Chapter 19: The Last Lie

I couldn't move.

The confession sat in my hands, but it felt heavier than paper.

It felt like twelve years of unanswered questions.

Like every birthday without my mother.

Every night I wondered why she left.

Every moment I felt unwanted.

All of it was trapped inside those pages.

My father stared at the folder.

"No.""

It was barely a whisper.

I looked at him.

"You knew.""

His face collapsed.

"Emma, listen to me.""

"No.""

My voice shook.

"I listened my entire life.""

The room went silent.

"I listened when Nicole told me my mother abandoned me.""

I looked at Nicole.

"I listened when you told me you were protecting me.""

Then I looked at Marcus.

"I listened when you said you were scared.""

My eyes filled with tears.

"But nobody listened to me.""

My father looked broken.

"I was wrong.""

"That doesn't explain this.""

I held up the confession.

"Why is your name here?""

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he sat down.

"I need to tell you what happened.""

Adrian stepped forward.

"Marcus.""

"No.""

My father looked at him.

"She deserves the truth from me.""

Nobody interrupted.

Not even my mother.

"I didn't start this.""

I almost laughed.

"That sounds like another excuse.""

"I know.""

He looked at the floor.

"But it's the truth.""

He took a deep breath.

"When Daniel approached me, I thought he was helping me.""

"Helping you do what?""

"Protect you.""

I stared.

"From what?""

"From losing everything.""

He looked at my mother.

"Your mother wanted to expose Daniel.""

She nodded.

"Because he was guilty.""

"I know that now.""

My father continued.

"But back then, Daniel showed me documents.""

"What documents?""

"Fake ones.""

He swallowed.

"They showed your mother planning to leave with you.""

My mother's face hardened.

"Those were fake.""

"Yes.""

"And you believed them.""

"I was scared.""

I looked away.

The words hurt because they were true.

Fear had destroyed my family more than hatred ever could.

"What did you do?""

My father looked at the confession.

"I signed a statement.""

My heart dropped.

"What kind of statement?""

"One saying I believed your mother was unstable.""

My mother closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was impossible to watch.

"But you knew it wasn't true.""

He nodded.

"Later, yes.""

"Later?""

He looked at me.

"I found out after Daniel used it in court.""

The room went cold.

"You let him use a lie.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Because I was ashamed.""

The honesty hurt.

"Shame doesn't fix anything.""

"I know.""

He looked at me.

"That's why I deserve whatever happens.""

The officer standing nearby stepped forward.

"Mr. Marcus Hill, this confession has been verified as evidence.""

My father nodded.

"I understand.""

But before anyone moved, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then Daniel's voice came through.

"You found it.""

I tightened my grip.

"You're finished.""

He laughed softly.

"No.""

"Yes.""

"You still don't understand.""

I looked around the room.

Everyone was watching me.

"What don't I understand?""

A pause.

Then:

"The confession isn't mine.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

"I wrote it.""

Silence.

"But I didn't sign it.""

My eyes moved to the page.

The signature.

The evidence.

The name.

"What are you saying?""

Daniel's voice lowered.

"I'm saying someone wanted you to blame Marcus.""

Everyone froze.

My father looked at me.

Daniel continued.

"The person who has been controlling this entire story isn't me.""

My mother whispered:

"No.""

I knew that voice.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Who?""

Daniel laughed.

"Ask your mother why she never told you the truth about your grandfather.""

My heart stopped.

"What does my grandfather have to do with this?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he said:

"The person you trust most has been protecting the biggest secret.""

The call ended.

I looked at my mother.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't confused.

She looked terrified.

"Mom?""

She slowly sat down.

"I didn't want you to know.""

My stomach tightened.

"Know what?""

She looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

"The truth about your grandfather.""

I waited.

And finally, after twenty years of secrets...

She said:

"Your grandfather wasn't Daniel's victim.""

May you like

Everyone went silent.

"He was Daniel's partner.""
