Chapter 14: The Betrayal Inside Our Home

My dad held the paper like it was something dangerous.

Maybe it was.

Because sometimes the truth can hurt more than any lie.

“Tara.””

She looked at him.

“Michael, I can explain.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence had become the soundtrack of our nightmare.

Everyone had an explanation.

Nobody had an answer.

My dad placed the paper on the table.

“Your signature is here.””

Tara looked down.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You signed a contract.””

“I thought it was about helping Emma.””

I stared at her.

“Helping me?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

“No.””

My voice was steady now.

“You were helping yourself.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

“You made choices.””

Rachel watched quietly.

Then she said:

“Tell them what Lucas promised you.””

Tara froze.

My dad turned.

“Promised her what?””

Tara looked away.

That was the moment I knew.

There was still more.

“There was supposed to be money,” Rachel said.

My dad looked at Tara.

“Money?””

Tara whispered:

“He said I would be compensated.””

The room went silent.

My dad looked devastated.

Not angry.

Devastated.

“How much?””

She didn’t answer.

“How much, Tara?””

“Fifty thousand.””

The number hit harder than I expected.

My dad stepped back.

“You were willing to betray Emma for fifty thousand dollars?””

“No.””

Tara shook her head.

“That’s not how it started.””

“Then how did it start?””

She wiped her face.

“When Lucas first came to me, he showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“He showed me proof that Emma’s inheritance was bigger than anyone knew.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed him.””

“I was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stared at her.

“But nobody was scared for me.””

The words made her cry.

But I wasn’t finished.

“You searched my room.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“You accused me.””

“I know.””

“You tried to make Dad throw me out.””

“I know.””

My voice broke.

“And you still expect me to believe you were helping me?””

She looked down.

“No.””

For the first time, she admitted it.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just shame.

My dad walked away from the table.

“I need air.””

He left through the back door.

I watched him go.

A part of me wanted to follow.

Another part of me needed answers.

Rachel sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I don’t know what else to say.””

“You could have come back.””

Her eyes filled.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

She looked toward Daniel.

“Because someone intercepted my messages.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your grandfather’s lawyer.””

I frowned.

“He’s dead too.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then who?””

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emma.””

I knew that voice.

Lucas.

My grip tightened.

“What do you want?””

He laughed quietly.

“I want you to stop listening to them.””

I looked around the room.

“Why?””

“Because they’re all lying.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You’re the one who broke into my room.””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

Then Lucas said:

“Ask your mother what happened the night she disappeared.””

Rachel went completely still.

My heart raced.

“What are you talking about?””

Lucas continued.

“The night your mother vanished wasn’t an accident.””

I looked at Rachel.

She looked terrified.

“Lucas…”

His voice lowered.

“She wasn’t running away from danger.””

A pause.

“She was running from someone inside your family.””

The call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Everyone looked at Rachel.

May you like

Because there was only one person who could answer.

My mother.
