Chapter 8: The Secret My Mother Buried
Daniel left before I could stop him.
He didn't threaten us.
He didn't yell.
He simply walked away.
And somehow, that was worse.
People who are scared make noise.
People who are confident don't need to.
My mother and I sat on a bench near the river.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, I asked the question that had been haunting me since I was a child.
"Why did you leave?""
She closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I knew this day would come.""
"That doesn't answer me.""
"I didn't leave because I wanted to.""
"Then why?""
She reached into her bag again.
This time, she pulled out a small notebook.
"I wrote everything down because I knew nobody would believe me.""
She opened it.
The pages were filled with dates.
Names.
Details.
"I was preparing to expose Nicole and Daniel.""
"For stealing money?""
She nodded.
"But there was more.""
"What more?""
My mother looked at me.
"They were using the law office to manipulate custody cases.""
I felt sick.
"They helped people disappear from their children's lives.""
My fingers went cold.
"Mom...""
"Nicole knew exactly how to make someone look unstable.""
The pieces started connecting.
The fake messages.
The rumors.
The lies.
"But why didn't you fight?""
"I did.""
Her voice cracked.
"I fought for you.""
She looked down.
"Then one night, I was driving home, and someone followed me.""
I stopped breathing.
"What happened?""
"I crashed.""
"Was it an accident?""
She looked at me.
"No.""
The world went quiet.
"Someone cut my brakes.""
My hand covered my mouth.
"Who?""
"I never proved it.""
"But you suspected Nicole.""
"I suspected everyone.""
She looked toward the river.
"After the crash, I was in the hospital. Your father came to see me.""
My heart tightened.
"What did he say?""
Her eyes filled with pain.
"He told me if I kept fighting, they would make sure I never saw you again.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"He was scared.""
"You keep saying that.""
"Because it's true.""
She touched my hand.
"Your father loved you.""
I pulled away.
"Then why did he let me think you abandoned me?""
She had no answer.
That hurt more.
A few minutes later, my phone rang.
Dad.
I almost didn't answer.
But I did.
"Emma.""
His voice sounded exhausted.
"Where are you?""
"With Mom.""
Silence.
Then:
"She found you.""
It wasn't a question.
"You knew?""
"No.""
"Stop lying to me.""
I heard him breathe.
"Please come home.""
"Why?""
"Because Nicole is gone.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She left a message.""
My heart started racing.
"What message?""
Dad hesitated.
Then he said:
"She said she was done protecting me.""
I looked at my mother.
She looked just as confused.
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"We're coming.""
"No.""
My father's voice sharpened.
"Emma, listen to me.""
The urgency scared me.
"You don't understand what Nicole has.""
"What does she have?""
A long pause.
Then my father whispered:
"The original custody agreement.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"What?""
"The one that proves everything.""
My mother stood immediately.
"Marcus still has it?""
Dad continued.
"If Nicole releases that document, everyone will know.""
"Know what?""
His voice broke.
"That I helped her.""
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
My mother looked at me.
"Your father finally admitted it.""
I nodded slowly.
But something didn't feel right.
Because Nicole didn't run away.
She didn't hide.
She left because she wanted us to find something.
And if she had the original custody agreement...
May you like
Then maybe she wasn't trying to escape.
Maybe she was setting a trap.
