Chapter 17: The Man Who Came Back

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The man standing in the doorway looked at me like he had been waiting years for this moment.

And maybe he had.

My mother walked forward slowly.

Her hands were shaking.

"You're alive.""

Adrian looked at her.

"I'm sorry.""

Those two words broke something in her.

She slapped his chest weakly.

"You let me believe you were dead.""

He didn't defend himself.

"I know.""

"You let me raise our daughter alone.""

"I know.""

"You let me search for you.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

I watched them.

Two people who had loved each other.

Two people who had lost years.

And somehow, I was standing in the middle of their unfinished story.

I looked at him.

"Are you my father?""

He turned toward me.

The question seemed to hurt him.

"Yes.""

My heart raced.

"Then where were you?""

Everyone became silent.

Adrian took a breath.

"I was trying to bring Daniel down.""

I shook my head.

"That's not an answer.""

He nodded.

"You deserve the full truth.""

He walked into the room.

"I discovered Daniel was involved in a network that used legal documents to control people's lives.""

My mother crossed her arms.

"Like custody cases.""

"Yes.""

"And you thought disappearing was the solution?""

Adrian looked away.

"I thought if Daniel believed I was gone, he would stop looking for me.""

"But he didn't.""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"He found another way.""

I thought about Nicole.

My father.

The lies.

"Why didn't you find me?""

His face broke.

"I tried.""

"Everyone says that.""

"I did.""

"Then why?""

He looked at Marcus.

And suddenly, everyone became tense.

"Because someone stopped me.""

My father closed his eyes.

My heart dropped.

"Marcus?""

Adrian nodded.

"No.""

Everyone looked confused.

"Then who?""

Adrian looked toward Nicole.

Her face went pale.

"What?""

"I didn't know at first.""

He pulled out a folder.

"I found records.""

Nicole stepped back.

"Adrian...""

"Don't.""

His voice was quiet.

"You knew where she was.""

My mother looked at Nicole.

"What is he talking about?""

Adrian opened the folder.

"After the crash, Nicole didn't just hide your location.""

Nicole started crying.

"I was protecting you.""

"No.""

Adrian shook his head.

"You were protecting yourself.""

I stared at Nicole.

"What did you do?""

She looked at me.

"I kept your mother hidden because Daniel told me he would destroy Lily if I helped anyone.""

The room went still.

Again.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had fear.

But the damage was still real.

Adrian continued.

"Nicole contacted me years later.""

My mother looked shocked.

"You knew?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you come back?""

Adrian looked destroyed.

"Because Daniel had proof that Marcus had signed documents making him legally responsible for everything.""

My father whispered:

"He threatened us.""

Adrian nodded.

"He knew if the truth came out, Marcus would lose everything.""

I looked at my father.

"You let me hate my mother to protect yourself.""

His eyes filled.

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt.

But it was finally honesty.

Then Adrian pulled out another document.

"This is why Daniel was really afraid.""

I took it.

At the top was a name.

Not mine.

Not my mother's.

A company name.

"What is this?""

"The organization Daniel worked for.""

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?""

Adrian looked at me.

"Because your mother discovered something.""

"What?""

He hesitated.

Then said:

"When you were born, Daniel changed your birth records.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

My mother looked confused.

"Why?""

Adrian looked at me.

"Because he needed to hide who your real father was.""

I stared.

"But you said you are my father.""

"I am.""

"Then why change it?""

Adrian's expression became serious.

"Because Daniel knew your bloodline mattered.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian opened another file.

Inside was an old photo.

A photo of a man.

A man I had never met.

But recognized immediately.

Because he looked exactly like me.

"This is your grandfather.""

I looked at the picture.

"Why does Daniel care about my family?""

Adrian looked at me.

"Because your grandfather left behind something Daniel wanted.""

"What?""

Adrian's voice dropped.

"The evidence that could destroy him.""

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*Now you know who your father is. Next, you’ll learn why I needed you.*
