Chapter 1: The Slap That Changed Everything

My stepmother always told people she was the woman who saved our family.

She never told them she was also the person who made me feel like a stranger in my own home.

The day she slapped me, I realized something I would never forget: sometimes the person screaming the loudest about the truth is the one trying hardest to hide it.

The kitchen smelled like burnt coffee and the lemon cleaner Nicole used every Sunday. I had just walked through the front door when I heard her voice.

Sharp.

Accusing.

Waiting.

"Emma, get in here right now!"" Nicole shouted.

I froze near the hallway.

There was something in her tone that made my stomach tighten.

I stepped into the kitchen and saw her standing beside the counter, holding my little sister Lily's cracked tablet.

Or what looked like a cracked tablet.

Nicole held it up like it was evidence in a courtroom.

"Explain this," she said.

I stared at the broken screen.

"What happened?""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Don't pretend you don't know.""

"I don't," I said quickly.

"I just got home.""

Nicole laughed without humor.

"Of course you did. Somehow you are always innocent.""

My chest tightened.

"I didn't touch Lily's tablet.""

"Emma.""

Her voice dropped into a warning.

"I am tired of you lying to me.""

"I am not lying.""

The next second happened so fast that my brain couldn't understand it.

Her hand moved.

The sound echoed through the kitchen.

My cheek burned.

For a moment, everything went silent.

I stood there frozen, my hand slowly moving to my face.

Nicole glared at me.

"You broke her tablet and then lied straight to my face," she said.

Tears filled my eyes.

"I wasn't even home today.""

She didn't care.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"Yes, because it's the truth.""

Nicole stepped closer.

"You have always hated seeing Lily get something nice.""

That hurt more than the slap.

Because it wasn't true.

Lily was my little sister. My dad's daughter with Nicole. I had spent years trying to make her feel loved, even when Nicole made it clear I wasn't really part of their perfect little family.

"I would never break her things," I whispered.

Nicole lifted her hand again.

This time, fear replaced my shock.

Then a voice stopped her.

"What the hell is going on here?""

Dad.

Marcus stood in the doorway, still wearing his work jacket. His face changed the moment he saw me.

He saw my red cheek.

He saw Nicole's raised hand.

And his expression turned cold.

Nicole immediately lowered her arm.

"Marcus," she said, suddenly sounding fragile.

"She broke Lily's tablet and refused to admit it.""

My dad looked at me.

"Emma?""

"I didn't do it.""

My voice cracked.

"I swear.""

Nicole crossed her arms.

"She always says that.""

Dad looked between us.

His jaw tightened.

Before he could answer, soft footsteps came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Lily stood there.

She was holding something behind her back.

She looked smaller than usual, but her eyes were different.

Not scared.

Disappointed.

She stared at her mother.

"Mom," Lily said quietly.

Nicole's face softened.

"Lily, honey, go back upstairs.""

But Lily didn't move.

"Stop lying.""

The kitchen went completely silent.

Nicole blinked.

"What did you say?""

Lily slowly brought her hand forward.

She was holding her phone.

"I saw everything.""

Nicole's face changed.

For the first time all day, she looked afraid.

Dad took one step toward Lily.

"What did you see?""

Lily looked at me.

Then she looked back at her mother.

"I saw who really broke my tablet.""

Nicole's lips parted.

"Lily, don't—"

But Lily pressed a button on the phone.

A video appeared on the screen.

And the first thing we heard was Nicole's own voice saying something that made my dad's face turn white.
