Chapter 2: The Video She Never Expected
The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.
The ticking clock above the refrigerator sounded louder than it ever had before.
Nicole stared at Lily's phone like it was a weapon pointed directly at her.
"Lily," she said softly, forcing a smile, "you don't understand what you're doing.""
My little sister shook her head.
"I understand.""
That single sentence changed everything.
Dad reached for the phone.
"Lily, give me that.""
She handed it over.
The video started playing.
It showed our living room from the angle of the small security camera Dad installed months earlier after someone left the front door open.
At first, nobody spoke.
Then Nicole walked into the frame.
She was carrying Lily's tablet.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew.
I knew before the video even showed what happened.
Nicole sat on the couch, looked around the empty room, and slammed the tablet against the coffee table.
Once.
Twice.
The screen shattered.
Dad's expression changed.
Nicole immediately reached for the phone.
"Marcus, wait. There's an explanation.""
But he stepped back.
"No.""
His voice was quiet.
And somehow, that was worse than yelling.
The video continued.
Nicole looked directly at the camera.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"Maybe now Marcus will finally understand that Emma is the problem.""
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Nicole's face had lost all color.
Dad slowly lowered the phone.
"Why?""
It was the only word he could say.
Nicole shook her head.
"I was angry.""
"Angry enough to destroy your own daughter's tablet?""
"You don't understand.""
"No," Dad said.
"I don't.""
I stood against the counter, still holding my cheek.
Part of me wanted to feel relieved.
The truth was finally out.
But another part of me felt exhausted.
Because I had spent years trying to prove I wasn't the person Nicole wanted everyone to believe I was.
Nicole turned toward me.
"Emma, you know I didn't mean to hurt you.""
I stared at her.
"You hit me.""
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
Dad looked at her.
"You hit my daughter because you wanted her blamed for something you did?""
Nicole's eyes filled with tears.
But I noticed something.
She wasn't crying because she felt sorry.
She was crying because she had been caught.
"I made one mistake," she whispered.
Dad shook his head.
"No. You made a choice.""
Lily moved closer to me.
She gently touched my arm.
"I'm sorry, Emma.""
I looked down at her.
"You didn't do anything wrong.""
"But I should have told Dad sooner.""
Her voice trembled.
"I heard Mom talking about blaming you, and I thought maybe she would stop.""
I hugged her.
"You were scared.""
She nodded.
For the first time that day, I saw Nicole lose control.
She wasn't the powerful person in the room anymore.
She wasn't the victim.
She was just someone who had run out of lies.
But then Nicole did something none of us expected.
She walked toward the kitchen drawer.
Dad immediately stepped in front of me.
"What are you doing?""
She stopped.
Slowly, she smiled.
Not a kind smile.
A cold one.
"You all think this changes everything.""
Dad frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Nicole looked at me.
"You really think I am the reason your life has been so difficult?""
A chill ran through me.
"What are you talking about?""
She tilted her head.
"Ask your father why he never told you the truth about your mother.""
Dad froze.
The room went silent again.
My heart started pounding.
"What truth?""
Nicole looked at Marcus.
And for the first time, my father looked afraid.
"Emma," he said quietly.
"Don't listen to her.""
But Nicole smiled.
Because she knew she had found something.
May you like
Something even bigger than the broken tablet.
"Your father has been hiding something from you for years.""
