

The room felt frozen.

Nobody wanted to ask the question.

Because everyone already knew the answer would change everything.

I looked at Rachel.

“Who were you running from?””

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked exactly like the mother from my childhood memories.

The woman who used to sing while cooking.

The woman who held me when storms scared me.

The woman who disappeared without goodbye.

Then she opened her eyes.

And I saw the fear.

“I was running from your grandfather.””

My dad returned through the back door just in time to hear it.

He stopped.

“What?””

Rachel looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, you need to explain.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“The night everyone thought I died, I found out your father had been planning to take control of Emma’s inheritance.””

My dad looked confused.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does when you know what he was willing to do.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened that night?””

Rachel looked at me.

“I was driving home with you.””

My breath caught.

I had been too young to remember.

But suddenly, pieces of memories appeared.

A dark road.

Rain.

My mother crying.

Rachel continued.

“You were four years old. You were asleep in the back seat.””

I swallowed.

“What happened?””

“I received a phone call.””

“From who?””

“Your grandfather.””

The room became silent.

“He told me if I didn’t disappear, Emma would never be safe.””

My dad looked horrified.

“He threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because he threatened you too.””

My dad went quiet.

“He said if I went to the police, he would destroy your life.””

I looked at the folder.

The inheritance.

The secrets.

The lies.

Everything connected.

Rachel continued.

“I disappeared because I thought staying away would protect you.””

I shook my head.

“But it hurt me.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

“And Dad?””

She looked at him.

“I knew Michael would raise you better than anyone.””

My dad looked away.

The pain on his face was impossible to miss.

“I spent years believing you were dead.””

“I know.””

“I buried my wife.””

Rachel whispered:

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then Daniel looked at the documents.

“There’s still one question.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Why now?””

Rachel frowned.

“What?””

“Why did Lucas suddenly start this plan now?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Because that was the question.

Why wait until now?

Why not years ago?

Daniel looked at me.

“Your twenty-first birthday is in three months.””

The answer hit me.

The inheritance.

The control.

The deadline.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t Lucas.

It was a message from the bank.

A notification.

I opened it.

And my blood went cold.

Someone had attempted to transfer my inheritance.

I looked at my dad.

“I think someone just tried to steal my money.””

He took my phone.

His face changed.

“Emma…”

“What?””

He handed it back.

The transaction request showed the person who authorized it.

Not Lucas.

Not Tara.

Not my grandfather.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been helping us uncover the truth.

Someone standing in the room.

May you like

And the name on the screen was:

*Daniel Carter.*
