Chapter 19: The Truth Behind Every Lie

I stared at the man standing in front of me.

The stranger who shared my eyes.

The stranger who carried the same small scar above his eyebrow that I had seen in old family photos.

The stranger who claimed to be my father.

“I don’t know you.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Pain.

“I know.””

I shook my head.

“No. You don’t get to walk into my life after twenty years and say you’re my father.””

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

Victor watched silently from the corner.

I looked at him.

“Was this your plan?””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why bring me here?””

“Because you needed to hear the truth from him.””

I turned back to Adrian.

“Start talking.””

He nodded slowly.

“I was never supposed to leave.””

The room was quiet.

“Then why did you?””

Adrian looked at the floor.

“Because your grandfather made sure I had no choice.””

I frowned.

“Everyone blames my grandfather.””

“Because he was responsible.””

“Then why didn’t you fight?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I did.””

He took a breath.

“But fighting him put you in danger.””

I crossed my arms.

“That’s what everyone says.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Protecting me meant disappearing?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Protecting you meant making sure he could never find you.””

I stared at him.

“Find me?””

Adrian nodded.

“Your grandfather knew about my company. He knew about the trust. He knew that if you inherited everything, you would have control over something he spent his entire life trying to own.””

“What?””

“Evidence.””

The word surprised me.

“Evidence of what?””

Adrian looked at Victor.

Victor answered.

“Your grandfather built his fortune through illegal deals. Adrian discovered it.””

I looked between them.

“So my inheritance…”

“Was never just money,” Adrian said.

“It was protection.””

He explained everything.

Years ago, Adrian had uncovered financial records showing that my grandfather had hidden millions through fake companies and illegal transfers.

Rachel discovered it too.

That was why they became targets.

That was why my grandfather tried to control the inheritance.

Because inside that inheritance was a digital archive.

A record of everything.

“Your mother hid the archive inside the trust,” Adrian said.

“And Lucas?””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“He found out.””

“So he used Tara.””

“Yes.””

I thought about everything.

The missing fifty dollars.

The accusations.

The searches.

The lies.

All of it had been a distraction.

A way to push me out before I turned twenty-one.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because I wasn’t sure who I could trust.””

I laughed quietly.

“Neither was I.””

The silence between us was painful.

Then my phone rang.

Dad.

I answered.

“Dad?””

His voice was urgent.

“Emma, listen carefully.””

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

“Daniel found Victor’s real plan.””

I looked at Victor.

“What plan?””

My dad hesitated.

“Victor wasn’t trying to steal your inheritance.””

My heart stopped.

“Then what?””

“He was trying to expose who was behind everything.””

I looked at Victor.

“Why?””

My dad continued.

“Because the person controlling Lucas…”

A pause.

“Wasn’t Victor.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

Then Victor.

“Who was it?””

My dad’s voice lowered.

“It was someone who had access to every document.””

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who knew the inheritance.

Someone who had been there from the beginning.

My heart started pounding.

“Dad…”

“I found the original files.””

“Where?””

“In Tara’s old account.””

I froze.

“What?””

My dad continued.

“She wasn’t working with Lucas.””

I exhaled.

“Then what?””

“She was being used.””

A terrible feeling moved through me.

“By who?””

The line went quiet.

Then my dad said:

“Emma…”

His voice broke.

“The person who started this was someone your mother trusted.””

I looked at Adrian.

At Victor.

At the documents.

And suddenly, I remembered something.

A name that had appeared again and again.

A name everyone blamed.

A name everyone feared.

But never questioned.

My grandfather.

Except my grandfather had been dead.

So someone else had been continuing his work.

Someone alive.

Someone close.

My dad whispered:

“It was Rachel’s closest friend.””

I froze.

“My mom’s friend?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

My dad answered.

And when I heard the name…

Everything finally made sense.

Because she had been in our lives for years.

She had comforted me.

She had helped raise me.

She had stood beside my family.

And she had been hiding the truth the entire time.

May you like

Her name was:

Tara’s mother.
