Chapter 13: The Truth About My Father

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The sentence hung in the air like something too heavy for anyone to carry.

“Michael isn’t Emma’s biological father.””

I looked at my dad.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who stayed up all night when I had a fever.

The man who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.

My father.

Or at least, the person I had always believed was my father.

My voice came out small.

“What did you say?””

Rachel looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, you don’t get to say that and then just stand there.””

My dad stepped forward.

“Rachel…”

She looked at him.

“I tried to tell you.””

His face hardened.

“When?””

“When Emma was born.””

The room went silent.

My entire body felt numb.

Daniel looked away.

Like even he knew this was a wound too deep to touch.

I turned toward my dad.

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer.

That was all the answer I needed.

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

He closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“You knew?””

His voice broke.

“Yes.””

The pain was worse than anger.

Because I wasn’t looking at a stranger.

I was looking at the man I called Dad.

The man who knew the truth and let me live inside a lie.

“For how long?””

“Since before you were born.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t understand.””

Rachel walked closer.

“When I was pregnant with you, I found out the man I was with before Michael was your biological father.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

And somehow, that hesitation scared me more than anything.

“Your grandfather knew.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Rachel nodded.

“He knew your biological father had a connection to the inheritance.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Your grandfather cared about the money more than anything.””

I looked at the documents.

“So this was never just about my mother’s inheritance.””

“No,” Rachel said.

“It was about who you were connected to.””

My dad sat down.

His hands were shaking.

“I loved you from the moment I held you.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That I would lose you.””

The honesty in his voice almost broke me.

But it didn’t erase the secret.

Rachel looked down.

“Michael became your father in every way that mattered.””

I swallowed.

“But not biologically.””

“No.””

The word hurt.

A million questions rushed through my head.

Who was my real father?

Why had everyone hidden this?

Why had Lucas known?

And why was someone trying so hard to control my life?

My dad looked at Rachel.

“Who is he?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“His name was Adrian.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You’re sure?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

My dad looked confused.

“Why does that name matter?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because Adrian wasn’t just anyone.””

I turned.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Adrian was your grandfather’s biggest enemy.””

The room went cold.

My dad stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“It’s the reason everything happened.””

Rachel nodded.

“Your grandfather built his entire plan around controlling the inheritance because he believed Adrian’s family would eventually try to claim it.””

I felt overwhelmed.

“So my entire life…”

“Was shaped by a fight you didn’t even know existed,” Rachel said.

I looked at her.

“And you left me because of it?””

Her eyes filled.

“I left because someone tried to hurt you.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the folder.

“The person who has been helping Lucas.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Tara.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Tara’s face turned pale.

“No.””

Rachel’s voice was quiet.

“You know who.””

Tara stepped back.

“I don’t.””

Rachel looked at her.

“You gave him access.””

My dad stood.

“Tara?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

But Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out another piece of paper.

“I found this in Lucas’s apartment.””

She handed it to my dad.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at me.

“It’s proof that Lucas wasn’t working alone.””

My dad looked at the paper again.

At the signature.

Then slowly lifted his eyes toward Tara.

May you like

Because the person who signed the agreement with Lucas…

Was someone we had trusted completely.
