Chapter 10: The Inheritance Nobody Mentioned

The folder felt heavier than it should have.

It was just paper.

A few documents.

A few old records.

But as my dad held it in his hands, I could see the fear on his face.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Dad,” I said quietly.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes moved across the page again.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Michael, you need to tell her.””

My dad looked up.

“I was trying to protect her.””

My heart sank.

That sentence never meant anything good.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody spoke.

Even Tara looked uncomfortable.

I reached for the folder.

My dad hesitated.

Then he handed it to me.

The first page was a legal document.

At the top were the words:

*Estate Transfer Agreement.*

My eyes moved down the page.

My mother’s name was there.

Rachel Carter.

My breath caught.

I hadn’t seen her signature in years.

Below it was a list of assets.

A house.

A savings account.

A trust fund.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Daniel answered.

“Your mother left something for you.””

I frowned.

“She died when I was a kid.””

“Yes.””

“So why am I only seeing this now?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

I looked at my dad.

“You knew?””

His silence hurt more than anything.

“You knew.””

He sat down slowly.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“How long?””

He looked away.

“Since you turned eighteen.””

The room felt like it tilted.

Three years.

He had known for three years.

I looked at Tara.

“And she knew too?””

Tara’s eyes filled with guilt.

“I found out recently.””

“Recently?””

She nodded.

“Lucas found the information.””

Daniel scoffed.

“Of course he did.””

I turned toward him.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your mother’s inheritance was protected until you were twenty-one. Your father was named temporary manager of the account.””

I looked at my dad.

“So it was mine?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

His face fell.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt worse than a lie.

Daniel continued.

“Lucas discovered the inheritance when he was looking through old records.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he be looking through my records?””

“Because someone told him about it.””

Everyone looked at Tara.

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t get to pretend you had nothing to do with this.””

My dad stood.

“Daniel, be careful.””

“No, Michael. She needs the truth.””

Tara’s eyes filled with anger.

“I made mistakes, but I did not plan this.””

Daniel nodded.

“Maybe not at first.””

That sentence made everyone stop.

“What does that mean?”” my dad asked.

Daniel looked at the folder.

“It means Lucas wasn’t only after money.””

I stared.

“Then what was he after?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You.””

The word made my skin crawl.

“What?””

“He needed you gone before you turned twenty-one.””

My dad’s face changed.

“Why?””

Daniel pointed to the documents.

“Because once Emma turns twenty-one, control of the trust transfers completely to her.””

I read the page again.

There it was.

My birthday.

The date when everything became mine.

My voice came out quietly.

“So if I disappeared…”

“They would need someone else to access the money,” Daniel said.

My stomach turned.

Someone else.

Someone like my father.

Someone who could be manipulated.

Someone like Tara.

My dad looked sick.

“I never touched that money.””

“I know,” Daniel said.

I looked at him.

“Then why hide it?””

My dad closed his eyes.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

I froze.

“What promise?””

He looked at the photograph of my mother sitting on the shelf.

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

His voice became quiet.

“She was afraid someone in the family would try to take it from you.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Tara.

Then my dad.

Then Daniel.

“Someone in the family?””

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel said:

“Your mother wasn’t talking about strangers.””

A chill ran through me.

“Who was she talking about?””

Daniel looked at my father.

And my father whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

I stared.

“My grandfather?””

The man I barely remembered?

The man who had been dead for years?

Daniel nodded.

“He knew about the inheritance.””

My hands tightened around the papers.

“But he’s gone.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does this matter?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because before he died, he made one final change.””

My dad looked confused.

“What change?””

Daniel pulled out another document.

“One that gave someone else a reason to come after you.””

He placed it on the table.

At the bottom was a signature.

And when I saw the name…

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Because it wasn’t Lucas.

It wasn’t Tara.

May you like

It wasn’t even someone I knew.

It was my own father’s signature.
